Does your instrument sound like a sewing machine? Does a trill sound like "Click click click click click"? Well, you can fix it yourself safely, quickly and cheaply.

You could make perfect rounds with hole punches. They are fairly cheap, and you can buy them in any size. (Also an interesting tool if you want to make your own pads for your keys ;) ) Personally I would use bookbinders glue for these things, because it doesn't stain or corrode anything and is easily removable if you want to. But that's a personal preference. It doesn't hold as long as contact cement, but the contact cement can be harder to scrape off if you need to replace the pad.

Wonder if that’s the issue with my flute. I think it is. I thought it maybe was the pad was dry and the lack of plumpness caused it to click since it hits metal to metal instead of pad to metal. Thanks for the video.

I'm not sure who A. C. L- is, but I can guess that she won't like contact cement and key oil on her towel.

What sorts of repairs do you suggest not doing on bass? I'm pretty comfortable doing work on my Bb/A clarinets so I am curious what you shouldn't (attempt) to do on bass

Good question. I personally don't change pads-it's not that hard, but it's something that is easily screwed up. Bending metal is also something I would outsource ;)

It seems like after putting the cork on the post, it might have been interesting to see if adding thin cork to the G# Key would have brought it closer to in tuned since you didn't have thick enough cork. Just wondering if cork on cork is a "no go". Thank you for your channel. It has made me more excited about the bass clarinet than my old soprano.

This might be a remedial question, but what note do you tune your instrument to? I see that here you tuned the #G of the G. And in most ensembles, everyone goes off an A. But is there a pretty good note to bass ;) everything off of? When I tune to A I notice that my A is a little high and if I adjust to it, the majority of my horn will be low but the A in tune. I know that every note will respond differently and no instrument is perfectly in tune but where (what note) would the "average" be? I probably did a horrible job explaining what I'm asking but hopefully you get what I mean. Thanks! -GM

Geronimo You tune to every note! Tuning should be a never ending process, use the note that the ensemble tunes to (concert A), but use your ear to tune everything. There will never be one single note to tune everything.

Joshua Huff I agree that we all need to make in the moment adjustments when playing in an ensemble, however my question was more aimed at what note would be best for the instrument be physically adjusted to.

+Geronimo I use all 3 written 'B's (and 'E's/'F#'s if I have time) to tune with. I use the high 'B' to adjust the neck joint (or between barrel/upper joint), low 'B' to adjust in between the upper/lower joints, and middle 'B' to adjust between the bell/lower joint. This helps me keep all registers (roughly) in tune with each other.

Recently I noticed that my register key hasn't been working properly. When I try to articulate notes that use the register key they come out as if I am not pressing the register key. Is this a easy fix or should I take it to the repair shop?

@Earspasm Music If I want play clarinet professional (clarinet choirs/orchestra), what should I major in in college.
@earspasm
@earspasm 6 жыл бұрын
You should major in PRACTICING. (There are many, many terrific music schools in the world, and in the US-not sure where you live. Buf even if you are at a large university with a good music department, as long as you can find time to practice and have a good teacher, you can prepare yourself for a professional career. Many, many professional clarinetists DID NOT major in music in college, but had a good teacher and practiced their butts off.)

Earspasm Music I know you may not look at this, but I am in a similar boat. I am not sure if I want to go to college to major in music, but I want to become one of the best pros out there. If I were to go to school for a, let’s say engineering degree, where would I find the time in the day to practice so so much. And even after college, where would I find time for practice and extra activities after a 6am-6pm job of working my butt off? I’ll be exhausted! I live in Iowa and currently have my teacher (Corey Mackey; he said you two met at a clarinet convention) to give me lessons throughout high school. I know that since I’m a freshman in high school it may be a bit early to worry about this, but I really want to go into music when I am older but I also want to have lots of money to afford nice things and new instruments (which can be risky because performance majors rarely find jobs that suit them that way and I really would not like to be a music educator at a school).
