We finally tried Nasi Lemak for the first time after arriving in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Kuala Lumpur has so many culinary treats on offer and you're spoilt for choice but we obviously had to try the most raved about national dish of Nasi Lemak.
After our Nasi Lemak feast we were pleasantly surprised by another popular food choice which was Cendol. This was an amazing day and Malaysia has the best food one could wish for.

Hi folks. The basic Nasi Lemak is just a small packet of rice cooked in santan (coconut milk)and pandan leaves, sambal, fried anchovies, a portion of full-boiled egg and cucumber. It is usually had for breakfast and affordable for the masses. What you had was an updated modern version. As for c(h)endol, I prefer to have it plain and eat durian separately. ABC and Bubur C(h)ac(h)a are also popular desert drinks.

Every tourist only know about Nasi Lemak, there is another delicious Malay food called poppiah. The best one I ever had 12 years ago was at TAMAN TUN DOCTOR ISMAIL (TTDI) . It was a road side Malay hawker solely selling very delicious Malay Poppiah, just near to Maybank. Check it out whether it is still selling there. Don't miss out this wonderful food in Malaysia.

Hello guys, BEFORE eating Cendol, you'll need to mix the brown sugar with the entire shaved ice otherwise the "true" cendol flavor/taste will not be complete. In my opinion, don't add durian in cendol, it'll give that "love it or hate it" result. If you eat cendol again, make sure to mix the brown sugar, actually in English (for easier understanding) we called it brown sugar but in actual fact it's called Gula Melaka, which is another signature product from Melaka state.

Traditionally, nasi lemak is served with a hot spicy sauce (sambal), and usually includes various garnishes, including fresh cucumber slices, small fried anchovies (ikan bilis), roasted peanuts, and hard-boiled or fried egg. Fried Chicken, Lung, beef and so on is just a substantial meal for additional protein. My fav combination is nasi lemak and sambal kerang (shell) tho but you should try with rendang daging(beef) (authentic Malay food). and 'O' means original. so if you want to order tea/cofee/nescafe without milk, remember to mention 'O'

The nasi lemak you guys ate are the luxury nasi lemak with variety of "spoilt for choice" side dishes. This is a great introduction to nasi lemak. But do try the nasi lemak bungkus (packed) typically packed with banana leaf. I usually prefer the packed ones. It's cheap. Here in Georgetown you could get the cheapest around RM1.20-1.50 and it gets pricier depending on the size and side dishes they put in it.

I think it's pretty smart actually because most people really enjoy cendol the first time they try it, so it was absolutely a great idea to have that as a sort of palate cleanser with the durian. Also, fantastic option getting the premium mustang king variety. It's definitely a very robust & delicious durian, as a Malaysian I will say it is my personal favourite. Teh O’ basically means without the milk so it’s sweetened iced tea. Likewise kopi O would be sweetened black coffee. Nasi lemak is a fiercely debated topic in Malaysia. There’s good ones and there’s bad ones. Another famous place would be Village Park in PJ. It’s not close to KL so you might have to take a Grab/Taxi there. A lot of good nasi lemak are sold by aunties early in the morning at the side of roads. With regards to durian, D24 is good run of the mill durian. Musang King is arguably the best of the best. It has stronger flavour and is creamier. Think strong blue cheese. If you’re into milder flavours try D24 first or other varieties like XO. Durian is definitely an acquired taste. Like all Malaysian food, it’s full bodied in your face strong flavours.

