Awesome job! Great crew communication and interaction. I applaud your planning and decision making as well. I worked Oshkosh ATC for 21 years...through 2012 responsible for the 1/2 mile In'Trail procedure and supervised the operations at Fisk for the last 10 years of my tenure in support of AirVenture. Oh... and nice landing too!

To everyone who says that flying the RIPON/FISK VFR arrival to Airventure is dangerous and that they'd never do it: you really need to try before you pass judgement. It seems absolutely nuts in this video, and it can be high stress, but that's why you prep, have everything positioned before you get to RIPON, and do it with multiple sets of eyes in the cockpit. If you don't feel comfortable doing it as PIC, fly it with a friend who's done it before. You'll get the experience and you'll get to say that you FLEW to the world's greatest aviation celebration! Oh, and the landing at KOSH, just like this video shows, is entirely optional. If the weather's no good, or there's too much traffic, there are a lot of airports around to wait for things to calm down.

guys like the dude in the right seat are kinda annoying. yeah, if you see something out of place please tell me. but im not going to want constant instruction nor would i ever want to see your hands on the yoke when i am flying the plane. especially during landing.

Who was the PIC? Was he under instruction? Otherwise I'm with Jeff, he needs to keep his hands in his pockets if he can't control the urge to touch the controls.

When my father and I flew in 2012, we took off early from Hartford, just after all the J-3s in our Super Cub. The key to avoid mass traffic is get there early!

Great communication and interaction in the cockpit. Just one side note: to the guy on the right, unless you are the PIC's CFI, you have absolutely NO business touching the yoke on flare. Not a good move. Great job though gentleman!

Definitely agree, impressive work on their end. That young gentleman on the right needs to know though how dangerous and unprofessional that move was. If you are flying with the right pilot, you will find yourself with a punch to the jugular LOL

Something I tell all pilots flying into EAA OSH, count on one, two or all three of these things happening: Someone cuts the corner at RIPON from usually the south, but sometimes the north, as if they had no idea RIPON exists. Someone will fly over the top of you going way too fast (and I don't mean the higher altitude for turbines and warbirds.) Someone will fly WAY too slow in front of you and really screw you up, and those behind you. This year only #3 happened -- a low wing, HP bird flying 70 knots from RIPON to FISKE and beyond, and 300 feet higher that prescribed. I finally broke radio silence at yelled, "NINETY KNOTS - NINETY KNOTS!" The controller picked up on that right away and advised all in the 1800' line to fly 90 kts. I had to put out flaps and finally gear to keep from running over him and no one was in front of him. I swear. I really wish there was a way to deny landing to people who blatantly blow the NOTAM. It is just dangerous. Fortunate that I have always had someone with me to spot ... would not want to do it alone during busy times.

You made my argument - see other comments.
@ARedCatJoe
@ARedCatJoe 10 жыл бұрын
If by "...a low wing, HP bird..." you mean a high performance aircraft very capable of maintaining 90kts, I apologize completely, but the NOTAM does say that if you can't maintain 90kts, you should maintain max cruise. It also says that if you cannot maintain 1/2 mile spacing, you should break off and return to RIPON. The thing that really gets me is when some guy calls RIPON approach 40 miles out for sequencing. Seriously? Read the NOTAM.
@truenorth636
@truenorth636 10 жыл бұрын
ARedCatJoe True about 1/2 mile spacing ... but when you know people cheat and merge in from the sides past Ripon, Dealing with 1/4 mile spacing can feel safer than breaking off and going back to RIPON.
@ARedCatJoe
@ARedCatJoe 10 жыл бұрын
Scott Sedam I agree, but it shouldn't be necessary! Flying into Airventure is completely safe, except if you don't read/abide by the NOTAM. The arrival is so unlike anything else that the prior knowledge is not optional.
@RustyDiver
@RustyDiver 9 жыл бұрын
Scott Sedam Not all aircraft in the arrival can do 90 knots. That is the max speed for the arrival...deal with it. If your a/c can do the higher approach speed, take the other approach, otherwise expect that you might end up behind a J3 or something similar someday. Flew in there three times with my father-in-law in his Long EZ, had to be sent around a Taylorcraft once, no biggie. Unless there is a dangerous situation, you should stay off the radio...the controllers do a good job, you stick to yours and follow the NOTAM. :)

