Thanks for the video. I’m in the middle of a eco tech 2.4 timing chain and balance chain replacement now. There is a lot of shade tree videos out there but yours was detailed and precise. I had the balance marks but could not see timing marks on the crank shaft gear. Once I saw your video where the mark was about 4:00 I discovered that there was a thin metal washer over the gear that his the timing mark. I pulled it off and sure enough there was a timing mark that it covered up. Now I’m confident I going the right direction. Thanks again, great video!

Hello,. I am changing a 2010 Chevy Equinox 2.4l Ecotec timing chain set and cylinder head. I was told that the VVT sprockets from the 2010 Chevy Ecotec LAF model engine have different set up points than the 2011 or newer Ecotec engines. Most videos online show the VVT sprockets being lined up so the marks are at 10 and 2 with the #1 cylinder at tdc on the compression stroke. On those videos the VVT Sprockets are both the same part #number and color(black). My engines timing chain kit from Cloyes has a white VVT sprocket and a black VVT sprocket and they are not interchangeable and have different part numbers. My question is do I follow the same procedure set up procedure as the newer engines(2011 and up) for my 2010 Equinox? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

I know this is off topic but was wondering if you could answer a Honda car question. I've got an HRV with around 70k miles on it. The dealership keeps asking me to do a 'fuel induction cleaning service'. Is that something that is just fluff for the service department to make money or really a good idea to have done? I've read mixed reviews on this topic. This might even be a good episode topic? You surely would have the knowledge with your Honda experience. Thanks for any insight 👍

Thanks for the question man. So, a byproduct of combustion is carbon, and the carbon can build up on the throttle plate and back of the valves. Depending on which engine you have, turbo or non turbo direct injection, cleaning that every so often isn't a bad idea. You can get a can of throttle body cleaner and take the air boot off, spray some of that on a rag and wipe it out fairly easy. Also, a ton of fuel additives are just kerosene and hardly do anything. However, Chevron Techron works. It's the same additive that's put into fuel at the refinery to help it clean valves and injectors. Adding that to your tank every 3 to 4 months or say 12k miles definitely does just as good as a dealers injection clean. Amsoil also makes something called "power foam" you can buy and gently spray in a vacuum line while the engine is running and it works fantastic. I spent my whole career in dealers, they, for the most part are all about the scare tactics of making money. Shoot me the year of your HRV and which engine you have and I'll look up how hard or easy it is to clean the throttle bore. Sticker on the bottom of the hood should tell the engine family.

I am doing a 2.2 ecotech, and when I removed the cam sprockets, both shafts rotated a little bit. How do I fix this? Your video was perfect! It allowed me to get the balancing on correctly. Thanks!
@PSBEadventures
@PSBEadventures 8 ай бұрын
Hey Michael, thanks for watching and reaching out. I believe in the video I talked about using screwdrivers gently inserted between the cam and head to hold them. There are, I believe, 21mm hex areas molded into the cams that you can use to rotate the cams gently. Don't turn them too far or forcefully just back to get them aligned. Best of luck to you

Possibly can replace the key and balancer or file it back into shape with a fine metal flat file

@1Gwhite Жыл бұрын
@@davidaston8029 you can actually get it out only after taking off both sprockets on the crank. Use a gear puller for those sprockets. Don’t bother trying to pry them off like I did.

I bought both kits for 2005 Sunfire. off of Amazon. They were in Cloyes boxes but they were made in CHINA!!!! I thought they were made in Arkansas. Have you seen some Cloyes made in China? .How you get the cam sprockets and balancer/crank pulley lined up? To get the bolt off of the crank, it moved a lot to the left. When you look straight on at the timing chains etc, does the crank pulley only turns to the right/clockwise? I know I can do this but I'm not sure if it's in the right spot before I take it apart. Thanks

How would you go about changing the hydraulic lifters? I wish I didn't have to remove the main chain.
@PSBEadventures
@PSBEadventures 10 ай бұрын
You can push the valve down with a couple screw drivers and get the rocker out, but I'm thinking the cams have to come out to get the lifter out
@JCGible

@PSBEadventures I've taken the timing chain cover off and will be using a cam sprocket retainer with a piece ill make to hold the sprockets up and tight. Then I'll remove the cam bolts and free the cam shaft. I've already made my marks on the chain links and cam shafts. Ill do one side at a time. 🙂 wish me luck.

@@JCGible were you able to do the lifters/lash adjusters?
@JCGible
@JCGible 9 ай бұрын
@HhHh-vi9bq I did. I ended up replacing them all with gm parts. I removed the timing chain cover and loosened the middle timing chain guide. I also removed the timing chain tensioner. I marked the sprockets and chains as well as the camshaft so I could make sure the timing stayed the same. I did one camshaft at a time. Starting with removing the vvt sprocket and then shaft caps. I separated the two carefully. I used some assembly grease, dryed the bolts, and torqued them down. I watch a few videos. Took my time. Kept everything clean. Thanks to all the people who shared their videos. 🙂 It is an involved type of job, so be prepared to take at least two or three days. A small piece of plywood and a floor jack is used to hold the engine up as you remove the passenger side motor mount. Best wishes to any DIY mechanic who chose to do this.

So I did my wife’s 2012 terrain 2.4L.. how do I know if I have it at TDC on the exhaust stroke and not the compression stroke?
@PSBEadventures
@PSBEadventures 6 ай бұрын
The position of the cams are the only thing that controls what stroke its on. The piston is simply up or down. If those marks all line up as we mention in the video that's all that matters. The sprockets are keyed to the cams so if you line up the marks, there is no way to get it wrong
@nextdoorpowerwashing8340

@@PSBEadventures my Manuel says time at TDC on the exhaust stroke. No the compression stroke.. I know that TDC is with #1 cylinder at TDC and the mark on the sprocket is at 12 and the marks on the cams are at 11 &2 … I’m just confused if there is such a thing as on the exhaust stroke
@PSBEadventures
@PSBEadventures 6 ай бұрын
@nextdoorpowerwashing8340 follow that video to the tee and sling that manual in the woods. Exhaust stroke just means the exhaust valves are open as the piston is traveling upwards. Don't over think it and follow that video. I wouldn't steer ya wrong man. I will say if you get it way out of whack, you'll want to be careful and not force anything. It doesn't take much to bend valves in this engine.

Hey! Thanks for the message. If you are referring to the colored chain links, then yes, that's 100% normal. You'd have to turn it maybe 100 times before it ever came back around or more.

@@PSBEadventures OK, thanks!! Is there a way to double check that it is properly timed after it is all back together? Or is it "set it and cross your fingers" type thing....Sorry, but I am ADHD type person that triple checks things before I feel good about everything..ha
@PSBEadventures
@PSBEadventures 9 ай бұрын
@noneyabiz8225 yeah, if you had the colored links correct, and the tensioner set, she's ready! Can't be wrong like that. If the crank key is at 12, the cam marks should be at 11 and 1 or so I think.

I had the same question!!!!! After installing my timing chain and double/triple checking all three timing marks it was good. However I've now rotated the engine multiple times to see if the timing marks would line back up with the links on the chain. It really had me worried thinking I messed up the timing. The engine rotates fine and there's no interference between the valves and pistons, I'm guessing the engine would hard stop if you were spinning it by hand and you'd feel it. @PSBEadventures Thanks for the video
