In this special extended episode I’ll show you how you can edit quickly using the Cut page in the FREE version of DaVinci Resolve 18.
Starting from creating a project and importing your media, through using the Source Tape effectively and building your edit, to adjusting audio levels, adding titles and using effects.
Whether you are working on a Mac, PC, Linux or iPad, there are TONNES of tips for using the Cut page effectively in this complete lesson!

The sequences are sort of in time with the tempo of the music i.e. the clip changes 'approximately' every two bars which really enhances the timeline or adds an upbeat vibe overall. Of course adding the music was like the icing on the cake but to have the clips change to nearly every two bars... lifted it so much more. I did hear you suggest such during the video. As a new DR user, this is a super cool workflow, Chris. Thank you so much for sharing 🌳🦌🚴‍♀

From a newbie who did a few online tutorials, this is brilliant! Great use and explanation of the source tape, switching and how to do quick trim with various methods. I don't want to clumsily edit using my old bad habit from Vegas. This is very helpful in developing good edit habit and a must watch for newbies to resolve!

You're a great teacher and this is what I needed... switching from Premier Pro to DR and I wasn't that good at PP to start with so this is just the level I need to get me going again in DR. I can't believe you don't have more subscribers.... get ready for them, they will come with this quality of content! Do you recommend changing the keyboard short cut keys to something that makes more sense to a person or leaving them for convenience and compatibility of the folks teaching online?

Thank you for this comment! 😊 I recommend you use the default Resolve keyboard, especially when learning. Not all shortcuts will remap directly from your existing software and I usually find most people encounter problems at some point. Keeping the default as a base plays to the strengths of the software you're using rather than trying to force it to operate as something else. HTH.

Cut page behaves much like the time line in FCP, ( obviously there are major differences too) but as opposed to the edit page, I find it easier to browse through and assemble a sequence from camera quickly. I can then switch to the edit page to develop the edit further.

I find the timeline in the Cut page behaves in a very simplistic manner... Maybe that's because I'm used to a more flexible timeline. But for assembling, as you say, I think the Cut page has a lot to offer. Thanks for commenting!

Yes - Cut page is simplistic and so is FCP which I have used for years and that really is the beauty of both. When I am assembling and ordering story elements I don't need all the fiddly bits offered in the edit page, I just want to get the large pieces of story in a working order and for this the cut page, and cut page with a speed editor works the best for me.@@Chris.Roberts

Thanks for this Chris. I've avoided using the Cut page until now as the Edit page was so familiar from when I used other LNE's, but I shall definitely have a go with it on my next project. I find your tutorials to be the most perfectly paced of any I have watched since moving over to DaVinci Resolve, with a lot of information conveyed without rushing or dragging. And not a single "Hey Wassup guys!" Ha ha. The only other trainers that come close are Mark and Steve at Ripple Training, who I watched a lot when I was using FCPX, but I prefer yours for your greater depth of understanding of DVR - and maybe because I'm British! I've watched and edited along with all your videos now, so can't wait for the next one. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for your help. I wondered what the point of the cut page was. I see how it can be of use in a workflow. It doesn't help me when I am creating a music video because I have to choose my clips based on the music which I find much easier to do in the edit page. I just color graded my first video (Blue Danube) and I was surprised at how intuitive the color page was to use. I'm not surprised that it is the industry standard for color. Your training videos that I've been doing from Black Magic's website have helped me get up and running in a month's time. Completely new to this industry. Thanks again.

I hope you can help me with a challenge that I have been trying to sort out for a while now. In the source tape view I want to see footage from multiple cameras in a sequential order regardless of camera type, however I want the order to be set based upon the time of day that it was shot. I am shooting using a GoPro, iPhone and a drone. What happens now is that’s the footage if the iPhone must be view on date modified and the camera type is how they are grouped, then in chronological order. My goal is to use the source tape to cut down a string out very quickly without having to identify footage from different cameras and then place it manually within the timeline. Any ideas how I should approach this?

Hi there! This should be perfectly possible provided that all your cameras have the correct date and time set. Your iPhone should have this done already, but it's worth checking your GoPro and drone. Then you can import all the footage and in the Media Pool in the Cut page, select the Sort menu to "Date Time" and "Ascending". This should now list all your clips starting at the earliest date, irrespective of which camera they were captured with. When you open the Source Tape, this will be the order the clips are displayed. This needs to be my workflow! So I've really taken my time, 4 days now, working through your excellent examples. I would appreciate your help at 28:30, the Freeze Frame, when you click the Inspector snowflake, what actually happened to the clip? I'm thinking Resolve replaced everything beyond the playhead with copies of the frozen frame because I didn't see the clip change length. So Freeze Frame didn't add or delete any frames, it simply converted all remaining frames to the end of the clip into copies of the frozen frame? And then you trimmed it out about another 2 seconds. And, please, one more... at 26:00, PIP, you said, "...notice when I do this is how the timeline automatically adjusts in order to be able to display all of those tracks together in the lower timeline." I tried to notice but all I saw was BOTH timelines show the raised clip above the close-up clip and a gap occur where the clip used to be. Just the same as what I always see on the Edit page in that situation. What am I missing from your comment? Thanks for your hard work in putting this video together- I finally understand the benefits of the Cut page!

