Hi Amy, thanks for the shout out! With the moisture meter you have to go to the bottom of the pot and pull up slightly. You want to hit where the roots are but not pick up the moisture at the bottom of the pot. I carry a small dry dishcloth around with me to wipe off the tip. I've used a moisture meter for 7 years but have been growing plants fo over 50 years since I was a teen. When I started using a moisture meter the difference in my plants was amazing and I realized I had been watering some things way too much. Great video! My Big Red isn't budded yet but I have a pink one which is budding up nicely.

@@OrchidWhisperer Thank you Amy! I really left the comment for people in the community who may be new to or never used one. I see people online saying moisture meters aren't reliable but I've often watched them use it incor4ectly. I grew up in a hous3hold of indoor plant growers and outdoor gardeners so it's in my blood! A house without plants is not a home in my thinking. Blessings on your day! P.S. while watering this week I found a couple of buds on my Big Red. So it begins! ☺

@@mollys1584 I'm so happy to hear your Big Red is going to bloom for you soon! I appreciated your comment about the moisture meter because like you said...if you don't use it correctly, it won't give an accurate reading. Meters are really helpful. They've kept me from making mistakes because I am a waterer. :) I watched my grandmother growing plants my entire childhood and she taught me the basics and the finer points of growing plants. I know what you mean about it being in your blood. Plants are wonderful, and I enjoy having a house full of them. Thanks for sharing, Molly...and have a wonderful day! Amy😇

@@OrchidWhisperer Awesome! I'm a waterer by nature too! A quick update on Big Red and thanking you for your video. She was looking washed out. I told you she's 15 but she could be closer to 20. Anyway I realized we'd taken down a tree last Summer which I didn't think would impact her but it obviously did. So after listening to you talk and share comments about lighting I took her out of her SE corner, put a Hoya in her place and moved her to a NE window and she has gone from gray green to a beautiful green. Thank you!!! 😘

@@mollys1584 that makes me so happy!! 😊 The tree in my backyard has a huge impact on the lighting in my sunroom. The sun comes through the windows much brighter after it sheds its leaves...that's why I talk about light so much. Keep me posted...I cant wait to hear how spectacular she is when she blooms! I just realized these must bloom in May. So when my Big Red is done blooming....yes he's still blooming...then the EC will bloom. Neat! 😇⚘🌷

@@marcellusbrown57 Hi! I love plants a little too much sometimes and I run out of room, so I give lots of them away, and if theres one that isn't performing well, I either toss it or give it to someone who wants to try to make it thrive better than I am. Unfortunately, sometimes there's just not enough space or time.

I live in a complex of apartments for older folks. We have a community room with the laundry facilities attached. COVID stopped the community activities and they just haven't started up again. OK, now to the issue! I noticed long ago that there was a huge old holiday cactus in the room that no one was looking after. When I'd go there, I'd throw a cup of water in the giant planter. I recently got it in my head to repot the plant once the blooming season is over, not that I expected any blooms. Today I went into the room and lo and behold! Someone had repotted it with nice soil, newly moistened, in a new pot! There are even tiny white buds on some of the leaves. It's not a very attractive plant; full of thick, woody stalks and droopy branches, but I will keep an eye on it. There is a lot of indirect lighting in there, so it should do well.

Thank you for the blessing at the end of the video, you are saying it in such a heartfelt way that I feel it in my heart across the ocean all the way to me in Norway. 💟 When it comes to clay pots, I think that's a preference... They don't work for me... With plastic pots I lift the pot and the weight tell me if it's time to water or not, then I of course take into consideration that some are to be left lightweight (to a certain degree) in Winter. And some houseplants should never get lightweight. I feel that I have no control of the watering with clay pots because of the weight of the pot itself, and also because they dry out faster. 🙃 I noticed that the person who recommend clay pots also meant they were the right thing for Schlumbergeras, and your plants are the best proof of that not being necessary. 🤗 I had Easter Cacti for many years. Less water in Winter and they bloomed like clockwork in Spring. But they got too big, and too "coarse" (meaning the leaves grew very large). And they are more sensitive to too much sun, or too much water or that they get way too dry, then the leaves will get discoloured... So I ended up with getting rid of them to get more room for my Schlumbergeras. Flowers are not enough, the plants need to be attractive the rest of the time as well... 😉 I bought 2 new Easter Cacti this year, and it will be interesting to grow them again. One thing I bring with me from my last experience is that I will fertilize them less than I fertilize the Schlumbergeras, because I don't want the leaves of these plants to get "oversized"... I agree with you that there is not much good information about Easter Cacti from people with actual experience, so will be interesting to follow your journey with the Easter Cactus, and all the feedback that you are getting in from experienced growers. 👍 Your Easter Cactus is lovely the way it is just now. Leaves have a nice colour and a nice size. 👍

Hi! What a helpful and beautiful comment...thank you! I use the same technique with my plants as you do...I lift the pots to see how heavy they are for moisture. I've done it this way for so long, with really good success...so that's what I'm staying with. It's really good to know these get huge and unruly. That means as soon as this one matures, probably this year, I'll be pruning it back so it won't get out of hand. I'm looking at my Big Red Schlumbergera right now and wondering how much to prune, he's sprouting clades everywhere! :) Thanks so much for sharing your experience, and feel free to continue to do so as I progress with this series. There's so little information out there, and I'm very appreciative of you telling me about your journey with them. Happy growing and have a blessed week! Amy

Look out for thrips ; they love Easter cactus more so then the other holiday cactus. Lynn from Ireland cued me in on this. My otherwise healthy Easter cactus growing well all this past year, started to drop claves like crazy. I've never had thrips so I used a magnifying glass and saw the boogers ! They were sucking the life from my plant. I needed it ,stripped it of all thrips and washed the roots and fresh repotted . Extra dose of Neem!💚👍 Keep Easter cactus away from your others,if you can. Hi Tammy!💚sorry u threw your one plant out. It could have been saved by isolating it while you worked on removing it from it's original container. Then you could have washed the roots thoroughly with facet water; then spraying heavily with Neem and repotting in Newport of fresh soil. I then resprayed and isolated it. The existing plant that you kept I would heavily spray with Neem, plant and dirt! Isolate from your other houseplants. If you want you can do what I did with my plant that I found 3 thrips on it. I was able to save a small part of my infested Easter cactus. I also went around to my other house plants and gave them a good spay of neem.hope I could help!💚👍

There are two types of Easter cacti. I can no longer find any articles referencing this. Years ago I had an Easter cactus that I finally lost in a move. That cactus had very fleshy segments with many fine aerial roots between segments. It bloomed at least twice yearly, usually in the fall and then again in the spring. The one I got around Easter 2022 is like the one you have here. It has yet to bloom. Are you familiar with the two types?

It’s fleshier and sort of fury between segments and at the end. I did nothing special to it and it bloomed at least twice a year. But the one I have now obviously needs special care.