To answer your question at 5:44, here's the explanation. 1) Teh is tea, and tarik means 'pulled'. It's basically tea with a bus load of condensed milk (I call it diabetes in a cup), poured between two large cups back and forth, primarily to cool it down a bit. The froth that appears is just the result of the pulling. So, basically teh tarik is a hot beverage. When you take it cold, it's no longer a teh tarik, but teh ais. 2. When you see an 'O', it basically means the beverage comes without milk, but sugar is added. So teh O is black tea with sugar. If you like your tea, coffee or Milo without milk and sugar, then you'd ask for Teh O Kosong or Kopi O kosong. 3. The normal practice here whn you ask for a cup of tea or coffee is to serve it with condensed milk. 4. There is another option where you may opt for evaporated milk instead of condensed milk. Then you'd ask for Teh C, or Kopi C. Add 'kosong' if you don't want added sugar. Hope this helps. About the nasi lemak you guys had - yes, its quite normal to add on some meats and vege to the basic version. The basic nasi lemak is just rice, sambal, boiled egg, anchovies, some peanuts and some cucumber.

@@sunkissedbucketlist I'm glad to hear that. Just a bit, nasi lemak used to be a peasant meal, just d coconut cream rice, sambal, a slice of boiled egg, slices of cucumber, fried dried anchovies n peanuts, wrapped in banana leaf. Nowadays, since d last 3 decades or more, nasi lemak is more lavish, with spicy fried chicken, beef/chicken rendang, seafood sambal n much more variety of dishes to go with d rice. Well, durian is a different story, although it's d king of fruit in Malaysia, d response varies from one foreign tourist to another, d smell n taste is quite strong, not to everyone liking. 🙂

Char Koay Teow - some of the best char koay teow can be found at hawker stalls/night markets 3. Curry Laksa 4. Satay - again you can find these at night markets/stalls by the roadside 5. Chilli Pan Mee 6. Chicken/Beef Rendang - you can eat it with rice, or if you're lucky enough you can eat it with Lemang (sticky rice soaked with coconut juice and heated up in bamboo sticks) 7. Apam Balik - dessert 8. Ramly Burger - Ramly is a brand name for the patty and you can find roadside burger stalls selling them. ENJOY!

Hello there, D 24 is actually suitable for beginner to durian. This type taste mildly sweet and milky not complicated as Musang King. D24 have softer smell compared to Musang King. Musang King is the king for durian lover, another one contender is the type called Blackthorn. The Blackthorn and Musang King are expensive varieties, that is why your cendol got higher price tag.

This answer is probably over a year old, but when you add an O after Kopi or Teh or Milo, is simply means without milk, but with sugar. If you want a black coffee without sugar then you'd say Kopi O Kosong. Just Kopi O would be black coffee with sugar. O or zero means nothing obviously, and kosong means zero. So kopi O kosong literally means Coffee with zero milk and zero sugar. The O is always for the milk and Kosong for sugar.

Glad to see you try the Wanjo nasi lemak. After this you should try the Village Park nasi lemak..order side dishes of their famous fried chicken and beef rendang. Cendol by itself is a good dessert so unless you can handle durian, you should try them separately because it doesn't give the cendol justice with the durian smell being overpowering.

As a local I would like to recommend you to ask for basic Nasi Lemak for the first taste. Basic Nasi lemak only consist of the rice, sambal, peanut, anchovies with boiled egg and some cucumbers. That will give you the authentic taste of Nasi Lemak. Do aask for the basic Nasi Lemak next time, next place. No doubt the sellers will recommend you every delicious dishes on the table end up they will kill the authentic taste of Nasi Lemak itself. Lungs, chicken rendang, beef rendang, fried chicken and everything else are just additional attraction with additional cost.

Hey guys, as someone who grew up in Malaysia, I don't understand why so many people recommend this place. This isn't traditional Nasi Lemak by any stretch. Traditionally, it is an inexpensive breakfast of rice cooked with coconut milk wrapped in banana leaf (to give it an aromatic flavor) with basic ingredients of sambal, anchovies, boiled egg and cucumbers. Nasi lemak literally means coconut milk rice. I guess for some locals more is better but whenever I visit Malaysia, I prefer the minimalist Nasi Lemak with the aforementioned ingredients maybe with a protein of beef rendang or fried chicken. They can be found at street vendors who serve teh tarik. Ask around.
