Hi everyone. Just a shorter video for you this week (you can always watch it twice if you want 10 minutes…) about a super-simple little jig I’ve used for years to trim back softwood edging or lipping on shelves. Enjoy!

That’s the beauty of hanging onto old tools (if they work) - setting them up for dedicated functions. I put my old Black and Decker drill (40 years old and on its 3rd set of brushes) in a B &D drill stand - bloody really useful not having to set up and take down.

Great idea. I have been using this tip for a few years now and don't use a fence and never had a problem. There's a handle on the opposite end of the jig which helps. I also found that it is not a good idea to plunge the router all the way, especially using a veneered board. I found out the hard way with some expensive oak veneered stuff. Keep up the great videos & tips Peter.

Good trick to have up our sleeves. I'd probably drop a nice weight on the base plate extension / plywood you're using. keeps the routers center of weight further towards the supported part of the shelf.

Peter I have that exact router, and the guide, everything it comes with. I have to say it does the business, has a soft start, good adjustment, good power and was a good price at the time. Cant fault it. Dont think they do that brand anymore (shame). Good to see in your vid though as it will (with a good bit) do just as well as something 10 times the price, and you can make all sorts of jigs to fit on the base. great stuff and thanks. Alan

Take a strip of same plywood, together with a strip of material same thickness as the shelf, fix it to the other two bolt holes, and you have full support on both sides. As i understand, even with side guide, there's still a chance of tipping

Hi Peter Saw this one a bit late (have only just started to watch your channel) but like it a lot. I would be happy to use the gear without a fence if there was a knob on the inboard side of the mounting panel. This should give adequate control over the router operation. I will make mine with one so even with a fence it will be easy to control. John

I was told that a playing card is 0.3mm. I've never checked but I do keep a pack of cards along with other shims. If you wanted to make the jig more complicated (and get over the missing fence problem) you could put an adjustable fence along the back of the plate - just trying to keep you busy ;-) Oh yes, you could make it micro-adjustable!
@FritsvanDoorn
@FritsvanDoorn 6 жыл бұрын
I am sure that a craftsman like you can make a new fence for the router? Or if you put a thinner piece of ply between the router and the ply already fitted, and make it go past the other side, you can make some kind of fancy fence also. I am looking forward to see how you will do it. All in all I think it is a great idea. Thanks for sharing!

@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 6 жыл бұрын
Most routers come with a side fence, I just couldn't find mine, but sure, you could make one. Actually, in use it turns out you can easily ride the edge of the plywood base against the inside lip of the edging, but a fence is def. the safest way to go about it. 👍

This is typically the kind of job where i pick up a handplane. It goes faster, i'd probably be finished in less time that it would take just to set up the plonge depth of the router. More control and no risque of ruining everything if i slightly tip over. No noise, do dust, almost no risque of sever injury. The finish surface is perfect right out of the plane, actually better than a finely sanded surface , so yet again no dust, and overall even faster. The tool can be as cheap as 15€ (I recently tryed those small japanese plane on amazon, they work like charm for this kind of application). Bonus it does chamfer and round over as well with the same tool. I really don't see why would someone want to use router for that ? Just try it out, get yourself a decent handplane with a nice blade and try out. Just my 2cts...
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 5 жыл бұрын
I use a router because it's quick and easy; I typically have ~20 or so to do at a time, and a hand plane (yes, I have a few, thanks) was taking too long. Also I think you may have missed the point a little; once the router is set, you don't change anything - I can pull it off my shelf and trim 20 shelves in no time. 👍

@10MinuteWorkshop 5 жыл бұрын
I hadn’t thought of it tbh Mike - I’ll give it a try the next time I use it, thanks. It doesn’t feel unbalanced in use, though it could probably do with a handle or knob on the left-hand side, at least 👍👍
@mikekeogh
@mikekeogh 5 жыл бұрын
As you can tell by the comment in the tidy up video this is something I'm researching at the moment. I've seen plenty of jigs with knobs/handles but they always need some positive input from the user. I was just thinking on your particular jig a counter weight could balance the whole unit out and stop the tendency to tip into the edging if you took your eye of the ball for a second.

How about hot melt glue a small block on face of router to limit the width of cut.... it would act as a micro fence? Thanks too for the videos.... Have figured out the woodworking algorithm for increasing subscribers on KZfaq!!!! Make videos of: 1. Workshop equipment (planer stand, router table, workbench etc) like everyone with less than 150k subscribers who are trying to eke out a living. 2. Get bored off the relentless tedium of producing content like many. 3. Small projects (spice rack, shoe caddy, toilet roll holder) 4. Get bigger workshop like Matthias and Jimmy Diresta and...there were a few lucky English chaps like Matt Eastlea. 5. Get really bored with bigger workshop and develop wan musings about “good old workshop” like Matthias Wendell. 6. Bigger projects like credenzas, complete hand-planed commercial kitchens, wooden house only using Japanese or Korean joinery like Chickadee. 7. Quit doing weekly videos like Steve Ramsay and start online woodworking courses or change “how” you produce content so as to maintain subscriber volume like Jimmy Diresta (called keeping the money and run differently!) So it seems like the magical subscription number is in the 190k - 450k range. Any bigger and it’s too hard to manage for a single person. Jimmy Diresta has always had a separate camera person and in addition I think his daughter handles all the backroom stuff. And there have been a few spectacular failures in trying to transition to bigger numbers and having staff/family handle backroom work like the Italian super-gifted maker/cinematographer/pilot/entrepreneur Giaco Whatever.... Apart from the smart-aleck remarks I wish you well in finding the balance between possible and the probable whilst not increasing your work effort to make LESS money....! Your format is excellent, presentation is great and honesty very useful. Thanks again and greetings from the south western corner of Australia!
