Personal shield technology compared Dune Halo Mass Effect and Star Wars

I really wish that I could find a copy of the dark empire series. I've checked all of my local stores but no luck. Anybody know where I could find it?

Yeah it was definitely kinda derpy how they ended the series, really a shame for just how awesome the rest of the series was.

Eh, the bigger the ship, the more manpower required to guard it, and the harder it is to move troops around to key positions. The Eclipse II's death was the perfect example of why building ultra invincible super-dreadnoughts isn't a good idea, and fits very well with the franchise's theme of giant weapons being taken down in unconventional ways.

@@michaelramon2411, But still, realistically, the fight inside the ship would go on for at least a few hours depending on how many New Republic Soldiers there are inside the ship. It would've been enough time to mobilize enough Stormtroopers to kill the Rebels.

@@nixxel2278 The Republic isn't trying to take the bridge, or the barracks, or the reactor, or even the hangers. Their job is just to get far enough into the maintenance corridors to get a link to the hyperdrive computer. It would make sense for initial resistance to be light, after which the Republic forces could dig in and stall. Especially since there was a regular battle going on outside the ship. The destruction of the Eclipse II is basically the entire Empire/Rebellion conflict distilled down to a single battle.

It's not the Death Star II itself that was the problem so much as Palpatine's own arrogance in his planning involving it. He should have simply allowed the Death Star II to be fully completed and just start blowing away planets until the Rebels surrendered (or other fearful star systems collaborate to help catch them) since, had it been completed, the Death Star II would have been pretty much unstoppable to the Rebellions as all of weaknesses from the first one were corrected - 2 meter exhaust ports to countless millimeter wide ones across the whole surface, no faulty reactor flaw, having a much tighter anti-starfighter defense, super laser is more powerful and with a much faster charge time, and so on.

Probably that he wanted another death star 🤷‍♂️

HalfDemonInuyasha I can agree on that. Still the eclipse fleet would be much more flexible

lost comments Blowing up planets looks cool but it would be much more practical just to level cities with an eclipse star destroyer’s super laser, plus the ships can support fleets more efficiently than the Death Star can. Why blow up planets, when you can just subjugate the planet with an eclipse star destroyer and exploit the populous and resources while still maintaining fear.

Neither LOOKS bad, but Eclipse is a somewhat more practical warship for me.

The Supremacy, while not a bad ship, definitely comes off of much more as a rear vessel, providing long range bombardment and repairs as it's also essentially a moving ship yard with its enormous hangars and such. The Eclipse is far more front-line with its much heavier offensive power, and ridiculously thick armor and powerful shields, being able to ram through other capital ships without taking any damage even without its shields. The Supremacy, in spite of its size, still seems like a ship that could be taken down in conventional combat (albeit with difficulty) whereas both the Eclipse I and II were pretty much impossible to be taken down in a normal fashion and required very roundabout and special ways of destroying them.

@@Person-Lastname you have to admit he had a fairly good reason though first and foremost it was not complete the zann consortium was not a formal government and i believe would not have had the resources to complete its construction plus where would he finish it? kuat? not likely sullust? under rebel control. Fondor? under imperial control at this point (i think please correct me if im wrong.) hypori? not with out massive upgrades to its shipyards, most likely would be noticed as well if they tried that. effectively once everyone found out about the eclipse it probably would not have been hard to track it down again to destroy it or take it back. like zann said it presented a target even the rebels couldn't miss.

Not to mention the tactical and strategic flexibility of having multiple ships rather than one oversized space station. Not to mention the rather wasteful overkill of a planet killer when busting continents or even merely cities would do just as well. The SSDs speak to a more conventional fleet based military doctrine with heavy capital ships, vs the wasteful, inflexible, and easily destroyed super weapons of the Tarkin Doctrine. A Grand Fleet of dreadnoughts would definitely be the route I'd take as well. (Of course, that's probably still not up to par for killing Rebel scum, they're too elusive to smash with a sledgehammer of capital ships unfortunately. Unless a Death Star were used as a sacrificial bit of bait similar to the Endor scheme, but with the fleet being the genuine threat...)

The advantage of the Death Stars is that they're far more powerful and thus far more terrifying and demoralising to the average person. If an Eclipse fires on your planet, sure , it becomes uninhabitable, but you can still point to it and say "This was my home, this is what I fight for." If a Death Star fires on your planet, there's just an asteroid belt left behind.

You do realize being pointless is a battleship trait in general and a WWII battleship trait in particular? The Yamato-class stands out largely due to being the largest, but by the time they were built EVERY battleship wasn’t worth the expense. Carriers were far better at killing enemy surface units (while their range advantage made them virtually invulnerable to enemy guns), and smaller vessels could carry out AA, ASW and shore bombardment far more cost-effectively. Don’t get me wrong, the Yamatos had some issues as battleships (their radar systems could have been better, for example-they only had search radar and the IJN didn’t succeed wheN they tried to fit fire control radar onto them), and I wouldn’t consider them the best BBs. But it was the rise of naval aviation, rather than better BBs, that rendered them and every other BB useless.

Both Legends and Canon comics is pretty awesome.

Dark Empire for all its silliness and weird coloring does have some of the best ships and coolest locations in the series.

Harrowers take it. They launch strike craft at distance and split up. Their fighters handle the TIES then start interfering with PD fire while their bombers go for ISD shields. Meanwhile the harrowers have split up and are aiming to pincer- one above the ISD and one below. The one above dies to turbolasers but not before launching missiles at the ISD's unshielded bridge, the one below starts hammering the underside hangers and reactor dome. Remaining fighters and bombers start going for the ISD bridge. Between the assaults on the weaker underside and exposed bridge, ISD goes down.

@@vincediscombe7360 Are ther any stats that would confirm that Harrower's shield wouldn't stand a chance against ISD's main batteries, but ISD would stand a chance against Harrower's guns? Old republic era technology always appeared far more advanced to me.

​@@failedexperiment9073 I don't know, I gave them ton for ton parity because I've not seen otherwise- both seem fairly powerful in their own settings. Cba to trawl through spacebattles and find out tbh ;) I don't think 1 harrower could take an ISD1, they're like half the length and less than that in mass- though I think it'd be closer than one'd think. And ISD2 while a straight upgrade I still don't reckon is up to killing 2 harrowers, not with their massive fighter advantage.
