The Bearded Axe

Another thing that bothers me with some Player vs. Environment larps or PvE is that the players almost always win. I share my thoughts on why and how I've seen it treated. But these are my thoughts. What do you guys think?

Question of the week: Tell me about an easy victory you remember and tell me another story about a hard fought battle (win or loose) you had experienced. Which ones have been more memorable for you?

I remember one easy victory. The reason I remember is that it was a confidence building moment for a kid on his first day. I was 2nd to the left flank on this ditch line. The newbie was to my left looking to avoid direct battle. I leaned over to him just before lay on was called and whispered "I am going to hit that guy's shield three times. On the third time, step to the left and hit him from his blind spot." So...lay on was called, I advanced and started hit the shield, and on the third strike the kid killed my dance partner as I died. The newbie then proceeded to run the flank and killed every single person on the opposing side. I wish I could say that I will never forget the look on his face, but I already have. What I still remember, more than a decade later was how the look on that kid's face made me feel. It was easy insofar as my briefly made plan not only went off without a hitch, but the result exceeded my expectation. It was easy for the kid because it was all backstabs, but it got him used to the idea of hitting people with a boffer. This is the only memory of a specific easy victory I have...and that's only because of the other factors involved.

Great story. This is definitely a strong exception to my stance. Another example are very young children could feel overwhelmed in a challenging situation. Again great point.

A great way we introduced the game to a large number of noobs one time was we did a lvl. 1 battlegame. All players were restricted to their lvl 1 abilities, which made it not seem so overwhelming against them. Then, just to give them a taste of what they could become if they played long enough, we did paragons vs the world. The paragons were outnumbered 3-1 and they wrecked the non paragon team, it was amazing. And the noobs were blown away by how good they were. Really fun day.

I remember being tired of playing what were essentially un-loose able quests, quests where the players had unlimited lives and could just keep throwing themselves at the bad guys until they finally died or were bored with the whole thing and would just give up. It was like Dark Souls. So I set out to make a quest where players were actually in danger. It was October so I gave it an undead/gothic theme. I informed the players that they had one life, and depending on how they died, they would become either a zombie, skeleton, Vampire, or werewolf and would now be against the party. It ended up being one of the more memorable quests that people participated in. Players told me they actually feared for their lives and stuck together like glue. They were practically forming circles around their healers because if they lost them then they would be fucked. I think they still lost a little under half of their players, but they pulled through in the end which made their victory so much sweeter. I've seen much improvement in quests since then, not saying its because of me, but I think a lot of people were starting to get bored with the nature of RP encounters in the game.

Great example. It does sound like a great mod idea. Also the sacrifice of success can pave the way to stronger characters and their bonds with each other. Much like the military.

As a LARP newb that only has one Weekend Warrior Experience to draw from I don’t have a depth of knowledge on this one so take this with a grain of salt. I found the combat at WeWa to be very intense. Every victory was hard fought because everyone is a PC fighting other PCs. Though some argue everyone is an NPC except the faction leaders. Nonetheless victories are hard fought because the four factions are battling each other. I also found since I am part of the smallest faction we were constantly outnumbered. My main complaint wasn’t how hard the fight was, but that victories and loses meant very little in the plot and game.

Dude. That's a bad feeling. I played a Larp where the veteran PC's were so powerful that the NPCs were stated way too high my little low level PC couldn't do anything to make a difference in the fight. That lead me to leave that larp for good. So I know how you feel lol

The Bearded Axe yeah it’s definitely frustrating. I have some serious complaints about the event but decided I’m going to keep going because I love the combat and company. Do you have any suggestions on a east coast LARP? I’m based out of Raleigh.

@@rugertarzan no suggestions during the covid lockdown unfortunately. I would recommend lands of exile. They are a high fantasy Larp so lots of magic and strange creatures.

@@rugertarzan if you're looking for a more combat sport Larp then look into a game called Dagorhir. Thaundor is the closest group near you. But no role playing, or plot. Just combat games and fun. It's a great way train and hone your skills for other larps though.