Hey! So good to hear you're finding this useful for your workflow... 😁 Regarding the freeze frame, yes, you're perfectly correct. Clicking the "snowflake" button simply adds the frame under the playhead as a still for the remaining duration of the clip. It's simple and I use it a lot in my KZfaq videos. Once you have the freeze frame in the timeline you can trim it like any other still or graphic clip. For the PIP example, I'm referring to the track heights in the lower detail timeline, not the overall duration of the timeline... When you're working with clips on multiple tracks in the Edit page, you may have to manually adjust the height of the tracks (depending on your screen size of course) in order to display all those clips comfortably. The Cut page though resizes the track/clip heights automatically to fit the size of the lower timeline so you always see the clips on the upper tracks. If you want to see them bigger/smaller then you simply drag the Resize Timeline control (the three lines under the audio meters as at 4:00). It may seem like a minor thing, but actually we do tend to spend a lot of time readjusting the timeline on the Edit page, so this sort of thing is one of the ways in which the Cut page helps speed up the editing process. Thank you for the great video Chris, which is miles ahead of others on this subject I have seen. One question: I have seen on other videos a magnet icon for snapping to the left of the timeline on the cut page. I only have Ripple, Scissors and Marker. Clicking the Timeline options icon shows that Snap is on. The shortcut n turns snapping on and off but there is no indication that I can see on the cut page. Am I missing something? G'day! Great to hear you found the video useful... You're not missing anything at all. The other videos you've seen are probably just using a slightly older version of Resolve. My video was recorded just under 6 months ago, so is using some interface tweaks that were introduced around 18.5 when the Snap icon was moved to the menu. Shame because I don't think there's any other indication of snapping in the Cut page otherwise (unless you see it when trimming or adding clips in the timeline). HTH!

Is it possible to open on clip in the cut page and then by using in and out points create multiple clips? Scenario: I recorded new intro and outro messages for a series of older videos. There are nine of these older videos. I recorded the new intros and outros in one take so now I have one large clip for all the new into and outros. My plan was to then cut up the one take into intro and outro sections and them import them as needed into each project for each individual video. I was wondering if the was an ‘elegant’ way to do this from the cut page? Thanks

Hi. What you're wanting to do *is* possible, but not in a straightforward way... Remember, Resolve never actually "cuts" your original source clips... To achieve what you're describing you'd need to add edits to the intro/outro file where you want to use the different clips... You could then use the Media Management or Deliver page to create separate media files for each of these takes... You'd then be able to import each of these clips separately into your other projects. As you can see, it's a bit long-winded and not very intuitive. Alternatively you could use *subclips* to divide the long clip up into smaller, manageable clips and *Power Bins* for accessing these subclips in different projects. However, neither of these functions are available directly in the Cut page... Sometimes, whilst it might not be the most efficient method, the more straightforward approach of importing the original file into each project and edit just the parts you need might be the easier option in this case... HTH!!!

Actually... you *can* create subclips in the Cut page... Set the in and out points and choose Mark > Create Subclip... But that's only part of the workflow of course... Power Bins are not available in the Cut page. 🤔

@@martincole great to hear! I haven’t done a comparison of the Editor Keyboard vs Speed Editor. Bear in mind that the Ed Keyboard is a full keyboard with a few specialised keys primarily for use in the Cut Page. Apart from one, I’m generally content to work with my regular keyboard 😉

@@Chris.Roberts Ok thanks. I was going to get studio but then I saw that if you buy the keyboard it comes with studio. I actually had the speed editor, but for one reason or another I went back to FCP X and sold the Speed editor with the Pro licence. Weeks later I realised I had made a BIG mistake and now I am back on Resolve free so am looking to get the editor keyboard with the free studio upgrade as part of the deal. It depends. Some things are easier to accomplish in the Cut page as I mention in my reframing video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fZeRpaaBqd_SeZs.htmlsi=k5XWqspMSk3nKstN But, also, some things are more limiting like audio mixing. Not totally impossible, just not as easy.

It’s not. Thankfully we’re not forced into using one or the other. The features of each page are complementary rather than exclusive. That’s the beauty of Resolve 😉

The channel is better than yours latest Davinci Resolve edit Course, where I was I did close the course after 2 days. I think yours talent is better for offline teaching. Or the edit course needs a new structure.

Thanks for this... People like to learn in different ways of course. The books are based on the traditional "classroom" style of editing and aim to cover a broad number of subjects. In this KZfaq channel I'm aiming to "delve deeper" into specific topics. However, maybe you're right that the "traditional" courses need a refreshed structure in light of changing ways of learning... 🤔

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the Cut page too. Thankfully, nothing prevents us from editing exclusively in the Edit page... but the Cut page does suit some folks... Each to our own I guess! Thanks for commenting!
