Riding a century (100 mi/160 km) is a milestone for any cyclist. It's grueling and challenging, but the victory is well worth it. I've ridden four long distance century bike rides (all on fixed gear bikes), and each one has gotten easier. I may have cracked the code for making century rides easy.

Saw this in the morning, made a PB&J sandwich and just jumped on my bike and rode my furthest ride yet. Thanks for the motivation booster 👍

In my early 20ies I did like 145km ride (minus some very steep hills I cheated) on very basic single speed bike (which I repaired on roadside) without any training before. Until then my longest ride was about 10km. I just mashed and told myself my goal is next crossing or end of field or next house on roadside. Surprisingly, that worked for me. I didn't know about proper hydration and eating but that wasn't critical.

when i talk to people about long rides, i always prescribe that they should be comfy in their set-up and to pack food and water, and to eat/drink little and often. everything falls into place somewhere along the way as long as they're comfy and fed, oh and know where theyre going. anything else is really just extra qol improvements.

I’ve ridden a 100 mile century ride…on a geared road bike. I can’t imagine doing it on a fixed gear😳. I find that quite impressive 💪.

Noice, you helped inspire me to do a century, on a fixed gear no-less. I've occasionally considering getting another geared bike for longer distances but ever since i did my first century, I was like, nahhh fixed gear for life. Having been used to training for half marathons, the conditioning schedules translated pretty well to cycling. A few training sessions in the weekdays and a long ride on the weekends that would gradually build up for the century.

Hydration, food , a little patience, and persistence are the most important ingredients for century success. And sunblock.

I think the most important part of training for a century isn’t fitness so much as getting your butt, wrists, and neck used to being in a cycling position for that long.

Nice video ! I actually have a project for next summer that is to ride 210km (130mi) and I started to train since 2 weeks. I dit like 50km and a 60km in the 2 next day without any big muscle fatigue. I feel like i need to train a bit more. But actually this video about long distance makes me feel like if I want to I will do it. So thanks, i will train more but let's go.

its about 10x more than my daily commute rides, but i always think its do-able depending on the route and how much you prepare for it.

I did a 50 mile without any training when I got my first bike. 🚴 I just enjoyed it, but a lot of KZfaq education went in (GCN).

Like any bike ride, it depends. Headwinds, tailwinds, drafting. SLIGHT hills or gentle rolling terrain may help.

I just realise I road 1,000 km this year on my single speed for daily commute in total. I now want to challenge myself to do a century, that's 10% of my year's ride distance !

If i wouldn't had to work the next day i would have finished. Kinda why i started chasing J for the last 15miles of my journey to just spend whatever energy i had left. Cant wait for the next one though

If you have enough miles in the legs then centuries aren't too bad. If you can ride 50 comfortably then 100 aint bad.

One day to do the Seattle to Portland 200 mile ride was not as fun as the 2 day, I was alone a lot... Have done the ride 5 times, and enjoyed 4 of the 5 times...

Could I do it on a Rail to Trails route? The hills around here are big! There is no way a fixed gear can ride a 100 miles on the road.
