The eBags TLS Mother Lode Weekender Convertible is a popular travel bag at a reasonable price, but it lacks cohesiveness. View Our Full Review: packhacker.com/travel-gear/eb...

If you’re a frequent traveler on a budget, you’ve probably come across the eBags Mother Lode Weekender Convertible. It’s a popular bag from the Colorado-based online retailer known for selling travel bags and accessories. As its name suggests, the Mother Lode is built to pack everything you need for travel without a trip to baggage claim. And, eBags boasts, it “packs like a suitcase, carries like a backpack.”
We’ve been testing the eBags Mother Lode Weekender Convertible for two weeks in Detroit and Minneapolis, and we’ve got all the nitty-gritty details you’re looking for.
Overall, the eBags Mother Lode Weekender Convertible offers a handy list of features, but they’re not delivered in the most cohesive manner. We think the organization is pretty much spot-on and we like how sturdy the bag feels, but the pros mostly end there. The materials are nothing to write home about and people who have even a slightly wider frame will find the straps uncomfortable, as the buckles will likely stick into their lower back. We think this could be a good option if you're on a budget, but there are comparable choices out there for similar (and even lower) prices.

Pack Hacker... I appreciate the review, good information! It seems you decided early on that you hate this pack. Nothing wrong with the dislike, however it seems to flow into minor negative comments (ie, not a neutral review) throughout the video. There are indeed a few minor issues with the pack, but overall it's a fantastic travel bag.

I have one of these and I love it. I thought it was well thought out and of very good quality. I used it on a trip to Prague, Czech Republic and it was the perfect bag for the trip. I've been using Travel Pro for the last 20 years but wanted the option of a back pack and am very pleased with this bag.

I love this bag. I've had it for eight months now and have taken it on several trips -several overnighters, a week-long cross country trip, and even two weeks traveling throughout Scotland. I have to say it has held up really well, still looks like new and doesn't feel cheap to me at all. It holds an amazing amount of gear/clothing and I love the versatility. I've carried it using the side handle and also thrown it on my back as a backpack and sailed right through the gate onto planes where others were being asked to check their carry-ons. It fit well in the overhead compartment on all my flights thus far. I really love the compression straps - both internal and external - great for bringing home unexpected purchases and souvenirs. I do wish the waist belt was more substantial and padded, but I find that I'm only having to wear it for short distances before I'm taking it off again to stow. Overall, I'm very happy with this bag and think it's a good buy especially for those not looking to break the bank when buying travel gear.

If I had seen this video before I purchased the TLS Motherload Jr., I probably wouldn’t have bought it. Luckily I saw several other reviews first, and this bag has traveled the world with me for a couple of years now. I love it. The hip belt and flimsy water bottle pocket are my only complaints.

Guys, This bag has been updated since this review. Took the "junior" version on a 9 day Hawaii trip and absolutely loved it. The water bottle compartment has been updated (a 1-liter smartwater bottle is perfect) . The Junior version is small enough to fit under the airplane seat in front of you if you really needed it to which i think is the brilliance of this bag. Wish Packhacker would do a review of the new "junior". Also, I am 5 foot 9, with an average build and had zero issues with the bag clips digging into me. Used Ikea branded packing cubes. no issues. I dont feel the bag looks or feels cheap at all. Got it in red.

I just got it in the mail and it now has a trolly strap!!! No locking zippers, no snap in pouch, no luggage tag card holder, no detachable shoulder strap or waist belt. Also reinforced backpack straps and a change in water bottle holder..still not better. I really like this bad despite what people may say. I too wish they would review the Jr version as well.

This bag has been around the world with me several times. After a few trips a seam came loose on one of the backpack straps and eBags promptly sent me another bag free of charge. Two of my family members have this bag now and use it frequently. I choose this every time over my rolling carry on when it comes to economy flights. In most cases airlines that allow a personal item will let it slide since it fits under the seat. I'm beyond content with this bag.

My girlfriend and I both use this backpack. It's great in my opinion. I think it's well thought out and a good price. It is very durable, particularly if you are doing carry on only. We've done several trips a year for the past few years together. I can't speak to how it holds up with baggage people and checking bags. There is a lifetime warranty against defects, materials and workmanship. It has a ton of space and you can compress it down quite a bit with the compression straps.

I had more than enough different pockets to store all my stuff. Only now did i find from this review there is a water bottle bag! I had no idea!

I dabble in underwater photography as a hobby and travel with my scuba gear AND my photography equipment and use this bag for all my non-scuba and non-camera stuff- clothes, toiletries, iPad, etc. And, for me, it has worked out very well. Here’s one tip for the flimsy water bottle holder… once I have cinched down the cord I take the long end and put it in the outer compression strap just above it and it holds the bottle securely in place while walking. Thanks for all your videos and tips!

