Berlin is the Capital of Germany, but many of its most popular dishes aren't actually German. Here we talk about 5 things tourists, travelers and visitors to Berlin should try when they do visit Berlin.
#1. Currywurst - Bratwurst drowned in Curry Ketchup
#2. Berliner Weisse - Beer mixed with a fruit syrup
#3. Berliner Pfannkuechen - jelly donut that Kennedy made famous by saying, "Ich bin ein Berliner" which translates to, I am a jelly donut.
#4. Eat Turkish or Greek food to enjoy some of the international flavor of Berlin.
#5. Some of the German favorites of Berlin. Eisbein, Kassler, Bouletten, kartoffelpuffer, and so much more.

I tried curry wurst twice in restaurants and wasn’t impressed. It tasted too much like bad American BBQ sauce. But then I tried it at a place that was literally a hole in the wall at a train station and asked for it scharf. Then I understood why curry wurst is loved. I’ve got to go to that museum when I return to Berlin. I’m really enjoying your videos

Currywurst is great. Ok, II'm german and I know it, but if you ever had a grilled wurst with ketchup, you know the trick quite good. Currywurst in middle Germany is slightly different in the taste. You have to try "Milchreis", "Käsekuchen", "Mettbrötchen mit Zwiebeln", everything you see in a bakery (seriously), "Jägerschnitzel" (both versions, ask a Berlin person for more information ;-) ) etc. :D

I am from Berlin. The Currywurst has 2 different sorts of sausages. The first is like a bratwurst, looks normal and is called a West Berlin sausage. The second is a so-called boiled sausage. She is not bottled in a sham, but the sausage mass was poured directly into boiling water and cooked. If you ask why: The GDR export pig intestines to the West and they had no more. It is called Ostberliner Currywurst. The Berliner is especially popular on New Year's Eve. There it is offered in different variants. Classic with jam but also with nougat, eggnog cream. Chance also with mustard, as a small prank The doner kebab was invented in the current form even in Berlin. It was initially a dish on a plate of salad and kebab. The Berliners were always very hectic and had no time. Kadir Nurman, who immigrated from Turkey, took the ingredients and put them in a flatbread so it could be eaten on the way.

My trick to eating local food whenever I am in Germany or Austria: follow a bus driver or a local you know knows the area into streets away from the beaten path and into restaurants with black gothic letters on a green shield. Make sure there are no English-language menus inside, and that people are drinking beer. Sit down and order. Even if you get a surprise, it will be fun. :)

Berliner Weisse is a wheat beer (white beer), often served with woodruff or raspberry sirup in it. Since it contains alcohol it's not allowed to be served to under 16 year olds. It's usually drunk as a refreshing beer at hot summer days.

I do agree with these five tips! One thing I find very great about Berlin, that it is a great city to eat well if you are travelling on a budget. Restaurants are usually pretty cheap (especially on lunchtime), so I'd have authentic Italian pizza, Turkish meat-dishes, Malaysian food etc. for lunch and very rarely did I have to pay more than 10 euros for everything

Thai Food is also very big in Berlin. Next to vegan. And there are a few very (!) good chinese restaurants at Savigny Platz. For example "Good Friends". Maybe you have the chance to try. If you are in Berlin searching for German food, try one of the "Eckkneipen" and go for a Schnitzel with Bratkartoffeln (pan fried potato slices) 😊 Don't eat Currywurst in a restaurant. They are never the same as from a food stall. I lived a few years in Berlin and hope, you have a good time there 🤗

1) My favorite Currywurst kiosk is the legendary "Curry 36" at the Mehringdamm 36. Prepare for long queues all around the clock. One Currywurst is about 1.60 € if I remember correctly. 2) "tastes like tree pine needles" - is it the so-called "Waldmeister"? 3) You can also eat an American by the way ;) ("Amerikaner", a soft, cake-like shortbread with sugar, chocolate or vanilla fondant) 5) My favorite German restaurants are the "Speisenmeisterei Wiesenstein" in Steglitz (Swabian-German food - really good but substantial and filling), and the "Alter Krug Dahlem" in Steglitz/Dahlem. If you are into sweets, Berlin has some really great confectionery shops with long traditions like "Konditorei Rabien". The so-called "tree cake" and the "tree cake peaks with dark chocolate" are my favorite. "Tree cake" doesn't refer to the size of the confectionery but to the annual rings of trees.

