1. Determine the slope: The first step in setting levels for your patio is to determine the slope of the ground. This will help you determine how much you need to adjust the levels to create a flat surface. Use a level or a string line to measure the slope.
2. Mark the levels: Once you have determined the slope, mark the levels for your patio. This can be done using stakes and string lines, or by marking the ground with spray paint. Make sure the levels are clearly marked and easy to see.
3. Excavate the area: Next, excavate the area where your patio will be located. This involves removing any grass, weeds, or debris, and digging down to the desired depth. Use a shovel or a mini excavator to do this.
4. Add a base layer: Once the area is excavated, add a base layer of gravel or crushed stone. This will help to create a stable base for your patio and prevent it from shifting or settling over time. Use a compactor to compact the base layer and ensure it is level.
5. Lay the patio: Once the base layer is in place, you can start laying your patio. Start at one corner and work your way out, using the marked levels as a guide. Use a level to ensure that each piece is even and flat.
6. Adjust the levels: As you lay each piece of the patio, you may need to adjust the levels to ensure that it is even with the surrounding pieces. This can be done using a rubber mallet or a block of wood to tap the piece into place.
7. Fill the gaps: Once your patio is laid, you may need to fill in the gaps between the pieces. This can be done with sand or gravel, which will help to stabilize the patio and prevent weeds from growing.
Remember, setting levels for your patio is an important step in creating a stable and functional outdoor space. Take your time and make sure the levels are accurate and easy to follow. With the right techniques and materials, you can create a beautiful and long-lasting patio that you'll enjoy for years to come

Not all Marshall installers are the cream of the crop, the ones that done my back patio done a pretty shitty job to be honest. For a start the pointing was different levels and thicknesses,the steps aren't the same height,the brick work wasn't that good and the existing drains are not level with the path but below so a possible trip hazard. I'm always blown away with what you achieve and the little details you do to make the job that much better. I'm just hoping when the time comes to get the front sorted you will be back to full health and ready to start the patios and drives again.

Hi Scott. Hope you're well. Quick question for you. I'm building an outdoor kitchen with patio area. The kitchen itself needs a 4" concrete blab, whereas the patio will just be a full bed on type 1. Should I build he slab first then put in the type 1, or whacker the type 1 all over, and then dig out 4" where the slab is to go? Cheers mate.

@@tidybrickslandscaping used Rawlplug nylon frame fixings (80x80mm) in the end after forensically looking at your video. So here’s the thing, being a mere mortal, I didn’t even know that hammer in frame fixings were even a thing until today! So I pre drilled the CLS batons with an 8mm wood bit at each end and then levelled the baton with a long sprit level and the. Using an 8mm masonry drill bit and a hammer drill used the existing holes in the baton to position the respective holes in the block work wall and then used the frame fixings with a hammer to fix the baton to the wall - not forgetting the spacers (made from a cut down piece of CLS).

Hello, I have a 30m2 beam and block patio area, built as part of my extension. I’m thinking of ideas and ways in which to finish this area and how to approach it with the block and beam. The B&B naturally has a little flex in it therefore I want to proceed with the correct method to ensure tiles and joints don’t crack. I’m looking at a porcelain tile finish. Will this require a fibre screed like I had internally then to lay the porcelain with a cement mix? Advice would be useful from anyone who has experience of this. Thanks
@tidybrickslandscaping

I’ve never laid a patio on block and beam before if you could possibly take any flex out of it that would always help if you can reach underneath for some support if you can lay on a cement bed and you should be fine 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
