E46 Oil Cooler Install Part 1/3 - S54 Oil Filter Housing Install

In this video we go over swapping the Oil filter housing to the S54 M style housing, installing the Rally Road oil distribution block and the beginnings of installing the AEM Oil Temp Gauge. Thanks for posting this set of videos. Really help break it down for someone who is learning how to do an oil cooler for the first time.

2:26 isnt this normally the oil check valve?

It's an oil Diverter Valve or Thermostat. They are pretty restrictive and for the purpose of running a cooler, we want it to flow freely. You can read more about it here: store.vacmotorsports.com/mobile/vac-motorsports-oil-diverter-valve-bmw-s50b32s54-p4056.aspx

@@AlanFixedIt i just know its purpose is to keep the oil from the top of the engine to flow back to the oil pan, after shutting off the car. at least on the m54 one

@@Yumuura-ze5qp Ah I understand your question now. The S54 housing has an anti drain back valve AND a thermostat. The anti drain back valve can be seen by looking inside where the filter sits.

why would you do this whole conversion? The m54 cooling system is good enough also its not a turbo car so it wont breakdown the oil viscosity.and looking at your old housing its very dirty cleaning it alone will improve the oil temperature

For the capability to add an external cooler for faster cool downs on track days.

You are wrong my friend. Take your n/a e46 to the track and watch your oil temps hit 250°f.