No real Berliner says "Berliner" to that pastry. It's a "Pfannkuchen". In other parts of Germany "Pfannkuchen" refers to pancake, which in Berlin is called "Eierkuchen" (="eggcake"). Oh, and Eisbein is the greatest! :-)

I thought a pfannkuchen is called a Berliner outside Berlin in other parts of Germany and that Kennedy was actually correct when he said "Ich bin ein Berliner." in the context of his speech. Anyway, really enjoy all your food videos and love German food and drink. While in Cologne, I unintentionally ordered a *_kirsch streuselkuchen_* which was ridiculously delicious. 🍒👍
@FredLulle

You're correct.
@Purple.Tentacle
@Purple.Tentacle 6 жыл бұрын
You're correct, "ich bin ein Berliner" means "I am a person from Berlin". "berliner" as adjective means something from Berlin. In Berlin the jelly Donut is called a Pfannkuchen but in other parts of Germany a Pfannkuchen describes a different kind of food, so the jelly donut is called a "Berliner Pfannkuchen" there, mostly shortened just as a "Berliner". Also in some parts of Germany it's called a Krapfen. Analogies are "Hamburger" (x from Hamburg) or a Frankfurther (sausage). But who knows, since Kennedy didn't reside in Berlin maybe he secretly was a pastry. :)
@Astrofrank
@Astrofrank 6 жыл бұрын
You and Kennedy are correct, as Berliner has two meanings, as well as Hamburger.

I was told that I am a Berliner in German would be Ich bin Berliner, without the "ein" or one, which changes the meaning?
@cubeeater6458
@cubeeater6458 6 жыл бұрын
That is actually a good question. I've lived in Germany all my life and it's still not a particularly easy distinction. Kennedy's choice with "ein" was actually perfectly appropriate though because to me it seems to express a conviction he wanted to convey to give the people of Berlin hope. In that sense, I would say adding the article "ein" simply reinforces the quality of being "a representative of" or "a member of" or "a citizen of", as a kind of vow or oath. And this definitely seemed to be his intention. You are also perfectly right about the phrase without the adjective being used a bit more often, however, and I believe the reason is that we tend to use it when choosing to express belonging to a certain group RATHER than a different group, like after being asked the question "Where are you from?" or "Where do you live?" So, if my intuition is correct, if Kennedy had just said "Ich bin Berliner" it would have had an ill ring to it as it would sort of ruled out his being American - whereas "Ich bin Amerikaner" would have indeed been sounded like the right thing to say for him. We Germans also say things like "Ich bin Lehrer" for "I am a teacher" or "Ich bin Vegetarier" for "I am a vegetarian," because we see it not so much as needing reinforcement, but rather to quickly inform what category we are in.

I would also recommend Wiener Schnitzel. Delish and usually served with fries.

But that is not typical for Berlin and is not easy to get outside of Austria or Bavaria. In most parts of Germany, you will get a "Schnitzel Wiener Art".

I heard about a burger place called Burgermeister in which is located on SCHLESISCHES TOR, Oberbaumstraße 8 (not too far from East Side Gallery), an open-air restaurant under a bridge that used to be a men's toilet.

A little sidenode: You can eat Currywurst even in Spain (Palma de Mallorca), since a lot of German tourists go there for vacation. (Ballermann) I myself had there fantastic Currywurst afterhours ^^

Right now my two favorite German foods are Sauerbraten and German potato salad. I’ve had them both made by American cooks, but I wonder how different they taste when made by Germans. I usually use top or bottom round for sauerbraten. I better look into it.

Hi Mark! I have a question. I am traveling to Cusco, Peru and it is my first time organizing a trip and traveling solo. I booked a flight and I am flying with multiple airlines from Boston to Montreal then to Lima and then Cusco (I'm flying with Canada Air in North America and then Avianca when in Peru). On my itinerary it says the stop in Montreal is only 57 minutes long. I am very nervous that this will not be enough time and I will end up missing my flight from Montreal to Peru. All of the flights are on one itinerary, I did not book them separately so if I miss my flight because of the short connecting time will it be considered my fault? I cannot get a refund and cannot afford to pay for another flight.

Ate donor kebab every single day in Budapest. For about $1.30 I got a nice sized pocket completely stuffed and they don't go light on the chicken either. Really miss it, love the hot sauce on it.
