OC - Jackson - 1008-1026 Larsen Rd. - Structure Fire - Two Alarms
Around 12:25 AM 3/29/22, Jackson Police got a report of a possible structure fire across from Station 55. That area is currently under construction and they are building 3 story multi-family dwellings. First due fire apparatus pulled up with limited access due to construction and heavy fire throughout a 3 story multi-family. Propane tanks in the front of the building are either on fire or about to explode according to 5500. Fully defensive fire attack on this building with 2 tower ladders in operation and 2 2.5 inches on the ground. After about 45 mins the main body of fire was knocked down. Crews operated for about 4-5 hours on this fire. The cause of the fire is unknown to me at this time, possible from the propane tanks.

@@franceinegelven677 Howdy, I grew up in the small town of Norwood Ohio. I spent a many an hour sitting at the main firehouse waiting for an alarm to drop. It only happened once and was extremely thrilling for a little boy. But if the fire trucks came down our street I was Johnny on the spot on my bicycle to follow them. The best part is it was excitement you didn’t have to pay to watch.

Wow, the thermal imagery really shows how much heat in inside the roof and walls, even where there isn't any fire or even smoke showing outside. I'm one of those who see what looks like a small smoke condition, and then when it erupts to the external flash, wonder why it was allowed to "grow" like that, but I guess it was already grown inside.

They were moving the straight stream around a lot but that put a massive amount of water on a very small area and the remaining flames created extension that kept that fire burning for a long time. The objective "Should be," to eliminate the flames as quickly and safely as possible while using the least amount of water. You have to Think about where every drop is going and what it is accomplishing, not just endlessly squirting on small areas.

The fire walls in this type of construction is quite often double 5/8 drywall which provides approximately a 2 hour fire rating. The downfall to that is that the fire can burn over and/or around the wall among other problems.
@JB91710
@JB91710 Жыл бұрын
A building of this type could very well have Shear walls at the ends of the center section which are covered completely with 5/8" Plywood and then covered with fire rated drywall. Even before the roof was completed, those shear walls would have been in place. Even if they were no shear walls, a fire wall would have continued up and over to the roof and wall sheathing to seal off the rest of the structure.

In NJ it depends upon the “use” of the building. Residential use, assembly use, commercial use, etc all have different requirements for the level of fire protection. It’s possible that since the building was still under construction there are sprinklers that just weren’t in service yet.

@poppiarlin5612

That will never happen. It would only drive the construction cost up and they’re too many lobbyist to prevent this from happening. In short that’s why they have insurance. There is no risk and occupancy loss so the structure can be replaced
@jmWhyMe

@@jeffd1467 if there is a will there is always a way. Until the insurance industry gets tired of underwriting vertical lumber yard construction fires things won't change. But if the insurance companies tell the developers that they must protect the sites during construction, you'll be amazed how quickly things will change. Even a couple contracted water tenders on scene over night would make a huge difference - they can use their deck guns to suppress fire as an initial attack until the first engines arrive. This would also greatly reduce spread of the fire...

One sign of an experienced pro is they don't say "fully involved" unless the structure is actually "fully involved". That one wasn't when you kept saying it. It was however "through the roof". No big deal, just something to think about to up your game and credibility.

This is the type of construction that is used in the majority of residential construction and has been since roughly the 80’s. Lightweight construction dominates the housing developments across the country. Even many of the commercial occupancies get built with lightweight materials. It’s cheap and it’s fast, allowing many units to be built and sold quickly. Unfortunately the laborers are not the most experienced in the construction trade and miss little details that create very big problems during a fire. The materials used, lack of adequate fire protection, and poor construction is what allows a fire to get this big in a short period of time.
