This tutorial is packed with ear training tips and exercises that any musician will find useful, but which I've specifically designed for pianists. One of the problems piano players have is that simply learning our instrument doesn't train our ear (as it does for many strings and winds) and so it's easy for us to neglect our aural skills. But ear training can make a massive difference to your musical ability: a good hear helps with sight-reading, improvising, songwriting, production, understanding of music theory and much, much more.

Thanks for the great ideas Bill 👍🎹🎶 I often go through all the major scales. as I’m walking for example I’ll do the 1564 of all the major scales. Starting simple really is the key. Pardon the pun. Bill, i could sit at the piano and play melodies. But i've found i can't think in my head whether the next note is up or down. Basically, my fingers will invariably find the right note but i couldnt tell you what the next note will be. How is that the case.?

It sounds like it's just the way you're wired, Stephen - I'm a bit the same! I know some people (my wife is a good example) for whom it's just *obvious* where a note is, and she frequently thinks it's hilarious that I make mistakes when I'm working things out by ear. I think singing aloud could be the way around it: if I'm picking out a tune I often have to sing notes aloud or everything goes foggy and I just have to guess (I actually do that at one point in this tutorial, when I'm jamming through Ten Green Bottles: that was a bit of a spontaneous thing, but I left it in because I thought it was quite a good example of how this kind of thing gets done on the fly).

What a great lesson, Bill! I've been subscribed to you since 2011 and even bought my first HD webcam to have a master class with you over Skype (it somehow didn't pan out, but still it was a right purchase). I've been playing the piano on and off, learning to play the piano is on my bucket list - I am almost done with another thing from it, which is getting my Japanese to a decent level, then I will certainly buy all of your newer products all start using your videos as tutorials!

Great to see you back with videos, Bill. I've got your books, and even though I'm not using them quite yet, I'm looking forward to cracking them open...virtually of course. For now I'm trying to develop my keyboard skills with the Rule of the Octave. I learned it with the LH playing the bass note and the RH doing the work. But I thought that was not good for the LH so I'm assuming the bass note and playing it out with both hands. I've learned that it's like a dance, but I'm having trouble with the second position, second inversion in Roman Numeral terms. So I'm just trying to get that better. I had timed myself going around the circle of fifths in each position, and I've gained in speed and accuracy. The next step will be to do it in minor scales. I'm also learning the ukulele, and just received a baritone ukulele so there are two fretboards to learn. But I'm also using the ROTO and trying each of the parts. I've gotten past the biggest stumbling block, and this video is the cherry on top. I'll start singing, and that's a big step for me. I was the kid that choir teachers told to move my lips and not make a sound. At university I tried to develop a stage voice since my opera singer friend wanted me to do more theater to go along with my juggling. The professor was trying to find my range and asked if it wasn't too late to be refunded for the course. It was, but she apologized. I've been to a juggling convention in York and I really enjoyed the sunny weather...inside. Merci for all you're doing, Cheers.