I got one of these back in 2012! It's held up quite well, though I really don't use it all that frequently. I also used to have a bad tendency to overpack. Now I'm thinking this bag could do perfectly fine for a week-long trip as I've gotten smarter about what I'd pack. I also love the compression packing cubes eBags has come out with. (I tested one with summer clothes - in a 'small' size, I can fit 3 pairs of underwear, 2 pairs of socks. 3 or 4 teeshirts, and a pair of light shorts. )

Just to chime in, I first purchased this bag in 2013 and since then I've used it as my sole bag for five two-week trips around Europe, a three-month trip around Europe and Asia, and dozens of 3-4 day trips. It's held up great and I consider the bag to be a second home to me. I've recommended this exact bag to four different friends who have all travelled with it extensively and love it. The only things that's broken on me is the sternum strap's attachment rail, unfortunately.

I’m glad this video came up in my “Recommended” videos. This is probably the most impartial and fair review of a backpack I’ve seen in a while. I am a big fan of EBag backpacks, but I too dislike the cheapness of the orange interior. I appreciate how you pointed out the pros and cons of the bag, and will use this information as I shop for a good, large pack for travel.

I've had this bag (gray color) for about eight months. The organization is great. I don't think it looks inexpensive and I buy quality. The back clips don't dig in, thank goodness, probably since I'm 5'5". I have eBag packing cubes and love how they all fit. I have put a lot of weight in it and the shoulder straps are still pretty comfortable. I really like it!

Too funny, literally packing mine up today for a trip to Chicago this weekend, I have two actually, the large in black and the red in the smaller and it most certainly does not look cheap. I have had them for years and taken them to several countries and many trips around the country and they look brand new. I don't find they feel cheap at all, they feel like luggage material and perform as such. I never carry it as a backpack, just carry it in a briefcase manner. I prefer to use my smaller one most of the time. I have many many bags, probably at least 4 different eBags bags, Peak Design bags etc etc and nothing beats my eBags for functionality and security. I gave my father an eBags Professional Slim Laptop backpack and he doesn't take care of anything and that still looks brand new. Even though you seem kind of biased against eBags like a lot of you guys seem to be, at least you reviewed them unlike Chase Reeves so I will give you credit for that.

venom5809 I don’t think it’s a bias but their opinion, looks are in the eye of the beholder as they say. I’ve had 2 eBags in the past and I totally agree they look and feel cheap when compared to many other bags. That said they are incredibly durable and if you can get them on sale not badly priced. I do think all the organizer features are interesting but I don’t find them well thought out from a feel and usage basis. One major gripe I had with them is the weight. They’re a heavy bag even unpacked. I do like that the team is looking at more “mainstream” bags in addition to the higher end stuff because not everyone has the kind of cash needed to splurge on a high end bag option. The great thing about all PackHacker videos is they go over the entire bag and while they give there opinions they also provide all the data needed to help someone make an informed buying decision whether they agree with the review or not. Cheers. :)

@@Christopher-today I agree with you. I like a lot of what was said about the bag, almost decided to buy it but saw this video and have decided against it because I plan to fill it up, which will make it very heavy so it's important to have comfortable straps, I'm also 6 ft and wide framed and wouldn't want to have the straps be uncomfortable. Also I'm definitely looking to use it as a backpack otherwise why get it at all. I hope they fix the cons in the future, it could have been exactly what I'm looking for. By the way I read over 100 reviews that agree with this video on Ebags website.

Just received this bag for Christmas and packed it for a weekend trip. I often times do 2-3 day trips for business and have used many different bags, backpacks and carryons n the past. This bag seems perfect. I am fascinated by the flexibility, versatility and capacity of the bag.I will not use the backpack function as the main mode of carry, therefore all the complaints about the back pack features do not apply much. My bag is a deep rich burgundy which is very attractive and classy looking. With all the pockets and design it seems like an excellent “one bag” that suits my needs. I’m not sure if the TLS Mother lode weekender is a travel backpack? It has that ability, but if you look at it as a small soft side suitcase or carryon with an option to backpack if needed it really shines. If you compare strictly to a travel backpack with products focused and designed primarily as a back pack, of course this may fall short. I noticed in some of you higher reviewed packs, the item is shaped and designed back pack with travel oriented features. Comments about cheapness I feel are unfair as I am rocking a smart dark burgundy color and I usually lean toward black. I truly feel nothing looks cheap about it. The deal on this product made it great value as well. As mentioned before that I choose to carry or shoulder strap this type of bag as it looks professional in doing so. I personally choose not to look like a Boy Scout when business traveling and if I need to hump a couple of miles, I will use one of my designed backpacks to do so...

