Documentary director Mariam Shahin has been making films about Gaza for over thirty years. She produced a documentary for Al Jazeera English in 2009 which told the stories of six sets of Gazans she’d followed for four years. When she moved to Gaza in 2005 she felt a powerful sense of optimism following the Israeli withdrawal. But by 2009, war had badly damaged its infrastructure, neighbourhoods, businesses and communities - and that optimism had evaporated.
In the wake of the war in 2023, Mariam looks back at these stories and reflects on the wasted potential, lost hope and devastated lives after sixteen years of blockade, poverty and conflict.

This is the most disturbing, shocking, brutal, thing I've seen in my lifetime, not this video, what's happening now, one of the most disturbing things is the denial by the rest of the world, not everyone but a majority of Americans, it's just sickening to see the responses from Israeli American and some European politicians and spokespeople for the media , we all have blood on our hands while this is allowed to continue, I pray that Palestinians will rise from the rubble again 😢 🙏🏼 🇵🇸

Yes that was quite a powerful sentence, and it's very true. At the time of filming she was only a teenager, she still had her entire productive life ahead of her. This needless war needs to end immediately, to prevent more innocent civilian deaths. Buildings can be rebuilt but try as we may, people just cannot be resurrected. Life is precious, for the sake of humanity we must bring an end to this needless violence.

Wow what a hateful people and comments, who if they knew anything about the real lord knows that only God can judge his people. We will all be judged for our actions and judgement against others when we meet our maker. It depends who you are listening to, i can make many examples but have you seen what is happening there? Palestinians are evicted from their homes every day and treated as second-class citizens, while after the Second World War it was the Israelis who were received as refugees by the Palestinians. Hamas is only in Gaza, Palestine is not allowed to have any army so they call Hamas terrorists @Cuinn837

Watched a few interviews of Israeli officials, and former ambassadors today. While some of the questions were semi-tough, the one thing they never asked about was what Israel wants in order to grant freedom and statehood for the Palestinians THAT is the question, it's what this whole conflict is all about! Of course, the question would be impossible for Israel to answer because there is NOTHING that will make them agree to this.

This is absolutely heart-breaking. Something similar (though not carpet bombing) happened to the French of New France, now known as “French Canadians”, the ethnic group. The Seven Years' War was a crucial turning point in Canadian history. With the Treaty of Paris of 1763, France formally ceded New France to the British, and largely withdrew from the continent. The French educated class packed up and left for Europe. However, the French of New France, in North America, had been pillaged to rags and ruins in the mid-1700s by a family of Jewish shipping merchants who somehow had a stranglehold on the French King. The French of New France had been pillaged to such a point that they were starving and living on blades of grass. One of the merchants decided to save their lives with a boat-load of flour. As traumatic as the British takeover was after the Treaty of Paris, the French population eventually recovered. They advanced from being an agricultural society to being urban as well and they are most notable today in Quebec. So, Netanyahu has bombed Gaza into the stone age. If the Palestinians want to hang on, if they need to hang on; they should do so, because they can still make a come-back. And the come-back can be aided by the fact that this is the modern world, not the world of 1763. Their story is at last spreading around the world, and there will be people of good will to help them. Something has to be done about Israel. Enough is enough.

I watch Al-Jazeera every day and check the site, but never saw this series. I'm from NY, living in C. America, and am hyper-curios, so I learn new things every day. Unlike many others, I knew the history of Palestine and how things came to be. Although I love antiquity, (the older, the better), I didn't even think of Gaza as such a rich depository of antiquities; kinda' surprised me. I read and study the Bible, but only recently did I find Gaza in scripture. Seeing those beautiful pieces and thinking they're likely destroyed made me so sad. I've been watching this horror since it began. I've wept, prayed, read, stayed up all hours watching everything that happens, and still I live in a constant state of shock, dismay and heartbreak. Since I left California, I don't meet any Palestinians, Arabs or Persians, but I simply can't help it. To think that in 2005 there was so much hope and in 2007, the hope began to quickly disappear makes my heart scream. I can't think of anything that would make the massacres worse, but learning of what could've been if not for Hamas and Israel, as it sounds, tears my soul apart. Thank you, Mariam and Al-Jazeera for this program. I'll look for the other episodes. Let it be a warning sign for any people in the world who elect a religious and radical regime, this is what happens, in their own words - the educated class runs away, countries don't want to do business with you, and the regime takes whatever it wants... it's really very tragic, Gaza could have been a great place, but most of the Gazans chose hate and destruction over peace and prosperity.

I predict that Israel has crossed So Many Lines that they will implode economically. They don't have the cheap labor of the Palestinians or the 300,000 Reserves who are fighting.
