Many E-Bike owners don't factor in the cost of actually owning an E mountain bike and how much it will cost them to run each year. E-Bikes can cost a lot of money if you neglect them and need to replace a lot of parts at once, it's best to know roughly how much you should budget to avoid a big surprise when it comes to the first big service. How much money do you spend on EMTB upkeep each year? Do you have any tips to help make the components last even longer?

£3500 is absolutely nonsense. I’ve had my Focus Jam2 for over a year and do 150 - 200 km a week on it mostly on forest trails. I do all my own maintenance and apart from new handgrips and charging the battery I’ve spent nothing on it. Granted I’ve bought a lot of tools over the years as I have 4 other bikes but I’ve had no additional cost for the e-bike.

Way over exaggerated too. It'll never cost that much unless you're doing 20+ miles every day. Tyres and brake pads are the main consumable. Everything else generally lasts a good amount of time if it's looked after and not mistreated.

Im hoping he's including depreciation in there, in which case it may not be far off for a shop maintained, top end ebike. Maybe 2.5-3k more accurate? I was talking to a chap at Hamsterley 3 months ago who had just paid 600 quid for a service on his 8k bike. And dont forget the £3.20 for electricity 🤔 3.5k a year is ridiculous though, i used to race karts for a lot less than that.

suspension needs service, sure, but riding through mud when you can avoid it is plain stupid and costly. on the drivetrain side i have limited, yet very promising data: I'm rotating 3 chains (for the sake of convenience), all immersion waxed every 100-150km. Chain wear over the last 2000km is inexistant and chainrings, even 7075 alloy versions seem to last pretty long. Previously, the dirty oil film on and under the chain rollerd would eat the alloy chainring like a piece of cake, and the chain was ready for replacement (0.5% stretch) after 800km... some say a waxed chain can be good for 5000-15000 km. we'll see, but the cassette and chainring wear is very visibly absent. I'm using cheap metallic or ceramic pads from ali, cost around 5€ a pair and have incredible breaaking power. far from 20-30£...same goes for discs

BIG thumbs down. Man, I absolutely beat my Ebike to death on trails and such, averaging 300ish KM a week in very very hard riding conditions and I don’t spend anywhere even close to what you’re spending. Aside from chain/sprocket lube and the occasional tire/brake pad I haven’t done ANY maintenance to my bikes and they ride like the day I got them. What are you doing to your bikes? Shifting while under full electric throttle every single time you shift? Don’t know how the heck you’re wearing out your cassettes and chains that fast! I’m also running Bafang Ultra motors, which output way more torque than your reference motors and I still don’t have anywhere near the maintenance you guys are claiming. What FUD!

Depreciation is the big cost long term. An 8k ebike will be worthless in 8 years. Theres a minimum of 80 quid a month. Most will turn them over faster and lose a lot more every year. So probably 125 quid a month for most. Mentioning electricity was silly, its almost free compared to all the other costs. Over the life of an 8k bike over 25k miles it will be maybe 100 quid? Good video!

If I tell one of my friends that not only do they have a $3k initial investment, but a roughly $1700 dollar yearly upkeep when they're only bringing home $40k with a family they'll say "no, thanks". I wouldn't blame them either. The way this video was geared entirely toward the upper class saddens me. There's a lot of people out there that love this sport just as much as their financial betters. They shouldn't feel alienated over their income. I'm not going to unsubscribe, but I'm very disappointed. Still love you guys though, keep up the good work (BESIDES this video). This is madness! I have ridden 2,500 miles in my Turbo Levo I would say two chains, annual Lube/clean inspect. This year I splurged on a new wide range 12 speed cassette with SRAM AXS shifter. For three years I would say including yearly tires, and the purely discretionary shifter purchase, $1,600. Nowhere close to your estimate. You really need to make clear on mileage and use. If I put 2500 miles a year on it, I would guess $400-500 max. But could get by with less. Depreciation is a given, almost doesn’t count. ALL bikes depreciate! And I would argue e-bikes less so because used bikes are in demand. Really, I think no different than a regular bike of same use case. Eventually the motor may go, which is a good reason to stick with well known brands, Bosch, Brose, Shimano, and maybe Yamaha. The off brand hub motors and other Chinese knock offs are riskier. Especially batteries.

