Wonder Badjao

Wonder Badjao

7 жыл бұрын

A segment we filmed for Earth Diary about the Badjao fishermen from Bohol, Philippines.
The BADJAO tribe are nomadic SEA GYPSIES. They can be found in SE Asia, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, with numbers around 100,000. Traditionally, the Bajau, even today, live mostly on the sea.
Badjao divers descend 20meters (65feet) to sea floor, hearts slows down to 30beats per minute, squezzes its lung to 1/3 of its initial volume, even without weights he is negatively bouyant enough to strive across the bottom of the sea as if like hunting on land, 2 1/2 minutes of hunting under pressure. He can still manage to stay as long as 5 minutes!

I am a scuba diver. I'm also from the Philippines and most people use the term "badjao" to refer to someone who is very poor or a scavenger. However, the real BADJAO tribe that originated in the southern part of the Philippines are great divers. I really admire how they hunt underwater with only a breath or two. It's rather sad that their good name is used as a term for low life people. Sending my best to all fisherman in Bohol and all over the Philippines. 👌 -Daisy

Thats because these badjaos that begs on public transports/streets are introducing theirselves as badjao, sometimes they are saying that they came to city coz their resources like house/boat are devastated by natural calamities.

I have befriended badjaos at Basilan, Sulu and TawiTawi. I've learned the art of free diving from them. It is the reason why my alias is "badjao" on my 26 years in the Philippine Marine Corps.

I remember when I was a kid, domestic flights was so expensive so we opt in to ride a ferry. We usually see badjaos every time the ship docked and we can see them, begging for anything, from the ocean. We throw pieces of coins, sometimes food. I was really amazed on their diving skills imagine me throwing a coin from 3rd floor of ship to them in the ocean, they find those coins in the ocean.

I began diving when I was around 7 years old since I enjoy the sea and it's not far from my house. I was able to hold my breath for two minutes longer when I turned ten since swimming is enjoyable. At the age of 10, I also went swimming with my pals in the middle of the ocean. I haven't been in the sea in almost 12 years, therefore today I can't hold my breath for more than 40 seconds.

You gotta appreciate how close to the surface this guy becomes negatively buoyant. Barely any fat there, just muscle. Used to do rescue exercises with a guy like that. He had more muscle mass but he would just sink unless he was packing air and it made him heavy to lug around in the water and pretty difficult to do the more complicated exercises with because he’d sit so low in the water, when stripped of his diving gear … then again, he’d get cold pretty quick, that was like the only thing I had on him xD. Super interesting comment. I was also curious about the origin of the language spoken in the video. I heard the guy saying some Bisaya words eg: "gamit" (use), & "trabaho" (work). Tho the Bajau traditionally come from south Philippines, Borneo, Indonesia area. When i went to Virgin Island (Bohol) the Bajau i met there were able to speak fluent Bisaya. It seems they have retained their traditional language, and have learned the local Bisaya language.

I believe bajaos were part of the lost tribes who travelled by boats going to their land of promise(Mindanao) for one and half years. Most of them landed in Butuan, hence 9 huge boats seen and is now in the butuan museum. But im sure during their voyage, they encountered storms and hurricanes and of course to consider boat maintenance as well.. so i suppose they had immediate landing in some areas like indonesia, malaysia, borneo etc... My father and his siblings were from bohol migrated by boat to southern leyte that is why our dialect is a Bol-anon accent. But my father and his siblings are very good fisherman too...they build their own boat, tools for fishing like "Pana" (spear gun) and gogles and improvised diving gear ...please watch The God Culture series in youtube and investigate their research about the lost tribes of Israel to see if pieces of puzzle found.

I learned to Freedive in 1979 in Cebu City. I use the Badjao breathing technic not the Commercialized Apnea breathing. Now Freediving is like Starbucks over rated.

My second time watching this outstanding documentary! It is by far one of the best videos about the Bajau ethnic group and their mastery of freediving. How did you choose the village & people to interview? Translating the Bajau interviews into English must have been quite a challenge. Who was doing the footage? Awesome underwater freediving shots!

If you travel by cargo ship in the some part in central and southern Philippines there are many Badjao that leave nearby. As a passenger on that ship we throw coins to those kids nearby and they will go and dive to get those coins. They basically asking us to throw them in the water and they will get it and show it to us they got it.
