In this video we use computers and science to actually test if the Flowmaster Delta Force Cold Air Intake install on the AutoEdits Jeep Wrangler actually makes a difference in the inlet air temperature... this is a fun one!
There's a lot going here... first I'll run you through the items I'll be using in the video like the Delta Force Cold Air Intake, the tuning module from HPtuners called the MPVi2 and the VCM Scanner software... running on my super sweet Alienware 13 laptop.
We'll go for a run in the Jeep with the stock air box and set a baseline for what intake air temperatures we see.
Then we do a very detailed removal of the stock intake and assembly and installation of the Flowmaster kit. After that... it's out for another run with the HPtuners software data logging all our information and see if the new Cold Air Intake lives up to it's namesake!
*One side note: This particular intake is in the process of getting CARB certification in California so check the website at the link below for it's availability there... otherwise... get one in the other states now!
Please give me a follow over there on the Instagrams:

I installed an Injen CAI in my '13 Sahara and added the performance tune from a FlashPac w/ throttle adjustment. It made a world of difference and cost me less than $500. When I had some work done at a garage my mechanic told me the Jeep took him by surprise at how much quicker it was over other Jeeps he's taken out. I can't imagine my Jeep without one now. I also have a prefilter but I haven't installed it yet. Love your videos and your Jeep man!!

I put a s&b intake with the dry filter on my 2013. nice throttle response and you definitely can hear the intake system now. plus S&B stands behind their product and if there is ever a warranty issue they will cover the bill. After a 3k trip including really dusty roads. Pulled off intake from throttle body and and no dust was present in the body. Very nice filtering job. Great video Jason

i give you credit for staying in character. LOL... I had an early K&N intake on my 3.8 JK. I took it off. The "cool rumble" sound of acceleration was so loud, it resonated inside the cabin. I couldn't carry on a conversation with my wife. It got old, real quick. Went back to the stock intake. This weekend, I'm putting on a copy version of the AEV snorkel. Why? Because I can. Thinking I'll do a video of it if time allows. I currently have a Diablo Sport Trinity tuner. Thought about HP a while back, but they didn't have support for my Jeep back when I looked. Nice that they do now. I may go that way some day. Might be nice to have with my '15 Ram as well.

Great vid and great detail. A lot of folks have already said what I was thinking. Oiled filters aren't the best for dusty environments and I worry about water crossing with that design. When i installed my TRD CAI on my 17 Tacoma, Toyota gives you a wide open 'mouth' piece to replace the stock fender intake piece. However, the diameter of the mouth piece was the same except the stock one was shrouded 180* on the bottom side to prevent water intake. I left it since i felt the protection from sucking in water was of greater value vs. the 1cfm (assuming) of more airflow. Be neat to see a snorkel test next after some time with this setup.

Great video. Something I notice that you did not mention, was how to clean a paper filter. Some of people that watch this video. Probably have never cleaned a paper filter. With that in mind, I think it's worth mentioning this helpful tip. When and if they decide to clean their filter (regardless whether it is paper or a rechargeable K&N style) out with an air hose they will want to.blow the air from the inside towards the outside. As opposed to blowing from the outside in, this will prevent from pushing the dirt further into the filter. Other then that one small detail good video. I like the way you made it comically in some spots. Little stuff like that helps too take some of the anxiety out of putting parts on your vehicle. Thanks for a great review and installation.

Add a throttle body spacer. The spacer doesn't do much by itself but with the cold air intake it makes a difference. Not much but something. Try it out. I don't like the top heat shield. It doesn't prevent much heat but it does take away from airflow. Try it, if you like it you're welcome 😁

Great video Jason. I especially liked the fact that you combined evidence based findings with your personal feelings about the CAI. After all, who cares what the research says if we don't like it. I live in Florida where if you are going to add a CAI, you might as well add a snorkel instead which have been said to possibly provide cooler air to the engine.From all the looking and reading I have been able to find it seems that all the evidence provided for or against snorkels is subjective. At the very least a snorkel does provide a higher air intake than the stock intake. Whether this can provide consistent protection for flooding is another matter. Does this protection warrant daily use at the possible loss of performance? Does the snorkel even affect performance? The only real evidence I have been able to find was the "Jeep JK RIPP Supercharger SNORKEL TEST" videos run by RIPP Supercharger. These tests seem to suggest that adding an above the fender snorkel (AEV style) with what seems to be a prefilter, does restrict airflow and thus reduces HP. But I question the validity of this test in terms of being indicative of snorkels in general. For one, the test uses a specific snorkel with an attachment that may be the cause of airflow restriction. Secondly, the test is run in a garage. This hardly replicates real driving conditions, specifically the ram air effect that could possibly increase the airflow lacking in the test results. I have a hard time accepting that no one has taken the time to properly test performance with a snorkel versus without a snorkel. I am encouraged by anecdotal evidence by owners who have added snorkels, but would like to see this backed by research based evidence. Does you know of a valid and reliable real world driving test that suggests whether performance is hindered or bolstered by the addition of a snorkel?

