This is part 2 of a 15 minute recording of Eddie Van Halen jamming alone. This was probably recorded during a full-stage rehearsal for the 1984 tour, but could have been recorded in the 5150 studio in 1983. SOUNDBOARD! Never on KZfaq until now!

Top of the World was originally written for 1984, but never finished. Eddie took it out of the mothballs and Sammy wrote the lyrics for it for F.U.C.K. Not uncommon, especially for VH who overcut every album in those days. For example, Hang 'Em High appeared on Diver Down, but the original version of that song, then titled Last Night, was recorded on their original studio demo in '77. How many song on A Different Kind of Truth do you think are new? I'll tell you - not one. Every track on that album was at least 30 years old - most were songs which were cut from the first 6 albums. The rest were songs which were written but never finished from that same time period.

As much as I love Eddie, it's actually refreshing to hear him straight up jam without having to noddle around with Eruption over and over again. Wish he did this with his live solos more often. He's gotta be sick of that solo.

The "guitarman" CD was mostly bogus, because the majority of the tracks were actually from a guitar instructional tape by Curt Mitchell. This gem, however, was tacked on to the end. And yes, it's real Eddie.

Yep... In fact this is what he sounded like for those early years but he never touches any riff newer than 1984. I saw VH 82, 83 and in 1984 we went with a rich girl and her best friend in a limo for her birthday. I swear.. every opening was EVH standing in a cloud of fog playing just like this and transitioning to unchained

@soulful terrain , Ed picks with his thumb and middle finger,uses his forefinger to sabilize the pick on faster picking passes usually. I noticed this in the early 80`s and ,of course copied him,and now that is the only way I can hold the pick!!! LOL! I am about as wacky as Ed , but have about 1/4 of the talent.

All the negative comment have got to be from young people that just don't understand the guitar environment of that time (80's). And they seem ignorant of music history, and therefore impossible to appreciate and admire. They're flooded with all the highly technical and super amazing players. Well all these current players' music all root to the master, Eddie Van Halen.

i remember this from the "guitarman" boot cd from the 90's. that said this was eddie jamming at 5150 and was a small section that was taken from hours and hours of a recording. who knows but it is from 1983 or 1984 sometime

It's awesome to hear some of these ideas in their infancy prior to making it onto an album. You can tell distinctly which parts he sort of reeled in or dialed back a bit to fit more within the context or structure of an actual song (like that House of Pain riff - such a killer piece of guitar work). It's unfair to label him a shredder. He was more of a virtuoso than he ever got credit for. Pure musician, plain and simple.

@Schecter725 I hear a mix of past and present... :16 strikes my ear as nothing other than EVH soul you're hearing... the experiments at 1:13, 1:50, and 4:00 to 4:13 evolved into 'Get Up'... :31 through 1:04 is all 'House Of Pain'... 1:35 to 1:41 is a failed request for feedback (his guitar wouldn't give him what he wanted)... 1:54 to 2:13 is {amazingly} 'Top Of The World', 2:48 to 2:52 is 'Spanish Fly'... 3:09 to 3:11 reminds me of the intro to 'Mean Street'...
@RScott413

If you ever get your processor setup to emulate EVH you will go down a rabbit hole of trying to play old VH and hopefully be able to save it. Back in the 80s we had to use a flanger, open it up and start monkeying with it in addition going heavy on the bass tone. In my case it looked messy and sounded even more messy. It took years to learn 2 songs that were still not perfect by any means. When EVH is just messing around it is like 20x better than any other's recording play.

89-91?! Sorry, man. 100% wrong. This is Eddie pre-Sammy. That's not a Peavey 5150. I own one. I know what they sound like. This is pure Marshall goodness and the screaming upper registers are instantly recognizable in that 82-84 live tone he used. Another way to tell...do you hear ANY neck pickup? And, do you hear him rehearsing ANY Van Hagar riffs or licks? This sounds nothing Van Hagar tone. This is Dave-era. I bet my EVH-played Ernie Ball and 5150 amp on it.
