Christ's resurrection inaugurates a 'new day'. The Fathers of the Church called it the 'eighth' because in it the seven days of creation find fulfilment. To extend the joy of this 'new day', the Easter celebration has been extended for 50 days since the 2nd century. During this time, the liturgy helps the believer to penetrate more deeply into the mystery of Jesus' resurrection. But why 50 days?
This time, called 'Easter time' lasts fifty days, that is, seven times seven days and is composed of seven Sundays, plus Pentecost Sunday. The number seven in Scripture, both Old Testament and New Testament, is an image of fullness.
0:22 The 50 days
0:39 the paschal season
0:51 the number 7 in the Bible
1:07 The Jewish holiday Shavuot
2:01 The Passover Time and Resurrection
2:35 The prohibitions of the period
2:52 General rules for the ordering of the liturgical year and calendar
