Last week we ventured off to North Carolina. Our first stop was at our friends' homestead, "Honey Tree Farm"! Casey and Tori Ostwinch are farming for a living. They grow micro-greens, vegetable and root produce, raise chickens and even have bees on 1.5 Acres of production space. Honey Tree Farm has made a presence in their local markets and restaurants; their sales are growing rapidly. Stay tuned for the next video on how Tori raises the chickens and geese!

Pete, what about when it's time to rest the land in the 7th year? My concern is that 1.5 acres is not enough space to move all of the gardens to new locations of rich soil on the property. If the owner farmers were growing crops solely for their own consumption then resting their land for one year would not be a problem because they could buy their vegetables elsewhere. However, this is not possible if they are selling to local restaurants that expect it to come in consistently, and therefore while the food may look beautiful it would be absolutely void of proper vitamins, minerals, and nutrients every single year thereafter, and this is no way to treat paying customers to deceive them into believing that they are opting for very nutritionally healthy foods. In fact rather than you elaborating on the fact that your friend grows all of this on only 1.5 acres, perhaps you could suggest to your friend that with 80,000 a year that he should invest in a larger piece of property at least twice this size so that he can properly rotate his gardens to rested rich soils. As rotating is a vital part of proper healthy gardening. Thank you, and have a blessed day.

Good video. Thank you for sharing. You asked in the video, "when it rains 6 inches in one night, what do you do?" This is what you can do. Farmers in India are digging 4 feet wide wells to 10 or 20 feet deep lining it with rocks and concrete wall to hold excess rain water, also called rain water harvesting. The well is covered with a steel round lid to protect animals and humans. This water can be used to irrigate the land using a small motor. So this holding tank will prevent your farm from getting flooded. Dig channels to guide the rain water to the holding tank. Hope this info helps. Good luck.

These two are doing a tremendous job. They get a hard physical workout every day. Very nice soil! Yes this can be done on 1.5 acres but the agricultural inputs come from an external 5-10 acres. Pete Kanaris-- I liked your Richard Campbell video where he said "nothing leaves this place". As in all scrap gets composted, put back in the soil. Myself--- I have mango trees and a few others in a suburban situation.

Nice crops! About caterpillars - birds eat a ton of caterpillars (for example chickadees feed 6,000 caterpillars to one nest of chickadee babies) so I highly suggest doing everything he can to encourage birds on his property. A shallow water feature and some bird feeders (yes, the seed eating birds also consume loads of caterpillars) might do wonders. Cheers.

I used to live in Conover. I don't think I visited here, but it's a nice farming area.

Amazing that they are able to do so much with only 1.5 acres. What are the 3 vegetables he said are doing well? Korabi and what. I rewound it a couple of times but couldn’t understand, thank you.

If they are loosing so much valuable dosh to water/rain, , they could experiment with raised beds (inside and outside the tunnels). Just use a combination of hugleculture for the bottom bases and tip up with good compost. worth a try.
