What is the deal with 2am wake ups? Night Wakings are tough. When your 3 year old wakes up at night, it’s time to get some sleep training help.
Proven Method to Get Your Child to Fall Asleep Alone: AwesomeLittleSleepers.com/yt_m...
Let’s set the scene: Your kid is sound asleep in their cozy room, with all the loveys, a nightlight, and the white noise machine. All the sleep tools.
😕 So, why the heck do they keep waking up in the middle of the night???
This is one of the most frustrating sleep problems. Because you’re dead asleep, too, and all you want is for this to NOT be happening, for your child to sleep through the night.
Let’s look at exactly why it IS happening. Why is your kid waking up at night?
There are typically 3 main causes of frequent night waking… and the last one is probably the culprit at your house.

Hi Jessica! My 2 year old daughter wakes up in the middle of the night and stays awake for hours in her cot. She falls asleep alone (even if it takes her more than a hour, we put her down around 7pm following your suggestions). She doesn't call for us just stays awake still in her cot, chatting a little. After let's say one hour we go and tell her to sleep and maybe she does or not. In the morning she's super tired and we have to wake her up.

When kids fall asleep independently yet spend hours overnight awake with minimal parental interaction, it may be a good idea to talk to your pediatrician. There could be something medical going on instead of something behavioral - which is what my tips help with. There could be enlarged adenoids or even a vitamin deficiency at play.

Does she nap? We cut naps completely for this very reason and it was a game changer!

My wife and I recently returned from a trip alone and my 4 year old sleep has gone downhill while we were away and since we have returned. Unfortunately, he was still in a crib and we had to transition him when we got back because he was throwing tantrums and jumping out. We have had some recent success with getting him to lay down at bedtime without throwing a tantrum or leaving the room, but the issue is still the night wakings. I believe it's driven mostly by separation anxiety from our trip and the transition. Sometimes we can take him back to bed and he will lay down. Other times, he will throw massive tantrums if we leave the room and begin grabbing and throwing things in his room. I have recently tried reassuring him briefly and giving him a hug and kiss and he stays in bed. I had heard you shouldn't really say anything to the child in the middle of the night. What can we do to limit or eliminate night wakings?

Hi Jessica! Any advice for my 3 year old who falls asleep independently but wakes up anywhere between 12-5am (sometimes multiple times) asking to go potty or change her diaper because she’s not comfortable being wet? I take her to the bathroom, potty, change diaper and put her back to bed and leave. But I wish she could sleep through the night without calling for me.

You could try reducing liquid for 2 hours before bed. Is she potty trained during the day? If so, and the night wake ups have been going on for a while, it makes me wonder what came first - the wake up or the need to pee. Meaning, is she waking up due to the sensation of having to pee or has she just gotten used to waking up overnight and now, when she does, she realizes shes wet/needs to go. The former means she may be ready to be diaper free overnight and the later means that she may be struggling to STTN without seeing you. Check out my video on nighttime potty training for more.

Hi Jessica. Exhausted parents here out of options. Our 3.5 year old son used to sleep through the night up until November 7th of this year. From that day until today January 23rd, he gets up multiple times a night restless and cries / screams until we come into his room and do most of the night-time routine all over to get him back to sleep. That includes rocking in the chair and singing a song he likes to sing before sleeping, then getting a drink of water and going back to sleep. He is in a crib still and shows no interest in climbing out of it. This has gone on for close to 3 months now and we are out of answers. My wife is also 7 months pregnant and needs the sleep at night. We can't keep doing this any longer. By the way, neither of us are comfortable with the crying it out method. He's been checked several times at his pediatrician with a clean bill of health. We genuinely have no clue what started waking him. He is on a very clean diet, gets plenty of food and play time during the day and takes naps. We follow nap times that allow for enough wake time in between and we've tried skipping naps and it doesn't make a difference. Any tips?

how do i train my 2 year old to sleep alone? we slept train her a while back but she kept on crying and didnt work. So, we made the mistake to sit in her room until she falls asleep. now if we are not there, she will cry until she looses her voice and has anxiety next day and wont let me out of her sight or put her down.

What if none of these are the reason? My 4 year old is waking ~2am wanting to play. She understands the ok to wake clock, and ignores it at this particular time. She wakes up her 2 year old brother and then they're up for 2-3 hours, also keeping us up while we are popping in to remind them to get back in bed.

Does she fall asleep independently at bedtime without anyone in the room with the door closed? If so, then look at what's happening at 2am and see how you can make it less exciting. Can you prohibit her from waking her brother? Can you remove toys from her room? Take out the light bulbs so she knows it's night time. Also, it sounds like there may be interaction with you telling her repeatedly to go to bed. If she is able to get your attention, that may be keeping her up as well.

@@toddlersleeptraining Thank you for your suggestions. My 2.5 year old has been waking up at night for the past month. She always wakes between 1am-3am. She falls asleep independently at bedtime in her crib without us being in the room. Her door is closed. But then she'll wake up around the same time every night. I'm wondering if we are going in her room too much, although we do minimal interventions. (She calls for us) and maintaining the behavior. We tried the Ferber method for 2 weeks but it didn't work. What are your thoughts on extinction method at this age? She used to sleep very well, 12 hours a night between the ages of 3 months and now. She has a 1,5 hour nap between 1-2:30 and goes to bed 7:30-7 am. No big changes happening in her life right now except I'm 34 weeks pregnant. Thank you again.
