Ed Bickert "Just Squeeze Me" Solo In Depth. This is the first episode of a new series, Off The Record. In this video we examine parts of Ed Bickert's amazing solo on Just Squeeze Me, from Paul Desmond's classic 1975 recording, Pure Desmond. Guitarist Adam Smale demonstrates why his solo rocks by breaking down certain sections. The main focus of this video is to talk about how expertly well Ed Bickert improvises both a solo line AND chords simultaneously.

❇️✅ GET ED'S FULL SOLO ON "JUST SQUEEZE ME" HERE ▶︎ jazz-rocks-shop.myshopify.com...
It's no doubt Ed was a master at incorporating perfectly placed chords that sounded beautiful and voice-led them in a jaw-dropping smooth way. Even though this lesson talks more about the chordal approach, Adam is making the whole solo transcription available as well. (Link above) A PDF lesson is also available that helps you understand and practice the amazing sections of Ed's solo talked about in the video. The link for that is below as well.

Ed claimed in interviews that most of his chord magic (the voicings, the voice leading, all of it) was worked out by ear, intuitively, over the years. On the other hand, from the late 1950s to the early 1970s, he was surrounded on a daily basis by formally trained musicians, playing commercial studio jobs and in Rob McConnell's Boss Brass--so it's possible he was talking shop, harmonically speaking, here and there with arrangers and fellow musicians. But it's also possible he was just one of those musicians like Erroll Garner, Chet Baker, and Django Reinhardt, with amazing ears and no real need to name the sounds he was hearing in his mind and playing. The guy grew up on a chicken farm in the Okanagan Valley (rural British Columbia)--and he never went to music school or even took guitar lessons for any significant amount of time. It's really amazing to think about the career he had, and the aesthetic he developed on guitar, coming from that background. He loved the blues, he loved the impressionistic and slightly dissonant chord sounds of pianists like Bill Evans...and the sum of his musical training growing was basically playing square dance music with his parents for fellow farmers.

Wow! Thanks for the in-depth and thoughtful comment, Jim. According to Lorne Lofsky when I interviewed him ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fN6Ync-p3dHadYk.html ) Ed suggested he study with the same guy he did and I gather it was for several years. I ask Lorne this same question: who started playing in a “pianistic” way first, Ed or Lenny Breau? Do you have any thoughts or insights on that?

Had long been a Desmond fan and picked this album up when it came out. Didn't know Bickert, but it was Desmond with Ron Carter and Connie Kay, so...as soon as I heard Bickert, I was hooked. Played the album several times before I was able to give it a listen to focus on the rest of the group. Thanks for sharing.

@@JazzRockswithAdam : I just bought the $10 Ed Bickert lesson. As a retiree, that’s all I can afford at the moment. I wanted to make the connection and commit to working on the tune over this winter. Now I pulled the trigger and have made the commitment. Sad about Pat Martino, eh? I blacked out and was hospitalized on Wednesday before Halloween with (possibly) COVID-19. I released myself 3 days later when I returned to consciousness. I arrived home to the sad news of Martino’s death about a week ago. So sad to hear! Your lesson impressed me both as a guitarist and as a teacher! Well done! I am now committed to learning this tune over the winter.

I discovered Ed around 1988 when he played in Stratford with Moe Koffman, Kieran Overs and Barry Elms, at Knox Presbyterian Church. Ed was first to come on stage and I didn’t know him - I thought “who is this ‘fossil?’”- he looked older than his years. When he started to play I was just blown away and that Summer I followed him to a couple of other venues where he played, including the McMichael Gallery in Kleinberg, Ontario. I’ve been a huge fan ever since. I’m glad I discovered this video.

While Barry Harris was great, studying him is not the key to undestanding Ed's comping. Listening to, transcring and analyzing his playing behind melodies and solos is the secret. His harmonies, voice leadimg, rhythms and use of dynamics are a mastrrclass in comping and always so tasteful. In my book he was the ideal jazz acompamist!