My bike, Giant E Reign, I ride the mountains of Lake Tahoe and love enduro style riding. I've got a little over 100 hrs of riding and so far outside of 2 broken derailleurs I've replaced 1 chain, and all maintenance and minor adjustments were under bike shop warranty. I'm just now doing my 1st front and rear shock service &200 and my brakes will need to be serviced soon but that's it. I really take care of my bike though, I clean, lube chain and shocks, check tire pressure and do a thorough look over after every ride. My mechanic is impressed as most of his work is on bikes that don't get the lovin I give mine. It's just money but I use it wisely and would rather by extras than spend it on stuff I can avoid. Be smart and take care of your gear.

Transmission costs depends on what you're doing... I replaced cassette and chain after 1500km on my trek rail, stock cassette was a slx with 51 cog in aluminum, that has been the "weak point" that forced me to replace it.. 😬 doing lots of technical climbing made me using often short gears and cassette wear out fast on 51.. anyway I replaced it with a deore 12 speed which is made all of steel and will last at least twice, weights more but I don't care about that.. so I suggest to do the same to keep you transmission as long as possible, aluminum shouldn't be used on ebike transmission at all but if you want to save weight you have to be prepared to spend lots of money on maintenance 😬

Brake pad wear is crazy on e-bikes. Rear tire wear and other tire failures are much higher on e-bikes. It is better on lighter bikes, but my first Haibike literally made the brake pad disappear on the first 2 weekends (bike park weekends with multi-battery days) ... If you lube/clean, your chain and cassette can last, but it is certainly not "normal bike" wear. I messed up more front tires on e-bikes than on normal bikes. Cush-core is a must if you are plowing through rocks.

I've been ebiking since 2018 and do about 2000 miles a year. I do around 500 miles per chain and 1500 miles per cassette and chainring. My insurance gives me full cover even when I'm out and about and costs me around £40 on my house insurance. I do my own maintenance so I've had to buy a stand, pit pump, now changed to an electric compressor and the specialist tools. I've spent quite a bit on tyres and now run different ones in winter and summer. I've just bought some Continental Urban 29 x 2.5, £26 which are fine for trails and dryer conditions and save my Maxxis DH for winter as they wear very quickly. Tyre sealant, valves, cleaning materials, chain lube, don't add up to that much, Aldi have some great offers on Muc off. Battery degradation!! Maybe a new battery at £700 in 3 years time, or a new bike. I think I'm spending around £1000 per year.

It seems that for average riders that do not bike for a living, when you add all the costs and labor you are better off buying a cheaper e-bike and replacing it every 2-3 years when worn or broken. This way you get new technology every couple of years while possibly getting some of the cost back when selling the old bike.

I’m not sure of the cost in the UK as I live in Australia but as my current bike is my first EBike I am absolutely astonished at the rate I am using consumable parts. Where I ride and the amount I ride I only get 400km out of a set of rear brake pads 500km out of a chain I could squeeze another 100km out of the chain but to preserve the cassette and chainring I do it at 500 km. 2000km out the cassette and 2500km out of the jockey wheels on the deraileur. ( bearings shat themselves). I have 2800km on it atm. Bike gets washed and lubed after EVERY ride.

When if comes to the weight you needent worry about the weight of the gear cluster, cahin and chainring. if all you're adding is an extra 250g over and above the lighter and more expensive components it all becomes meaningless your adding less than 1.1% of the weight of your eMTB based on a 23kg bike. You would be better off going for a dump and pee before a ride. On my Trek/Boch setup I'm running 11 speed with a 10speed chain and it works perfectly. I haven't needed to change the gear cluster in 2 years but when I do I'll change to 10 speed cluster with a good spread of ratios and set the derailleur end limit screw to prevent the 11th position and probably drop to a 9 speed chain. The key to making the drive trail lasting is don't ride mud or wet sand, completely flush the chain every ride and completely soak and clean the chain in a solvent to remove all micro particles od grit and metal particles. If all your doing is re-lubing your chain then all you are doing in creating a grinding paste inside your chain and hot wax dip every 4-6 weeks as needed. This ensures it penetrates and remains inside all the voids inside the chain and won't drip out or attrack and hold grit. A power washer is a very bad idea if you intend to keep the bike for several years as it is asking to force water into electrical connections. motor and bearings. Bearings don't use the light weight grease. Use a lithium marine grease to pack all bearings. If you need to replace a bearing take to rubber seals off flush in clean petrol and re pack to 80% capacity with marine grease.