@Windtee 10 жыл бұрын
Good flying! It's not a big deal. I flew FISK twice, once in a slow airplane... the other in a fast airplane. Just study the NOTAM and stick with it. #Aviation #OSH

V Late to comment. Just saw. If you check other flight videos by Bugsmasher (left seat) you will find that he was on his learner's permit long cross country trip in April of 2014. I assume he had passed his check ride between then and this video in July 1014. It seems obvious that the right seat occupant is his instructor, if he had not passed his check ride, the trip was questionably legal since there were passengers. You can argue the wisdom of his participating (as an instructor with passengers) in the high demand/stress trip to OSH for AirVenture with his apparent low time certificated student, but his instructional comments and "yoke involvement" are appropriate, and important, to everyone in the a/c (including the diversion to Appleton) as his instructor (if he was). The left seat guy was not yet up to the job as PIC for this trip. Not sure I would have been at that point in my experience. I am sure he is now. I have flown via Fisk into OSH in 1998. It is a tense, head-swiveling flight. I also flew from Greenville, MS to Bay City MI , then Caldwell NJ, and back to Greenville between Christmas and New Year in December 1976, a month after passing my check ride (no instructor on board). We learn from our brushes with questionable judgement. Hopefully... In life: first the test... then the lesson.

One note I would share..your heads are on a swivel, but you need to move your heads up and down every min or so, the reason, aircraft heading right towards you appear to stick in the windshields, and unless you bob your head like that, it's hard to see them in close traffic like this.

That sounds like total insanity, both are checking across each other instead of out of their own window only. A wonder they didn't have head injuries from each other. I would have to be flying alone after that guy in the right seat kept screwing with things.

Also, the runway is marked 30, but looking on Google and OSH - FAA airport diagrams there is no runway 30, only runway 31.

In this video we flew part of the Fisk Arrival but had to break off the arrival and divert to Appleton (ATW) because of the rainstorm over FISK. So you see us landing on Appleton's runway 30, not at Oshkosh, hence the wrong runway numbers.

Terrible cockpit dynamic. Let the PIC flY and make the decisions. Right seat is making the radio calls so his hand can be on the yoke. But the PIC should be saying when to make the calls.

How come that the ATC gives you clearance to land on runway 30 but there is no runway 30. only runway 31? Why is this the case? For another guy ATC gives clearance to land on runway 21, but there is only a runway 22. Has all the co-ordinates changed?

Two guys holding the yoke at the same time scares me. The one to the left seemed to be the pilot flying, while the guy to the right kept grabbing the yoke. Bad airmanship! Keep the sticky fingers away and let the pilot flying do his job, unless you call out "my airplane". Which there were no reason for in this approach.

Was the dude in the right seat an instructor? Even if he is, his hands don't belong on the controls at all unless asked to take control or sees fit to take over. Appears to be a wannabe if you ask me...

Dude in the right seat needs to learn how to NOT keep putting his hands on the controls when he is NOT the one flying. Plus, it seemed like he was getting annoyed when ATC wasnt answering him right away. Trust me when I say she heard your call but she had something more important to say then give you a landing clearance still 5 miles out.

All I can think for the guy on the right's behavior is the left seat is a student, in which case he shouldn't be flying into OSH, or it's his first time in a Dakota, in which case he shouldn't be flying into OSH! If they put you on 27 you're turning base abeam the numbers in an already close-in pattern. Turning final at 300' AGL isn't the time I'd want to be learning for the first time how it handles at low speed. Bad decision either way. And if he's not a student, and it's not his first time in the plane, left seat has terrible assertiveness and right seat doesn't understand what PIC means.
