I find people complaining about the “waste” or slash of the box wedge… I love that stuff to a point. It makes great kindling and material for our huge homemade shop stove. The other thing is that the box wedge accommodates and returns all sizes of butts. The six wedge is great for up to 18” or so but then you are resplitting pieces you have to manually return. With the box wedge it seems like most of everything gets returned with the recycle, big or small, until it’s gone. This is a huge time and energy saver in my eyes. I don’t mind there being some small splintery stuff in there if that’s the trade off.

With 2 people and a conveyor the 22 28 will do 2 cord an hour with the right size wood and the 6 way wedge. The 12 22 cycles faster but struggles with gnarly stuff so in my eyes it evens out to the same between the 2 machines. Happy splitting enjoy the machine. Youl wish you got a conveyor haha

Chris, I always enjoy your vids. Thanks for posting. I think it would be a positive thing if Andrew Easton made a quick vid on the ideal direction to place logs in a box splitter. When possible, it is always better to have the largest diameter of a log in the front and the small end at the push plate. This keeps the grain direction lower in the rear and higher in the front, helping to keep the the wedge from needing to cut across the grain from front to back. Less force needed to split as well, which makes it all go a little faster.

Whew, proper splitter makes all the difference. Woulda went Eastonmade when we got our last commercial grade splitter, but I had not heard of them then... Sure make great lookin stuff! Ours, is built pretty much as tough. The greatest help on a splitter if you wanna split fast in our ( son and I ) opinions are/is: Must have log lift. For lift and "table" use when level with splitter beam. Keeps wood up off ground and easy to grab to keep splittin. A split end table that your split stuff can pile up on. Ours is just the right height to have our big wheel barrow at the end of table, push wood into the barrow and run it off to be stacked or piled. We do both, stack in face cords and haystack too... Just for our home woodstove and firepit and camp wood use. We usually go through about 5 to 6 cords a heat season, another 2 for firepits... All Northeastern hardwoods, blow downs and tree service yard drops... The 4 and 6 way wedges are also a must have. Make quick work! Make a huge pile of scraps under the machine, but it all gets burned.. Auto-cycle hyd. is another must have. Ours auto returns, we have to hold it to split... Big thing too is the machine needs to be high enough so there is no bending over while in use. Our work surface heights of splitter, lift and table are all waist high. Makes a big difference! Stay strong!!

Chris what’s your thoughts on the “trash” produced? Do you think it’s excessive with the box and 6 way? You did one cord…now spread that out over a log truck load. My opinion the 4way is still the most versatile, least trash generating wedge. Pieces don’t “fan” out as much which in turn not causing pieces to fall on the ground. Nothing worse in my book than picking a resplit piece off the ground again and again. Poor Tony…only guy not making money off commitube and gets worked like a dog while the other 2 run around with cameras like a 5 year olds mom at first chunky cheese birthday party!

Great video Chris. Now that you have ran that 3 different machines and had some time on them what machine would you pick Now out of the Ultra, 12-22, or the Axis and not using price as the main factor more based on production and quality of end product? Then based upon 1 man versus 2 man production team what one would you pick and why? Last but just as important box wedge versus a standard wedge design how much more uniform end product and is there that much more waste that would make it undesirable to get a box wedge. Thanks Chris for all your feedback.

I would recommend that the person handling the hydraulics be the same person adjusting the wood for the next pass. That way you don't accidentally get someone's hands caught up in between the splitter and the wood. It looked like the valve kept resetting when you were starting a new pass. In an operation like yours, do you see the box wedge as a good choice or a waste as it makes it difficult to separate ready to burn and wet oak? Since I sell mostly to campers, am debating on if a box wedge would be a good way to go for me. I get the same size logs as you do.

It does alright just slow,, the Japa 405 with the identical perfect splitter run three times as fast when splitting wood and automatically. It doesn’t struggle to split the wood like this does. Don’t flip the wood over after it’s halfway through the log just hit the hydraulic lever to continue splitting this will save you time by just letting it do it’s job. Also the Japa has an elevator to load the split wood into a trailer or truck. The primary advantage of the Japa 405 is it only requires one man to operate at peak efficiency.

Great video Chris with Tony and Harry. If you got the 12-22 would you just go with the 6 way? You get pretty good quality straight grain wood. Looking forward to see the splitter on Harry's channel Driftless Homestead! Stihl hats looked nice, but i really like the beaver Hsts you made. GNI

I will have Harrys splitter on my channel for about a week , then it goes down the road to Harrys!

Have you ever cut wood for wood boilers ? Is there a big demand for people buying boiler wood , or do they pretty much cut it them selves ? Just asking

A little, my market is for fire place firewood. Mostly.

Watch your fingers guys. Chris, you will find the 12-22 with the 6 way wedge much faster then your current splitter and easier on your body. Using the same approach, 1 1/2 cords an hour is easily obtainable.

Yes! You are correct, I use it all this week and finish the entire truck load! Just watch!

I’m not sold on the box wedge. It seems to shred the wood and leave a lot of debris. I’ll take Chris’s Splitter with the fast cycle any day! Thanks for the Demo🪵👍
@thefirewooddoctor2 жыл бұрын
Yep, lot of waste. But it cranks out the firewood to size in a hurry. Is all about speed of production on bigger rounds.

it is for big ugly wood you would not want to split any way makes salable split wood out of junk!my gripe with easton made is getting one i did not order one last wood season due to the wait now it is even longer i wish some usa made companies would make a copy i would pay 3k more to get it in 3to4 mo.

@@andrewslagle1974, Wolfe Ridge has a wait time of 24wks if a dealer near you doesn't have one in stock. Always that brand to consider.

Did you sharpen the blade edges? You get a lot less waste and better looking logs, as well as reducing stress on the machine if you do
@InTheWoodyard2 жыл бұрын
I did not and thought that they are supposed to be NOT sharp.

@@InTheWoodyard I run the box wedge, I get less waste, less flying timber, less shock on the machine and generally a better product with sharp blades and advise all my customers who buy Eastonmade from to sharpen the blades. Try it, it makes a difference.

this is cool, my only thing is it seems to have a lot of crumble that could have otherwise been intact twith your ultra

After a week with it I got much better with adjusting the wedge for great splits.

Chris, maybe you only need a big staging table beside the ultra. Especially working with out additional help

What jumped out at me was the box wedge generates a lot of what I call hairy wood (looks like your splitting elm). You'd definitely want you gloves on for handling it and I wonder if a lot it would stack as well. Both wedges generated a lot more waste and kindling than yours. You'd probably figure out how to minimize it with experience. One thing for sure is no one will ever accuse Andrew of not putting enough steel in his splitters.

Yes, after a week with it I learned how to adjust it better for each size or round.

Cycle times definitely fall with a box wedge, still love the machine. Customers love kindling, and when it’s bundled it’s worth $$$$$$. What size is the box wedge? Didn’t get to go with eastonmade but I do have a box wedge machine coming next month. I can’t wait. Maybe next year I can get one from Andrew. I do like the way his works off of the ram, so you still can adjust the 4 & 6 way. 👍 HUSQVARNA 👍
