Early Spring Motorcycle Camping in Near-Freezing Temperatures: First Moto Camping Trip of the Year

We got out on our first motorcycle camping trip of the year in the very earliest days of spring. This was the first time ever motocamping for my buddy Ducfan on his Yamaha WR250R and while I've gone motorcycle camping before, this was the first time I've ever done so on my Honda Africa Twin. Come along as we ride our motorcycles onto public lands for some dispersed camping. Check out our motorcycle camping setup, firewood gathering and processing, motorcycle camping cooking brats over the campfire, hanging out and enjoying some delicious beverages and chilling by the camp fire. I also had a chance to capture some epic moto camping drone footage of our campsite and the surrounding forest.
Everything was super fun until it came time to go to bed. The near-freezing temperatures proved to be too much for our motocamping sleeping bags, and both of us spent most of the night freezing and uncomfortable. Lesson learned for the next trip: bring a warmer motorcycle camping sleeping bag. The next morning we had a small fire, made some coffee, and packed up our moto camping gear before heading home. Along the way I managed to drop my Honda Africa Twin in just about the stupidest way possible, so make sure you watch until the very end of this moto camping trip video!

The best bike is the bike that makes you want to go and ride, get out there and puts a smile on your face. So if that is a KTM then a KTM is the best bike for DuckFan. Variety is the spice of life!

I see some Maine winter campers that put one of those reflective safety blankets between the sleeping pad and sleeping bag so it reflects your body heat back at you. It seems to work for them.

And the Twin takes a nap! Now its out of the way, no damage to the bike or gear, and a buddy to help lift it! Other than the Twin going down and freezing nearly to death overnight it looked like a successful trip! These early spring trips can be such a crap shoot on weather conditions. Hard to judge just how cold its going to be. Nicely done! Enjoyed the video!

camp tip from a Canadian- when camping in the cold, at the end of the night, if your not too wasted to safely use a camp stove, boil up some water, put that water into a nalgene bottle or none insulated steel bottle and stuff that into the bottom of your sleeping bag..

A suggestion - for plates n platters, I carry plastic frisbees. Often, when you turn them belly to belly, one will fit inside of another one. Makes a convenient place to carry tortillas. After supper, you now have some fun toys to play with. (They also wash up easily after eating. 😏) Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

A suggestion- I buy roasted nuts etc in the square, clear plastic containers with a screw on cover. These make handy humidors for Mr Puff Puffs - add a small piece of dampened paper towel. I also slip in a 6oz or 8oz capacity flask of scotch. As W.C. Fields would say, “I always carry a little whiskey, in case of snake bite. . . . . I also carry - one small snake.” Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

My day forecast was spotty cold showers. Arrived cold and dry. Walked amid dense woodland to my dig site. A vertical stone hole where the task was haul of dirt and loose rock by 5 gallons buckets. Dig, climb, dig, etc. Exit had me on TW200 sweaty under rain gear. Long dark scary ride back to the coast. So cold I got under a hot shower fully dressed just for quicker warmth. Too cold for early spring tenting. It was a month before I saw my camp, dig, and tent.

One tip for the sleeping; put your pad in the sleeping bag, and the sleeping bag+mat combo inside a bivvi bag. That way you're warm, won't roll off of your mat + waterproof should water leak in in the event of whatever. Otherwise solid video man! Love them! And was seriously looking into buying a tent but two person tents I feel take up so much room + what I see of the Ionosphere there's plenty of room to keep a drybag with clothing and my gear dry as well.

Thanks for another fun video. I like the idea of camping, but don’t like to actually camp, so it’s nice to watch you do it. And KTM vs AT? No contest: AT all day long. (My R 1200 GS is nice on smooth fire roads or gravel, but on gnarly trails it’s way too much bike (especially with 200 lbs of me on it)).

Shot gun creek area is a great place to ride and get away, and it's nice that it's close to were i live. As far as a adventure bike for your buddy? KTM makes a great adventure bike, although they are a little high maintenance. I have a 2017 Africa Twin and it's the best bike I have ever owned! So with that said the Africa Twin would be a great bike to consider. The Yamaha T 700 would be another good choice. I also considered a Triumph Tiger 800 before I bought my AT. I would pick the top 3 or 4 bikes he is most interested in and do a bunch of research and test ride each one. My choice of bikes is just my opinion. I know what works for me and The AT. has been great on road and off, and has been very reliable. I have been on most of the OBRDR'S and the AT. handled it all with the exception of deep sand and silt, and no one's bike handled that stuff very well on that trip.

Good honest content, but I lost you after 7 Mile Lane outside of Lebanon. Presumably from there you went eastward into the Cascade Mts. where you camped. For those of us that like to follow along on Google Maps it would be great if you could allow an occasional road sign to slip in or anything to provide a little clue about your location or where you are going. Rest assured there are viewers who would appreciate that little extra bit. Liked and Subscribed ... here's hoping.

The Africa Twin is clearly an excellent motorcycle, and the big KTMs and Multistradas have been known to occasionally get their rider to their destination AND back, but I think we left out the BEST bike of them all......... A stretched Turbo 'Busa with knobby tires.

You try editing together a coherent video when your friend is always in the middle of some random-ass unrelated story every time you turn the camera on.