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the newer trucks don't react well to oiled air filters and that dry filters led to less problems. In testing with my Hondata on my Civic Si, I had much better intake temps in the evening. Same thing there? Also, in cleaning that sensor. Do you think that would have had and bearing on the numbers? I know it’s small stuff. But...it’s still.

Howdy and welcome to the Jeep life! Long life in a Jeep depends on millions of things... but if you change the oil and filters on a regular basis and go off roading with the mindset of "I still have to drive this thing home" Your Jeep should last a long time.

I might have missed it, but was the ambient air temp the same during both tests? That might impact the results slightly. Testing in the cool of the evening vs. noon would make a difference I think. Nice video.

I think cleaning the mass air flow sensor and throttle body did more than the new intake and had you done that before changing the intake the result would have probably been the same. I just do not see 200- 400 dollars worth of performance. Great vid, got a chuckle from your get up.

Thanks for watching and taking a moment to comment! I am not a fan of any "throttle commander" type modifications. I recommend getting a hand held tuner like the super chips or diablo sport or even the HP tuners software like I used in this video (but that's a little more advanced). Those handheld tuners offer the ability to do preset tunes and also check and clear engine codes and are nice to have.

Jason! Great video, thanks for sharing this, do they make one for the JL 2019 Rubicon? I think it is cool air like you said, not cold air intake, probably a snorkel gets you to true cold intake especially in the desert where the engine heat and air temp is going to be v high. You ever come to N Cal to wheel?

Great work Jason. How would u compare a cold air intake with a snorkel? I guess they would be very similar in terms of air temp and performance. Plus, a snorkel should provide a cleaner air since it's a 4x4. Volant makes a great snorkel/intake combo. What do u think? Jason Holmes part 2 coming up!
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 5 жыл бұрын
HAHA! Yes, the snorkel by design is the most effective "cold air" intake but I'm not a fan of how they look... especially since I almost NEVER encounter deep water crossings... Kind of like driving around with a surf board on the roof rack but don't live near the beach...LOL

I have a question - did you account for ambient air temp? The reason I ask is that it looks like it was later in the day for the second run. Wasn't it slightly cooler outside as it got later in the day, and could that be responsible for the few degrees of difference between the two runs? Love your videos - keep it up!

Enjoyed the video. How did the Delta Force do on the uphill section of the road? Where you able to keep it in a higher gear or post a higher speed? Just curious since the butt dyno is a little subjective (;-). I've been kicking around the idea of a throttle body and cold air intake on my mostly stock 2016 JKU Sport. I upgraded to 33's on M/T wheels and I've seen a decrease in MPG and need to down shift sooner on uphill grades. Since I'm not ready to add a turbo (a$ nice a$ that would be), a little more horsepower would be great.
@AutoEdits

Gearing might help you but is expensive. You should be at least 4.10 with those tires... I did notice a slight difference in the wide open throttle pull but the most dramatic difference was in the part throttle stuff around the stop lights... felt more responsive.

Quick question Jason, the data does indeed show "cooler" temps but what about ambient temperatures. What was the outside temp when establishing your stock baseline compared to the outside temp after the cold air intake was installed and tested.

The "cold air intake" is definitely a mod I have gone back and forth on doing. Very interesting to see that it does indeed bring cooler air into the engine. My big issue is that my Jeep does see some water crossings...though, I usually go very slow through them. Many people have said that if you want a "true" cold air intake, you need to do a snorkle set up as it pulls air from completely outside the engine bay. Would be interesting to see the air temp comparisons between the tradtional cold air intake and the snorkle as well as if you still have the increase in throttle response/fuel mileage.
@AutoEdits

These are really fun upgrades to do for me and this one actually showed improvement both in actual data and in feeling behind the wheel so it was a big win. Maybe in a few months I'll do a snorkel and see the difference there!
