In a departure from the string of polished pop hits that made Ed Sheeran one of the world's bestselling music artists, his new album, "Subtract," is a stripped-down return to his singer-songwriter roots. The unassuming superstar talks with correspondent Seth Doane about how his latest music is very much a reflection of recent times, filled with personal challenges, loss, mental health struggles, and controversy. He also discusses the recent lawsuit accusing him of plagiarism (which a jury this past week rejected).

I was pleased to hear him admit as young man that he has dealt with bulimia. I am a much older man now and no longer deal with bulimia, but when I was Ed's age I felt so alone and so isolated. I was embarrassed due to eating disorders being a 'female' issue supposedly. I still have never told many people, even therapists, about this time in my life. I appreciate him being public about this condition. Thanks Ed. You most likely are helping other young men know they are not alone.

My father died at age 86 in 2019. He was always very thin 120 LBS. I always weighed at least twice what he did. The family ½ joked that he was anorexic. About 6 months before he died I saw a doctor’s report on my father and there it was in Black & White, Anorexic. He was married to a woman who was also very thing and bulimic along with my ½ sister. They were all going to the dentists frequently because of all of the damage they had done to their teeth. It is weird. I just never thought my father could be anorexic because I thought of it as a woman’s disease.

My heart goes out to Ed Sheeran, his wife and children. A cancer diagnosis is hard enough without it being public knowledge. I remember after my husband was diagnosed, telling people made it more real. Still appreciate that he writes about REAL things. Loss as well, so sorry for his grief in the loss of his dear friend. To me important too, because my best friend, my soulmate, my husband did not survive cancer. His songs touch your soul!

I blame the Marvin Gaye family for starting this fight with Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.” They have created self-censorship and a litigious atmosphere in pop music because of their greed and sense of self-importance. They have absolutely ruined what was great about pop music and caused it to be only further filled with mediocre, disposable subpar product.

I like both artists and I think new musicians could admit their influences once they learn of similar tracks previously recorded. Perhaps if Ed Sheeran and Robin Thicke had given Marvin Gaye's estate an acknowledging nod and an appreciative offer regarding both Blurred Lines and Thinking Out Loud, this whole situation may have been able to have been resolved internally. The influences are crystal clear.

Everyone keeps focusing on the chord progression like its the only element to consider. Not only did he have nearly the same chord progression (2nd chord is a common variation) he had the same tempo, timing, nearly identical key, and very similar production elements. Like a sample. I think it was deliberate but not the legal criteria for infringement. Change the melody.....take out the blue notes and add your own lyrics.
@400_billion_suns
@400_billion_suns Жыл бұрын
“Nearly identical key?” A song is either in the same key or it isn’t. It can’t be “nearly identical.” As for the rest, that’s called “genre.” Musical genres exist *because* of derivative similarity within that genre. Without that, there would be no such thing as genres, and we’d have 1 pop song, 1 R&B song, 1 soul song, 1 hip hop song, 1 rock song, 1 new wave song…

Too much use of I, V, vi and IV chords. Every time I hear the first three I know what's coming next so I switch off immediately. Soundtrack to a dairy farm. Sorry, but "-" is toothless. You would think that, an artist who is in the great and fortunate nothing-to-lose position, would take more chances, and really subtract the instrumentation, akin to the sparseness and vulnerability of Johnny Cash's American series, or Taylor Swift's folklore and evermore records. But he sticks to formulaic music that feels data driven and sounds like it came out of a focus group: it lacks heart, despite the best of intentions. I suppose all the blame can't rest of Sheeran - he is on a big label, after all, whose executives are surely risk-averse - but, still, the album could have done with a bigger stamp of producer Aaron Dessner. Subtract, sadly, is a paint-by-numbers missed opportunity.
