One of the first pieces of art I hung on a wall (in a livingroom with a lot of windows) ended up fading terribly over a year, teaching me a valuable lesson on lightfastness. Once I started selling some artwork I especially never wanted that disappointment to happen to someone who had supported my work. Ever since I've been testing all the supplies I use. I think Hydrus is the one of the only liquid watercolors that is lightfast, since so many others use dyes instead of pigments. All of my radiant Ph Martins dyes faded really quickly, but you can totally make lovely art with them for scanning for prints/online display. Though honestly, I regret that purchase because as dye inks go, they are extremely expensive for the small bottles. Any dye ink product made for fountain pens or ones for crafters like dylusions or distress ink sprays is the same type of dye product for much more reasonable prices per bottle. Thank you for sharing your results!!!

That's a great tip about using other dye-based products. I sometimes use inking tools that are just cheap stationary items (which I actually ended up doing here which may have defeated the purpose haha). I have had a similar fading incident with a piece I painted with W&N inks which I has just assumed were lightfast. I loved the bright pink (and an generally a fan on opera pinks) and have quickly realized that it is near impossible to get such a bright pink that will last unfortunately.

I think at this point for me it's pretty subconscious. There are SO many lightfast product in watercolor specifically that I don't see a reason to ever use the ones that aren't (as long as you've done a little research). However, you know that's coming from someone who doesn't use markers, inks, or the infamous opera, so take it for what you will 😁 This little bird is so cute, and thanks for sharing your lightfastness tests! I never got around to testing mine. Interesting about the brown!

Love the painting Jennifer and interesting to see your lightfast results as I have some of these watercolours and have never gotten round to doing it myself! I always like to use lightfast paints for commissions or where I plan on selling the original but for sketchbook art and practice pieces or where I plan on selling prints, I’m not as worried. Like you, I have a lot of art supplies so I try and save the lightfast paints for best and use up some others in between! Thanks for the video 😊

What Hydrus set did you use for the lightfast test (I love the pink/red on the bottom left corner) and what colors are you using here? Thank you this is a help topic. I am new to watercolor and totally obsessed! But I have been concerned about lightfastness. I did just buy 3 of the Dr Ph Martin's Radiant liquid watercolors because I love bright colors and they are AWESOME - but i do not want my artwork to fade. (Cute Quail!)

what type of paper do you use with the Dr Ph Martin water colors?

I have a question... I have these paints as well. I loved them, at first. However, if I let them sit for even a day or two then a lot of the pigment settles and sticks to the bottom or side of the bottle, depending on how they are sitting or laying in the box. And no amount of shaking will get it to mix back up. I even added two BB’s to the bottle and still can’t get all the of the pigment to mix up. Have you or anyone else had this issue? I have had them for too long to try to return them so I just use them for practice now. I just wondered if anyone else had the same issue? Your painting turned out beautifully! The pigment is heavier than what it is suspended in so it is natural for it to settle. A good shake for at least a few minutes should help it remix. It’s easy to think we have given things a good shake, but it may only have been for 20 to 30 seconds.

This naturally happens in tubes as well. Pigments separate, you just need to reconstitute them with a toothpick or some kind of surgical steel.
