@@DG-rd8zh The pentatonic "has the best notes" correct me if I'm wrong, there's the 6 note scale, and the 7 note scale, but none rock like the pentatonic. Just my humble opinion. But yeah, I love the blues scale and the diatonic scale too, and the chromatic is a piece of work too just a little harder to deal with. Your comment is spot on it's mostly Em pentatonic on the Free Bird solo.

Other amazing solos: hotel california, the trooper, hallowed be thy name, master of puppets (starting with the slow harmonized part), another brick in the wall and if you include short but emotional solos, "I could have lied" by is perhaps the most emotional solo I've ever heard despite it being so short, it definitely is a strong part of that album and an honest flush of emotions for John Frusciante

One vote about the missing solos: Mark Knopfler in Sultans of Swing, David Gilmour in Division Bell, Jethro Tull's Martin Barre in We used to know (as a predecessor and obvious inspiration of Hotel California) and Wishbone Ash's Vallediction. And for sure metal bands fans would add even more.

The vibrant melodies of the 1980s continue to echo through time, painting a vivid portrait of an era where music thrived, and iconic figures emerged as beacons of creativity and innovation. Eddie Van Halen, a virtuoso of the guitar, didn't just strum strings; he orchestrated a symphony of rock melodies that ignited passion and energy. His pioneering "tapping" technique wasn't merely a skill; it was a seismic shift in the realm of guitar playing, a revolution that resonates through the corridors of rock history. Prince, the enigmatic maestro, defied musical norms, blending genres to craft a sonic universe that transcended boundaries. His songs weren't just compositions; they were anthems of freedom, calling out to a generation hungry for musical exploration and expression. David Bowie, the ever-evolving artistic luminary, didn't just change personas; he embodied artistic liberation. Each character he created wasn’t just a costume; it was a testament to his boundless creativity and his ability to redefine the very essence of artistic expression. George Michael, with his soulful voice and emotionally resonant lyrics, crafted melodies that served as a heartbeat for an entire era. His tunes weren't just melodies; they were emotional journeys, capturing the essence of love, heartache, and the human experience. Elton John, the piano virtuoso, didn’t just play keys; he painted emotional landscapes with every chord. His ballads weren't just songs; they were emotive journeys, weaving tales of love, loss, and resilience that resonated with audiences across generations. Tina Turner's electrifying stage presence wasn't just a performance; it was an anthem of empowerment and strength. Her music wasn't just sound; it was a rallying cry, inspiring listeners to embrace their inner power and resilience. Lionel Richie, the balladeer extraordinaire, crafted tunes that echoed universal emotions. His melodies weren't just compositions; they were emotional soundscapes, capturing the essence of human connections and heartfelt emotions. These '80s icons weren’t just musical luminaries; they were pioneers who sculpted a sonic landscape that transcended time. Their influence isn't merely confined to the past; it reverberates through the present, guiding and inspiring artists in their quest for musical excellence and emotional resonance. Their impact extended beyond their melodies, shaping fashion, culture, and societal norms. Prince's flamboyant style challenged gender norms, while David Bowie's shape-shifting personas sparked conversations about identity and self-expression. These artists weren’t just musicians; they were cultural catalysts, trailblazing paths that inspired generations beyond their time. The '80s, a decade infused with exuberance and innovation, birthed an era of music that didn't just entertain but also moved souls. Each chord struck a chord within the hearts of listeners, resonating with emotions and experiences that formed the very fabric of their lives. Their influence spanned genres, transcending the limitations of labels. Prince’s fusion of funk and rock, David Bowie’s genre-defying experimentation, and George Michael’s heartfelt ballads-all contributed to a musical landscape rich in diversity and depth. As the '80s icons graced stages and airwaves, their performances weren't just concerts; they were experiences-an emotional journey through sonic landscapes that left an indelible imprint on the memories of those fortunate enough to witness them. Their legacy endures not just in the music but in the emotions evoked by their melodies. The longing for an era where music wasn’t just an auditory experience but a profound emotional journey remains palpable. These icons, with their artistry and innovation, etched themselves into the annals of music history, leaving a timeless legacy that continues to inspire and resonate with music lovers across generations.

