Fall Moto Camping Trip With Friends on My 2022 Kawasaki KLR 650 Adventure

It is fall and the weather is getting colder and wetter, but that didn't stop my friends and I from getting out on a fall moto camping trip near Detroit, Oregon. In this motorcycle camping adventure, three friends and I ride up Santiam Canyon through the areas destroyed by wildfire last year, stop for lunch in Detroit, Oregon and check out the incredibly low water level of the lake, and then head out around Detroit Lake to a top secret dispersed camping spot on the south side of the lake. A very enjoyable motocamping evening was had by all, including firewood gathering, camp setup, cooking brats on sticks over the fire, and the consumption of many beverages around the campfire. Motorcycle camping on my 2022 Kawasaki KLR 650 Adventure is always fun, but its even more fun with friends like Nathan (on his KTM 500 EX-C), Ryan (on his Honda Africa Twin) and Travis (also on a Honda Africa Twin). Cold weather motorcycle camping can still be enjoyable, and this fall motocamping trip is a perfect example of what I mean.

When my wife and I moved to Oregon in the camper for the summer, we largely stayed around Mckenzie Bridge area. That whole area was burned up damn near all the way as well. Everyone either living in a brand new just built house, or still waiting their turn living in a camper. Once in a while we would get a good day of just smoke pouring off the mountains, but usually it was alright. I don't think we had a single day of rain our 2 months there. It was truly incredible to see, wildfires just don't happen like this on the east coast. The wife was working in Springfield, so every time we could, we stopped at this roadside barbecue on the outskirts of Springfield. The name evades me, but it was the Cowan family. Hands down, best pulled pork I've had in my life. Unfortunately, we came during wildfire season, so no campfires for us.

i never judge anothers preference in beverages.i cannot drink any coors products because of instant headache.actually most all domestic beers give me instant headache,but i have found that many micro brews do not.dont know how much of that is related to my diabetes,but also limit my consumption for the same reason.enjoy your shows.dont currently do adventure biking but that may change.

My son and I drove through the area, I have a brother in Terrebonne, Oregon. Detroit Lake is beautiful. Make sure you stop at the bakery in Sisters.

Great fun....little bush craft tip on your fire wood processing...we have wet conditions here as well....if you baton that wood before you put it on the fire it will dry out in no time flat. You boys look like you need nothing more than Coors light.

Wow! I have a very similar sleeping mattress and bag set up except I slide off the dang mattress. I have got to figure out how not to slide and I really like how your bag works around your mattress. I also recently purchased a 2022 KLR650 and have almost 600 miles on it so still going through the break in routine but have done some off roading and was very pleasantly surprised how capable the bike is even with the stock tires which I think work very well over all. I appreciate your Vids. Keep it up good job. Incidentally, Hilarious VLOG

The OR wild fires were no joke. I took a putt out to Blue river earlier this year since the fires and man I knew it was bad, but seeing first hand really nailed it home. I was about 45ish miles from that fire and it was still tooo close.

In 1805 my city of Detroit Michigan was destroyed by fire. Bucket brigades didn't do the job very well that day.... and the population of Detroit at that time was under 700 people. The city was totally gone. 😁

Take your sleep system to the next level. Helinox cot max. You might have to set it up right side up inside the tent (a little tricky) but you hook the corners of your big agnes sleeping bag over the cot. Also, only inflate the air mattress to 60%.

If you got a small axe with you, splitting those in half will help the drying quite a bit.

One thing that helps me with getting wet wood going is splitting it sometimes it’s dry in the middle of it hasn’t been to rainy.

I just bought the klr adventure a month ago and I'm really liking it. Ive been a cyclist for a long time and I use slime in my tires to prevent flats. What's your opinion on sliming motorcycle tires. I'm not seeing anyone on KZfaq doing that

I have a 20 GSA 1250 and looking to buy a second bike for dirt roads, I know the GSa will do it but I am looking for something simple and will ride mostly gravel roads but some trails as well. I am trying to decide between the KLR and a DRZ. I am 6ft 4in and about 260 lbs. Wuld appreciate your thoughts given you have both.

@@DorkintheRoad neither can I actually, there are ways to sleep on your side… you hang the hammock tight, and sleep diagonally. It might be worth trying, if you could borrow one. Don’t bother with the skinny hammocks, try to find something ENO doublenest or equal sized. They take up almost no room, and are very fast to set up. In the summer it’s much cooler than sleeping on the ground, you don’t need a flat spot. My wife, my son, and I have camped on the side of a hill a couple times. If you could figure a way to try it for free, it’s totally worth trying.
