In this video, I share how to edit and prepare field recordings to use as sound effects in your projects.
Recording your own sound effects is an integral part of being a sound designer. You can learn so much about sound design by going through the process of recording, editing, and designing your own sound sources.
Recently, my family and I took a week off and went to a family friend's farm for a week. During that time I was able to capture cool sounds including animal recordings, ambiences, among other farm sounds.
In this video, I'll be showing you how I go about editing all these different sound sources so they are ready to use in future projects.

I didn’t know that there is something like compile view In RX - would save me a lot of time and work. Thanks for this David

Cool to see how you edit out unwanted sound. I’m planning a hiking video. I want to capture lavalier voice which is relatively easy to get without foot stepping sound. I also want to get ambient nature sounds from a binaural or stereo mics and field recorder. Is there a way to edit in post to remove the foot stepping sound and still retain distant birds chirping and other nature sounds.

Thanks David! Just yesterday I was wondering how to cut and merge sections of an item in Rx. It seems like this type of editing is still better in the DAW.

Nice video! Is your studio mic an SM57? I just purchased two of those Shure wind screens. One for my SM57 and one for my AT875R. Looking forward to testing both mics in tandem as studio options.

Would I be able to do this with RX 10 Elements? I'm hoping not to have to buy the Standard version. The video is very helpful, thanks.

no. I'm pretty sure you need the standard version.

Just a question; You can use RX inside Reaper, Is there a reason you are using it as a stand-alone program and not inside Reaper while editing and preping the files? I'm a little loss as to why the extra step is needed.

Not sure what you mean by using it inside Reaper. You can use certain modules as plugins, but I still prefer the RX editor to see the spectrogram. You can add RX as an external editor, but whatever edits you make are destructive edits and you can’t undo edits. I don’t like that.

how did you compress the recordings within RX, i dont see a compressor there? Also, do you think its best to have each individual hit as a seperate file or do you also do a collection of multiple sounds within one file? Thanks for the video, really amazing how much effort you put into it again! Helps a lot

I have the same question regarding the compression. Unless he's using the plugin option, assigned to a hot key.

Yea, sorry I should have specified that. I was using the plugin module and loaded in a compressor. I do sometimes have multiple takes in one file, but in general, I do separate files for each take.

Do you use Nuendo 12 anymore? I started using Nuendo and now moving over to Reaper because it’s so much fast to design sounds.
