Finding the most profitable keywords for your website is one of the trickiest parts of good SEO - but its so important that you get it right. In this video, I'll show you my easy keyword research tool I use for my own clients. To figure out where they stand in relation to their competition, and which keyword phrases we want to target. This method lets you see exactly where you stack up in relation to your competitors, offers great suggestions, and shows you how hard each is likely to be, and how big the upside is if you rank.

I liked this video, it's clean, simple and quite accurate, albeit a bit basic. The most important thing for me when I do keyword research besides understanding search intent is to look at the top 10 in the SERPS. Basically, if I have a new site, I want to see a lot of bad sites ranking for a term OR that no one is really fulfilling the search intent well. Those are usually easy low hanging fruit. Once the link profile of the webpage is strong I'll just level up the difficulty of the search topics I go after. Another advanced thing is to look at the data of the sites ranking and finding correlation that shows why some sites are ranking and some are not (ie. the top 10 all cover certain subtopics whereas the ones below do not etc). Note, I don't do local SEO, so I can't really speak much on ranking local businesses.

Hey Wes, thanks for the video. It's pretty handy. I'm getting a better understanding of keyword research and how to use valuable tools to find the best keyword phrases for my business. However, I don't know what the next steps are to rank organically with these keywords on Google, unless under paid ads. Could you tell me what the next steps are? Thanks again! David

Yea, you'll then need to work those keyword phrases into your pages, and then build backlinks to them. I have a whole SEO playlist that should help you out a lot. Cheers!

Quick question Wes, what happens if I research my competitors (using KwFinder, SEMRush, & Ahrefs) & notice that there is a few keyword phrases I want to use. But, none of my competitors are ranking 1 through 3 because directory sites (thumbtack, Psychology Today, Yelp, etc) tend to take the top 3 spots. Is it still worth it to try to rank on page 1 of Google for these local keyword phrases, alongside my competitors? And, can a site (w/ DA score between 1-30) overthrow these directories (w/ DA score of above 90)?
