C Spinner Watch Restorations

Күн бұрын

I purchased this Sully chronograph from eBay in a non-running condition. I chatted with the seller and he had attempted to get it running again, but admitted he got a little over his skis on it. I gladly accepted the challenge, though the watch arrive complete but in pieces. The movement inside is a Landeron 51, which was a common cam operated chronograph produced beginning in the 1930's.
The following repairs were needed in addition to a full cleaning:
- Mainspring barrel hole needed to be closed
- Made a new click spring from a guitar string to replace the broken original
- Hairspring needed manipulation to make it concentric
- Chrono eccentric screws required adjustment for smooth operation
I am an amateur who enjoys restoring vintage watches to working order. Constructive critiques of the process are welcome. I am always learning.

You had the same solution to me when the click spring in my Waltham AN-5743 broke. Made me laugh when I saw you go to a guitar case. I used an Ernie Ball 'E' spare from my Martin Sigma. Great minds, and all that! Good vid, I enjoyed it.

An excellent piece of work - particularly like the way you detail each piece and part as they are being removed - I personally would have spent a bit of time on improving the look of the dial though, given the care and attention to the movement. That said, a first class restoration, your skills and attention to detail are a credit to you - you are one of a dying breed, and that watch, as long as it is looked after properly, will still be working 100 years from now, which is more than can be said for all the electronic gizmos people have on their wrists today, all made of plastic (killing the planet), and all needing electricity to power them, which has to be generated................and we are told this is progress!
@csspinner

Thank you for the comment. I have an immense appreciation for these vintage watches and to me they’re truly a work of art- especially some of the beautiful old pocket watches I have the privilege of placing on my bench. Imperfections in a metallic dial are actually baked into the finish. Trying to remove them would destroy any markings as well. I learned this the hard way early on, as do most other amateurs. It’s so tempting to clean them but ultimately they need to be allowed to age gracefully, and some have such beautifully distinguished patina.

I watch quite a lot of watchmaking content. This is possibly my favorite. I'm mostly interested in the mechanics of the time piece and this one has elegance and complexity in it. A few of the parts, I didn't understand what they are for...like the sliding gear.
@csspinner
@csspinner Жыл бұрын
The sliding gear is hit once per minute by a tiny tooth mounted below the Chrono runner wheel (the one in the middle). When this happens the sliding gear turns the minute recorder wheel to increment it by 1

I actually saw a post on the internet years ago that instructed a person that had a watch that had accidentally gotten water inside to disassemble the watch as much as possible and then submerge everything in wd-40 to dispel the water. However the post didn't bother to mention that the watch would no longer function properly and would require a visit to a watchmaker.
