Interleaved Practice: the King of Piano Learning Techniques?

Interleaved practice is an incredibly powerful piano practice technique that involves working on two contrasting styles of music side-by-side to improve one or both. In this tutorial we look at how to use baroque-style keyboard music to boost your jazz piano and pop piano skills.

Thank you! Id never heard this term before, despite having used it to a degree. The way you explain it is getting me actually excited to practice more and specifically to intro this technique. Also, KZfaq definitely needs to update their copyright policy specifically with regard to performance of public domain music. Too many videos get flagged needlessly as is. Hopefully they eventually address this. It would be a huge win for educational content.

Agreed - it's hugely frustrating. I get that having to check every video where it was in doubt would be hard work, but I equally find it hard to believe that my performance of a piece is ever going to be exactly, mathematically identical with another one. I suppose the algorithm needs a bit of latitude built in to prevent people from tweaking copyrighted tracks just slightly in order to use them, but it's the sort of thing that should be fixable if there's a will to do it. Ditto me with the term "interleaved practice" - apparently it's been a standard thing in educational psychology for years, but it never got through to me during any of my music education.

Try using MeWe instead of KZfaq. You can create a place in the 'Communities' and post up your piano pieces there instead. I'm a complete beginner on the piano keyboard and the sheet music is well beyond me. But hopefully watching your video will provide me with a 'link' between the piano keyboard and sheet music. I also have three guitars; trying to learn guitar as well. But as I've just got rid of my RSI, I can learn piano keyboard first, while my left arm recovers.

Thanks for the tip, Ian! Best of luck with the RSI: I had a terrible time with it about ten years ago, mostly because I was typing a lot and doing my piano practice in big chunks, rather than little and often. It's the sort of problem that's easy to develop but hard to get rid of. You *can* get rid of it, though - in my experience it just takes a lot of time and patience and willingness to experiment with different ways of doing things.

Can you recommend any pieces for interleaved practice for less experienced players?

I would say anything that offers a contrast to the material you're already working on. So, for example, if you're trying to improve your pop/jazz/blues playing, have a go at some scored, classical-type learners' pieces. Any of the "It's Easy To Play" books might help you there (especially the ones edited by Denes Agay), and if they're still out of reach for you, then some decent beginners pieces: if you dig around in the PDFs that accompany my beginners' course you'll find quiet a few - all the download links are at www.billspianopages.com/beginners - does that help?

If you are uploading your own version of public domain song, couldn't you just dispute the copyright claim? I had to do that to few christmas song remixes because of others arrangements. Got them cleared just fine. Just have to be 100% sure that you have rights to use it (public domain or agreed with the copyright holder).

Short answer is yes, you're absolutely right. Long answer is that there remains a risk that the entity making the claim could decide that I've lifted their audio (and then mimed against it, which would be pointless, but even so) and then issue a takedown notice... which would need even more contesting and might result in the loss of a video and the several days work it took to make. As such, I tend to be very, very, very, very cautious around the whole issue: even though I clearly have right on my side, it just has the potential to generate a lot of hassle, and as this is the way I earn a living, that's best avoided!
