Looking up the various portrayals of Byakhee, I am surprised that the artists behind Metroid had no stated inspiration from Lovecraft’s work, regarding Samus’ arch nemesis called Ridley. It has been stated that Metroid drew a lot of inspiration from the Alien movies, right down to Ridley having parts of his appearance modeled after a Xenomorph’s and being named after Ridley Scott. However, with Ridley also having a Pterosaur-like head, bat-like wings, draconic energy breath, and an ability to fly through the vacuum of space, he seems very much like a Byakhee too. Even some of the original concept art portrays Ridley with more insect-like features and a lamprey-like mouth, reminding me of the other Byakhee variations. There appears to be other possible Lovecraftian influences in the Metroid universe to begin with, such as the Leviathan Seeds acting like the meteor-carried eldritch abomination in The Colour Out of Space.

as a non-player of Metroid I was unaware of this. the elderly "R-Type" game from Japan has a lot of lovecraftian stuff though.

Thanks for the tip. I just looked up R-Type, and it seems like I game I would like to check out later down the road. Speaking of Lovecraft-influenced games, this Dark Souls-style RPG called “Bloodborne” developed by FromSoftware is another prominent example that I have played through.

@@markcobuzzi826 also note that if Metroid is taking ideas from Giger - well, Giger was taking ideas from Lovecraft (he named a book of his art Necronomicon - I own it), so Lovecraft seeps through to Metroid.

The Festival might be my favorite HLP story. The description of the creature in the story, I interpreted the creature as defying normal physics and the mind. Not that the creature could be actually represented as part bat, ant, human, etc. They are more like an ephemeral psychedelic hallucination embedded into reality. Now I've only read Lovecraft's stories in isolation; I'm not big into the extended ethos via unpublished writings and other authors, so take that in context. "a horde of tame, trained, hybrid winged things that no sound eye could ever wholly grasp, or sound brain ever wholly remember. They were not altogether crows, nor moles, nor buzzards, nor ants, nor vampire bats, nor decomposed human beings; but something I cannot and must not recall. They flopped limply along, half with their webbed feet and half with their membranous wings"

The wings could act as solar sails. Whatever that means.

The wings should emit a field derived from their abdomen that allows "steering"; even in space. A form of broadcast antenna, but for momentum manipulation.

Re: the wings - wouldn't it also make sense if these also were/contained some sensory organs - organs that help them navigate when travelling superluminally, but also to perceive when they're being conjured?

But how would they communicate how to summon a byaki, without knowing that there's someone there to communicate with

they post the spell in the Library of Celaeno, and teach it to other space faring species, like the Fungi from Yuggoth. Then those guys summon the byakhee, unwittingly giving them access to their worlds.

I thought of this too, and it also inspires questions about how spells are discovered in general. Do all species have to put their ad on a telephone pole initially to be summoned? Do monster species write their own summoning spells? What about binding spells? Why would a species ever advertize their own binding spells? If binding spells dont come from the target species, why is it necessary for summoning spells? Surely a summoning spell is a necessary precondition for binding spells. Anyway, I dont consider my thoughts a serious criticism, but the less detail about unknowable monster ecology the better in most cases, I think.

@@M4xPower my assumption is that since Lovecraftian "magic" is actually arcane science, those adept in the lore can actually craft their own rituals from scratch that will work. The same way that a nuclear physicist who is really interested in Deuterium can figure out a way to get it without needing someone else to teach him a spell.

Thank you for the video and the information therein. I’m running a game of Call of Cthulhu using the ‘Ties That Bind’ Module from Doors to Darkness, it should be a lot of fun and this video gave me some ideas.

@@sandypetersen6935 yeah I know, pretty gross. But in all seriousness. I'm wanting to implement byakhee into a game I'm making. How could humans kill them? It's set a few years from now (2030) so that the player can still realistically imagine them selves there.
@sandypetersen6935
@sandypetersen6935 3 жыл бұрын
@@ethanjoyce2810 in my roleplaying games byakhee aren't particularly hard to kill. I mean, they're harder to kill than a person, but you can just shoot them or blow them up. Their real threat comes from the fact that they show up unexpectedly from the sky, so they won't be at whatever you are using for defenses - instead they'll be "behind your lines" picking off easy prey. I imagine they'd act mostly like solitary predators, rather than an organized force. If they DID have some need to take out humanity, they could do it with a few kamikaze-byakhee ramming the planet at lightspeed I suppose.