If you use gucky oils like dry lube or wet lube you need to change the cassette and chain once or twice a year. You will save a lot of money if you run a new cassette with 3 chains and USE CHAIN WAX like squirt lube for example. Start with the first chain, clean away the factory goo carefully and then lube it with liquid wax. Change to the second chain when the first chain has stretched to 0.5. Then repeat with the third chain until it stretched to 0.5. Then put on the no 1 chain until it stretched to 0.75 and repeat this with chain 2 and chain 3. THEN replace the the cassette an buy 3 new chains, repeat as above. This saves you a lot of money! 😃

1500GBP is probably more than 50% of the eMBs on the market. One thing I'd like to note - You talk about replacing the cassette twice a year, but the chain once possibly twice - My understanding is that chain stretch nukes other parts of the drivetrain, and needs to be kept a close eye on, yet you are talking about replacing what is in effect a consumable item (chain) once, and a non-consumable (cassette) twice in the same time period

I had a 2019 kenevo expert. Bought on credit. Had to sell it to pay bills , and the cost to maintaine it was just to big. Had to sell it cheap because the battery had issues and there where lots of parts that needed to be changed. Even the winter tires was more expensive pr wheel to buy than winter tires for my gf’s car. And the car tires where with installment included. Now I’m bikeless and still in debt from the credit I took to buy my dreambike. Now I just spent my freetime watching Emtb videos on youtube. Dreaming of my next bad financial decision.

I rebuilt his Bosch motor all 10 bearings ,one rear wheel bearing a rear cassette and serviced his front forks . All motor bearings 173 pounds including upgrading with mudstop and seals forks a bit of work cassette 67 pounds and a rear wheel bearing 12 pounds oops forgot new chain 32.00 . My own bike is a haibike allmtn 6.0 2017 . I have done 3800 miles since buying new in 2018 and have changed 3 rear wheel bearings 2 front wheel bearings 2 jockey wheel bearings ,2 cassettes and 2 front chain rings ,headstock bearings and serviced the forks . I would be gutted if I had spent 3500 grand in maintenance it doesn't cost me that to maintain both of my motorbikes and my car lmao 😆

Rohloff May be fine for a bit of cross country, but I wouldn’t take it to a bike park. I have a cross country touring bike with mountain bike tyres, front air forks and Rohloff gears and the feel of the belt drive and gears on single track wouldn’t be up to it. It’s a great system but not suited to the rough and tumble of mtb’ing. I get what you’re saying as they’re so maintenance free, but I would never put it on a mtb.

I commute on my canyon E ON every day for a year 18 miles every day and only thing i had to change was casete and chain (150£totall).Yes its not muddy conditions and all but i put more then 6k miles a year with five bike washes and maby 3 chain lubing sesions because I'm lazy. I dont think you would need a new drive train for an E bike for next two years BECAUSE NO ONE RIDES A BIKE ON A TRAIL EVERY DAY!!!ALSO WHY WOULD YOU INSURE YOUR BIKE IF YOU ONLY USE IT 1- 2 TIMES A WEEK ON A TRAIL. IF YOU SPEND 3K AND OVER ON A BIKE ITS JUST COMMON SENSE NOT TO LEAVE IT IN UNACCEPTABLE PLACE.

Video should be called: How much the industry wants you to spend on your bike per year! Get real people, I did close to 2000km since last october and still on the same cassette and chainring (and I am using cheap chinese 104BCD aluminum narrow wide one) and my cassette looks like new. The "bike specific" cleaning products are a big money sink as well that you don't need. Isopropyl alcohol and shampoo ring a bell? And my 120ml bottle of chain lube for 10€ will last you whole season even more. And how about tires, i'm sick and tired of almost all youtube channels pushing all the time high end products only. There are perfectly good tires for less than 30€.

I expect a new chainring next cassette. 3 sets of pads so far (total 5000km so far) 2 tyres. Rest of bike (Focus Jam2) still rolling well out here in Noozieland, ride a lot of slow tech + t new rocky-base tracks they seem to be continuously building out here.
