These videos are very valuable. After your first video, I started to ear train as a part of my practice.

Thank you so much, that is one of the things that is slowing my progress, & my enjoyment of playing. I'm battling achieving the perfect note. Thank you for permission of simply doing my best, (I felt so inadequate), it's okay until I train my ear 🎻💜 Thank you

All we can do is our best. Ear training is something we work on always and we have to start somewhere. Don't let the complexity of violin playing get in the way of your enjoyment. Your ear will get better. It always does.

❤. I see professionals when they tune before concert starts they only use the end of the bow . Also, they dont have fine tuners. I wonder if fine tuners are easier or more precise to tune ?But again most professionals only use one or 2 fine tuners on the violin. And they seems to be happy with the g and d string even after the use of the fine tuners on their a /e..it happends to me sometimes that changing the e string somethings changes the d and g string again . And i need to adjust the g or d again.

That does happen. The strings are all connected to the tailpiece so changing one will change the other. Fine tuners are easyer to use. If I wasn't so used to tuning with pegs I'd use fine tuners for all strings. All time spent tuning is ear training. But we have to keep a balance.

In this video, when you play two strings together, and the tuning is correct or nearly correct, I can hear powerful overtones (like a low growl) as you play. If we can hear it on the video, that means that that feature is very powerful indeed under your own ear. How important is it for us while tuning to listen out for those overtones? Many thanks :-)

I am glad you can hear the overtones so well. Listening out for those is extremely important for ear training, intonation and sound.

Hello. Can I ask a few questions about 5:40 and after? --Your electronic tuner sounds like a piano key (I've never heard this before, I thought most only put out a continous tone). I mention this because, when you tuned the first 2 notes by ear, I could hear the notes blend perfectly. But then when you checked the "D" string against the tuner, it showed that you were "sharp". You adjusted the "D" to comply with the tuner, but when you checked the "A&D" strings (it seemed to me) the notes no longer blended as well. Same for the following strings. --I say this because it makes me suspicious of the electronic tuner. Is it programmed to recognize the frequencies in Equal Temperament? I was under the impression that one tunes a violin (from the initial "A" note given) according to Just Temperament and sometimes adjust finger placement to "equal" under certain playing conditions (which involve pianos and alot of music theory). What do you think? --Also, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!

Hallo! And thank you for this comment. You are spot on. The tuner devides the halftones into 12 equal halftones. I tune my fiths slightly smaller but not as small as the equal temperament. That is why it sounded in tune to you until my tuner told me to correct it. You have a very well trained ear! This is why I don't like making videos about intonation. I don't know how much of these tiny adjustments people can actually hear. I do not recommend a continuous pitch for tuning because we should train our pitch memory by remembering the pitch.

Hi, how about different frequency preference? my teacher teach me to use 442hz, but in some case I have to change to 440 hz in order to adjust with my ensemble member preference, what should I do? Should I adjust or just stay with my 442hz preference? cause its kinda hard to retrain to 440hz, very different sound for my ear.. do you have solution?

The solution is a bit tricky but I can tell you the fact that you have this problem is good news. It means you have very good pitch memory and therefore have a well trained ear. Do you have absolute pitch? The problem is that the better our pitch memory is, the less our ear will tolerate even only a 2 hz difference. This shows how finely trained your ear is. When confronted with a different pitch our ear needs about 15-20 minutes to adjust and accept the new pitch as correct. You might have already noticed that it is much easier to adjust to a higher pitch than it is to get used to a lower pitch. This is a phenomena which everybody has. Our ear just works like that. What helped me was to practice to a different pitch every day. 140, next day 144, next day 142, etc... Knowing I need about 20 minutes to adjust and practicing this adjustment every day helped a lot. Over time we get used to dealing with this challenge. I hope this helps you!