Nice and fair review! I’ve had this backpack (along with several other pieces of eBags luggage) for about 13 years or so and it’s all held up extremely well. It is uncomfortable, especially when using the enormous volume of this bag… but it’s hard to beat at the price point. I REALLY want a Peak Design 45L travel backpack, but for my actual needs where I’m not shouldering the bag for days at a time, the eBags Mother Lode is definitely enough. It’s kind of a Honda whereas the Peak Design bag is more of a BMW. I like my Honda, but one day I want that comfort! The ebags, while having some cheap feeling materials, has held up INCREDIBLY well over the years and I have overstuffed it considerably at times. If it had a a better waist belt and nicer straps it would be easier to make an argument for. But, again, for the price it’s hard to beat.

I've had a few eBags products and they have all held up really well over the years. They aren't particularly fancy but the functionality and durability have been great in my experience. Thanks for the review. I haven’t been using the chest strap and since it’s been detached for a while I was struggling to figure out where it connected. I have enjoyed using the bag and love that mine is turquoise because it is easy to spot but agree it can get heavy and the waist strap hasn’t seemed helpful. I would also prefer something sturdier for the water bottle.

This was my gateway bag into the world of travel backpacks. I haven't used it on any plane trips yet, but using it on an overnight trip was perfect. Plenty of room for clothes and the massive accessory pocket was perfect for electronics. This is the first travel bag I've seen that actually has room for everything I would need to bring with me. If they actually had a decent harness system with a proper hip belt, this bag would probably be my go-to.

My family of 5 has used this bag exclusively for the past 10 years as our only luggage. We only pack carry on and these bags have been all over the US. They still look new and we love them. We love them so much that we have recommended them to all of our family members who also travel with them exclusively. We don't use any of the little pockets in the front flap and we use packing cubes. The only issue with this bag is that it can get heavy for me because I can pack so much! I use the junior version now. I also wish it came with a more substantial waist belt or at least offer one to purchase separately.

That's a good suggestion, better waist strap would make this bag much better. If they made one that could be a purchased add-on they could help people who do fill it and at the same time make extra money. The bag is is down to $70 online, I would pay $20 more for a more comfortable harness.

The bag is great and does not feel cheap at all. No mention of the price either cos its not £300 or $300 as many bags i've seen here with great reviews. Not sure this is a fair review. I've had mine for years, its still doing great and strap does not cut in the back - i'm a big guy too :) . Used my key holder and its still fine. Given how many years this bag has been out its still better than most of the new bags you've reviewed in this channel. Every single point you made seemed you were comparing it to the new bags built in this fancy tech era. The only good point in this review is that this might make ebags go back into the drawing board and build Mother lode TLS 2020 to rival the new bags. To tell you the truth , i was shocked to see the title, i would have thought this would be one of the first bags you reviewed in this channel given that its been out many years now. Its a bit wrong timing to review the bag, you missed the chance to do this review along time ago. Maybe there is timing aspect to bag reviews because you review come across like comparison. If you miss it, you move on or maybe have a series for ltravel bag legends so you can review this legend that has taken several families to several countries safely and securely over the years. This bag is a legend :) Just did a quick youtube search and found review of this bag 9yrs ago. What you've done is to pull a 2010 car and compare it with 2019 cars and not mention the car is more than 9yrs old, still better than some 2019 cars and cost alot cheaper

I have the junior version and have used it as my main bag on two trips so far. My favorite feature is the deep "forehead pocket"-- this lets you access your TSA 3-1-1 bag and alcohol wipes in front without rooting through the rest of the bag. It's roomy enough so you can shove your coat inside before the bag goes through the TSA x-ray machine (and reduce the chance of losing it on the conveyor belt). This is a bag that lets you pack enough and never too much, because too much will feel uncomfortably heavy, especially after several miles of walking.

I’ve had the Junior version of this bag for about 3 years now. It’s a bit of a cumbersome bag to deal with when packed out, but it has allowed me to fly carry on only with very little issues. I do agree that the compression straps get in the way and the zipper pulls are a bit “jingley”. I’ve not noticed that the plastic hooks holding the straps at the bottom have dug into my back, but I do worry about packing out the bag too much as I would expect the bag to fail at that point. Thanks for reviewing.

I have an old school EBags full motherlode from wayyy nack in 2006. Not 16, but 6. Yeah. It is still alive and doing well. I got the weekender about 8 years ago.. i love both of them. My only complaint is the lack of a decent hip belt. Either way I've been traveling with both, well since 2006 for anywhere to a long weekend to 5 months in mostly Europe. The water bottle pocket is useless on the weekender. On both the exterior compression straps kick ass. I've rigged a decent hip belt grom another brand, 8t cost me $19 but has made the BIGGEST difference.

