The work begins and we are pleasantly surprised when our septic contractor informs us that he can complete our job ahead of schedule. I mean, when does that ever happen? As owner/builders in the state of Virginia, we are required to use a licensed septic installer, but this should be the only thing with the entire house build that we need to contract out. The rest is on us. We learned a lot watching Marvin in his backhoe and had fun getting dirty with him. This episode shows installation of two thousand-gallon precast septic tanks. The second tank contains a pump which gets powered when the water level reaches about 500 gallons. There is also a high-water alarm on the second tank in case the pump fails. Our leach field is 320 feet away with a 50 foot climb in elevation. It was engineered to be 5 channels, using infiltrator chambers, at 100 feet long each on the 23 degree grade.

Considering the graves age , the house was probably built before there was septic rules and the tank was probably a redwood lined pit with no field lines. Era 1900’s style

It is an awesome feeling to have a main "infrastructure" component complete!!!!! It's confirmation that hopes and dreams can work and that the light at the end of tunnel is NOT a train coming at you!!!! I know this is a couple years ago.. but still CONGRATULATIONS!!!! We just got our septic tank in last month and it was the last main infrastructure on our place. Completely different design, but same concept.

So cool you checked a big thing off your list! I've had my septic alarm go off before. Your backup tank will be great!

I had one tree next to my filter bed and the tree roots plugged up the distribution pipes and backed everything up into the distribution box. the concrete box froze and broke. I replaced the box with a plastic one and a couple years later the county health dept condemned the septic system and made me hook up to the city sewer. I hope all them trees by you filter bed don't do that to you too 10-15 years down the road. GREAT CONTENT!

Was there a reason you had to have a pump in the system? I'm in North Carolina and the only reason a pump would be required here is if the system had to go up hill.

Yes, that's exactly why. The other reason is because it deposits a certain amount of effluents into the leach field all at once, saturating the entire field, resulting in more even distribution and a healthier field.

Haha! Yes, Barry. I'm glad you stopped by that day to solve the mystery for us. Would have driven me nuts, had you not. There's a nice spot on the upper ridge where there's a substantial drop-off with a killer view. That's where we'll be swinging when the house gets built.

You could save money by flowing house waste to the field tank and not go to this pumped tank for the trailer