I absolutely like his playing the double neck electric guitar... My greatest rock music influence who even forced me to pick up my own electric guitar to resonate with him! Good luck! Lots of love to Russia!

Darn - no Eddie Van Halen - such a legend who paved the way for some of the coolest modern rock and roll solo's and rifts of all time. Then again I am sure the world could easily add another 20 candidates for the greatest solos of all time. Boston, Scorpions, AC/DC, Dire Straits, Blue Oyster Cult, ZZ Top, Metallica, and oh my gosh so many more.

+iliadde Keef didn't solo much, and that was never his strength, he's a rhythm guy. The most famous Stones solos are Taylor's. But that's the thing with lists like this, I would have liked to see Townsend on here (the intro to Eminence Front comes to mind), and there are so many others that could be added... but it's not like the solos on here aren't worthy right? The rest is down to taste, so I don't see where you're coming from.

Comfortably Numb, Stairway to Heaven and Sultans of Swing are in my opinions the three greatest guitar solos of all-time (I'd put them in that order or maybe swap Sultans and Stairway because come on, it's COMFORTABLY NUMB). So sad Sultans of Swing wasn't mentioned. This being said, and while I'm not a big Guns N' Roses fan, the solos in November Rain and especially in Sweet Child O'Mine are absolutely wonderful.

I don't agree, Angus, for sure has the gift of never being "aside" what he does, everything is perfectly placed and timed... but coming to soloing... he sure has no flaw, but to be honest, I just can't think about an AC/DC solo I consider memorable, the strenght of AC/DC is the overall balance and energy of all elements, but, I'm into Metal/Hard Rock since my childhood, moslty because I like cool soloing, and when it comes to solos, AC/DC isn't a band that comes to my mind... while I wouldn't have to think more than 20 seconds to think about dozens of solos from Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Pink Floyd, Queen, ManOwaR, Mercyful Fate and many more...

Clapton's two solos on Crossroads on "Wheels of Fire" are a milestone for me. There may have been great electric guitar solos done before then. But this relatively short song recorded live introduced the style to which all later rock guitarists owe a debt. Searing tone, crystal-clear notes, speed where necessary and proof that a solo doesn't have to be long to be memorable. Sitting On Top of the World" from "Goodbye" is an equally-good studio recorded song that proves the same thing.

Have seen all of these bands multiple times in their Hayday. I doubted we would agree. I am pleasantly surprised and shocked that 7 of your picks would have been on my list. (though I prefer Jimmy Page's solo on Since I've Been Loving You). My three substitutes would have been: one of many choices from Pete Townsend, Steely Dan, and Duane Allman. (Maybe Frampton). Overall, a commendable, thoughtful list from a long-term rocker who is still current.

If you want to see lightning fast fingers check out Ayu Gusfanz. She (yes, she) is still young too. "Kamulyan" is a good one to look at. As fast as she plays in the first section, she doubles the speed in the reprise. I used to love Ten Years After, too. I'd love to change the world...

I agree with a lot of this! God That Failed is still debatable as Metallica's (or Kirk's) best, but it's either the best or equal with others.

The most popular riffs that inspired the early 70's, and eventually created heavy metal are "you really got me", "hey joe", "born to be wild", and "smoke on the water". Listen carefully to any heavy metal song and you will understand these influences. Don't be a smartass. Be a wise man...

Agree with number one full heartily. Can not express enough how the Comfortably Numb solo somehow transcends normal guitar solos. It's a life changing 2 minutes of music

You could add everyone who hasn't been mentioned including Prince, but Dave Gilmour and Comfortably Numb beats any other solo by a mile. It will stand as a masterpiece for decades to come. Secondly, a bit miffed that Hank Marvin isn't in the list.
