So, how can you prevent early morning waking in your 3 year old?
You’re dead asleep and then you hear it - your bedroom door creaks open and you hear tiny footsteps coming straight for you. You open one eye and see that it’s 5:15am. Ugh. Why does this keep happening!!!
Do you just have an early riser? Are you destined to wake up at 5am for the rest of your life?
I can confidently tell you NO! Waking at 5am is not cool for anyone - kids or adults. And there are things you can do to fix it.
Kids should be able to naturally sleep until at least 6am in the morning. I know 6am may sound early to some but it’s biologically what our kids are set up to do. But for those of you with early risers who keep seeing the 5 o’clock hour every morning, sleeping until 6 might sound like a dream

Thankfully my son sleeps past that 6 am and is usually closer to 7. How do i know if my son needs 10 hrs vs up to 12 hour. He currently naps for about 1 hour and is usually sleeping around 10 hrs at night (almost 4)

Usually 3 year olds need closer to 11 hours overnight but your son's sleep may be fine. You will be able to tell if he needs more by his demeanor - if he seems tired, fussy, clingy - move bedtime earlier. Also, if it's taking him 20+ minutes to fall asleep after lights out, that's a sign that he needs an earlier bedtime.

This makes sense! My almost 3 year old refused to nap for about 2 months at the end of the summer, but then started sleeping in every morning. But he still clearly needed a nap during the day but would refuse. He recently started napping again and now we are stuck with him waking around 5-5:45 every morning instead of 7. He goes to bed at 7:30 every night and always sleeps completely through the night. I wonder if I should try to shorten his daytime nap and put him to bed slightly earlier. I had 3 days last week where he didn't take a nap, so I'm thinking that he trying to drop his nap again.