Those little clips inside are actually for the interior compression straps. If you put the straps through the clips, they compress the clothes without squishing and wrinkling the edges. (I have another eBays backpack with the same feature.) I wouldn’t pay full price for one, but I’m considering buying one right now-$45! I like garnet, because it’s easy to spot and dark red is gender neutral (so my husband or I can use it).

Carried on no problem on 3 different airlines including the budget airline Ryan Air (lots of carry on restrictions unless you pay $$) I use cubes and found this bag ti be great. I think ebags quality has gone down since they were bought out. Certainly their customer service has. I have a few of their products and have been extremely happy with them. However, I had a vinyl liner tear at the seam in a crew cooler. This has been one of my favorite products from them. It's supposed to be lifetime guaranteed. I called them to ask about a replacement liner. I would have been happy to pay for it. Never called back. Email them, same thing. Since Samsonite took over, the company's just not the same. What a shame.

Nice review but you didn’t mention that the bag has a pull out handle and rollers as well - that would seem it be a key feature in its convertibility. I just bought this bag for a trip to Thailand - I agree with your review overall - seems ok but nothing special - on the interior of mine I was missing two pull tags on zippers which I had to replace. The interior seemed small for the carryons I’m used to in the past.

Please, could you review the Kathmandu Litehaul 38L or/and the Standard Luggage 35L backpack? If it is not possible, could you share what do you think about these backpacks answering this comment? I will go to the USA to buy one of them, but I don't know which one.

Does this backpack work as an under-the-seat personal item? If not, is there a similar one you would recommend? Please and thank you!
@PackHacker
@PackHacker 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jessica - working out whether this pack will fit under your seat on the plane depends on a few different factors. First of all, it depends on whether your pack is at full capacity or compressed. But most of all it depends on the airline that you're flying with as they all have different size specifications. You can also check out our new Carry-On Compliance feature on all of our full reviews packhacker.com/travel-gear/category/bags-and-luggage/travel-backpacks/ because even though this is a guideline for carry-on specifications if they're not carry-on compliant, chances are they're not going to be compliant as a personal item either. Hope this helps! 😊👍 - Rebecca

RIP to eBags. I think Samsonite has liquidated all the bags and shut down the eBags website. I wanted to leave a review on the Mother Lode and Mother Lode roller bag but it's been closed. I just took this bag to Italy and it was fantastic!

What are the really small metal loops for? There is one on the side and one on the upper side area and one on the lower front side of the bag.

Those are usually used for the tsa cable locks. You run it through the zipper and then the metal loop. Really great for compartments that have a single zipper that you want to secure.

I just received the Junior version of this bag in gray. I like the look and it appears to have plenty of room/organization for trips of a couple weeks or so. My issues are the weight (3.5 lbs. for the Junior) and it doesn’t seem durable. I’m going to Europe for 10 days in December with just a carry-on and can’t give up 3.5 lbs. of my limited carry-on weight to an empty bag. The zippers seem okay, but the plastic buckles, particularly on the compression straps inside, seem flimsy and prone to breakage. Same with the hooks that attach the shoulder straps to the bag. I’m just not sure I can trust them. I agree that the straps are not very comfortable, even with a light/moderate load. At $89, it was a nice deal, but I think I’ll be sending it back. Weight and durability are important to me, and this bag seems lacking on both counts. Thanks for the detailed review!

To me, it looks like a generic, no name cheap pack you would buy in the travel section of Walmart. Looks way too flimsy and cheap, especially for that price. That bag should be like $60, tops.

I've been using one for several years...and it's a hand me down from my gf who used it a few year prior to me (she bought a new one that she's used now for 3 years). Not flimsy or cheap at all imo. I'm quite certain it's miles beyond a cheapo bag in the travel section of Walmart. It also has a Lifetime warranty from defects.

I have the osprey farpoint 40 and the eBags TLS mother lode junior…. I prefer the eBags, a lot of it has to do with the pockets and the laptop storage pocket- I don’t even carry a laptop, but when the osprey bag is packed the laptop space is contorted and hard to use at all…. Now if Osprey put the laptop section at the back of the bag then I would probably prefer that. And yes I have sinful red 🫢

I love ebags products. They make good sturdy products. I have this one in black and the junior version in heathered graphite. I like the colors they offer because it makes it easy to find your bag in a sea of airport black bags. I have their packing cubes and small cord cube. They also come in many colors that is essential when the inside of the bag you are using is black, also having black packing cubes can make everything blend together and hard to see.
