Hey y'all, I'm not worried about my little dude climbing this yet but you could easily modify this to have the slats running vertically! I will add some plexiglass over the slats and that should work fine. // Thanks to SimpliSafe for sponsoring this one, they're an awesome modern home security option: simplisafe.com/crafted

My youngest was Houdini by your sons age. He would hurdle a baby gate in a split second. We would stack them and he could still get over them fast. We were blocking off a little hallway that was pointless in our house because it lead basically nowhere and we aren't even sure why it was built. So we decided to place a small chest of drawers that had 3 drawers and a bookshelf on top sideways in the hall to block off the hallway because it lead to the stairs we were trying to baby proof. So one day my mom is here watching baby and she goes to the bathroom only to come out and not see my son. She could hear him but couldn't find him anywhere downstairs. She walked around the corner following his sounds and looked up and found him on the top shelf of the bookshelf just laying there like he was a shelf full of books. Lmao she tells me this story and I'm calling bullshit the whole time lol. Than one day I was with my son and went to the kitchen for like less than minute and couldn't find him and like her I heard him but couldn't find him. So I decided I would just go check the shelf and sure enough he was there just playing. He also could crack open any cabinet or drawer we put safetly latches on. No matter which ones we used (they didn't have the magnetic ones like they do now those would definitely be worth every penny) he could figure them out in seconds. So we finally decided to just take everything that we didn't want him to get into landlocked it up in a closet. We had to add the screen door hooks with the spring thingy you have to pull back on while unhooking to the very top of every door in our home to try and keep him from getting into stuff. Yeah when he and his sister decided they wanted into big brothers room we caught them stacking all kinds of stuff to climb on to get to the latch. I'm so glad they are now teenagers because teenagers are never gonna be as bad as those 2 as baby/toddlers. Lol

Easy fix for climbing the horizontal slats is just a small roll of razor wire at the top. I call it prison chic.

Agree with the others saying the baby will climb this, but even more so that latch will be really easy to open once he is walking.

Most of those gate type latches have a hole at the bottom for a padlock, I just used a locking carabiner clip and it worked like a charm. My son didn't figure out how to open it until he was about 4, by then, stairs shouldn't be an issue. ;-) Great job, looks awesome. Yes, it will become a ladder quicker than you think, however the suggestion to put acrylic on the front is a great idea and will be a perfect solution!! Nice job!!
@OriginalCinn83
@OriginalCinn83 5 жыл бұрын
There is a reason you don't see many baby gates with horizontal bars, I think you built yourself a baby ladder there. You should probably add a sheet of perspex or something to the front to keep the modern look but take away the tiny person climbing functionality.
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not worried about it but it'd be easy to modify if it becomes an issue, and I like this as a possible solution!

@@craftedworkshop I would add it sooner than you think you will need. As a father, my son would even climb over the plastic lattice baby gates. That being said. Really great project. I liked how you attached it to the half wall. You will be able to remove it when your son gets older and no have that high block of wood just hanging out on the half wall when the gate isn't needed. One other suggestion, I would have out the latch on the other side. Eventually, he will learn how to open that latch.

Nice build. I built a gate similar a couple of decades ago with horizontal boards. My baby daughter figured out how to climb, so rebuilt it with vertical boards (anti-scaling)
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, and good to know! I'm guessing if he's old enough to climb it, he'd figure out a way around it either way. He won't be playing by himself in this area, so I'm not too worried about it.

@@craftedworkshop I love your work and videos and I trust you know what is best for your family, but as you can see a lot of people have shown safety concerns for the horizontal design and the latch (the type my niece figured out very early on). Would it not be a good idea to add a stickied comment or a description update to at least acknowledge the potential for safety concerns in a more visible place. Some people may want to copy this who aren't as vigilant as you are. I would hate for there to be an accident because someone followed your "how to" guide.

I like the finish and design, and love those hinges. Thanks. I'm sure you want a different latch. That one will be very easy for a kid to open once he can stand or pull himself up to reach it. You'll find yourself having to use something to pin it closed, and be much happier if you put $20 into a safety gate latch that requires more finger strength, dexterity, and intent.
@ardemus

I also suggest updating the description with a disclaimer suggesting child safe latch. You really don't want someone building your gate as shown and having their kid get hurt.

First... Congratulations on the new house. As for the build we enjoyed it very much. Personally, I very much enjoyed the look of the perfectly spaced screw holes. As you indicated, they are much more aesthetically pleasing. We dont have children or pets so we dont have a reason to try to duplicate this so we are going to have to encourage our "little dudette" and her husband to provide grandchildren and an excuse to make this build. Great job, Little Dude. Your father did a really nice job on the build.

Just wanted to say thanks for this video! I adapted the plans and built a set of 4 35"w x 33"h fences for our rabbit area, and it works great! This was my first major woodworking project, and the steps in the video really helped. One genuine question: was there a reason why you did your sanding/finishing after assembly? I sanded before assembly because I couldn't use any finish (most are toxic to rabbits), but I'm interested in your thoughts.

RE: drywall anchors, the self-drilling ones are great, but I like Wall Dogs even better, they are screws that will hold a good amount of weight in drywall, and leave a relatively small hole if you remove or move them. ALSO, if you hit a stud with one, it just screws into the stud, instead of making a mess of things...

Awsome project. Think I might make one for my house to keep my dogs out of the second floor. My older dog is not so much of the problem, it's my puppy that's the issue while we are still training him to go outside instead of in the house. Planning on going to the meet and greet you will be at in the Rocker in Orange.

I would change the slats to vertical though. Especially since you little one will be trying to climb up stuff soon. Trust me, I have 2 kids of my own and a bunch of nephews. When they where that age, they loved climbing on stuff. If you. Notice most of the baby gate designs are vertical slats so the gate doesn't act like a ladder for them to climb up.

@@craftedworkshop sup man, I'm getting ready to do something similar. One question, do you think those structural screws for the wood columns were a good choice, or do you think drywall anchors would be better?
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 4 жыл бұрын
@@CallMeJuancho drywall anchors definitely aren't a great choice as they will fail over time. I used them to attach the strip for the latch but am going to be replacing them very soon with something like toggle bolts, which have a lot better holding power.

You may want to change the latch. Make it more difficult to open.

Putting the door hardware screw holes is better done with a automatic center bit it helps with aligning the hardware to make the door hing plumb

Vertical slats would be better but I don't think it matters, he's gonna eventually figure out how to scale it either way. What you really need is a prison cell.

That's what people seem to be missing here, this is just to keep him from running around this corner and tumbling down the steps. Kids are resourceful little creatures, they'll figure out a way around.
