It’s officially that time: After more than 23,000 miles, our 2021 Kia Sorento SX Prestige X-Line long-termer is leaving our test fleet. With its peppy turbocharged engine and premium-feeling interior, it’s safe to say that overall we enjoyed our time with the Sorento - though there were a few hiccups that detracted from the experience. So is the latest Sorento really a smaller, slightly more affordable Telluride? Edmunds’ Ryan ZumMallen is here to take you through the highs and lows of our 2021 Kia Sorento ownership experience to find out!

We have a 2022 Telluride and Sorento Turbo: love both of them. The Sorento’s crisp handling, creates a sports car feel in an SUV. As far as the third row seat is used for short trips (most of the time the third row seat is the down position for vehicles cars). As far a blindside monitoring or backing up No Problem in either vehicles. I would agree that the Tellurides seats are way more comfortable and the Telluride appears to consistently out perform the Sorento’s miles per gallon. The Telluride currently has approximately 18,000 miles and the Sorento approximately 12,000. Hope this was helpful feedback.

Engine and Transmission Blew After 7 Months Bought a brand-new 2023 Kia SPORTAGE. My Sportage broke after 7 months. The car is covered under warranty, but my car has been at the dealer for over 16 days and the parts have not even been ordered yet. They gave me a tiny car that my mother and brother cannot even fit into. I asked to have my payment waved until the Sportage was fixed, but they told me they could not do anything. After explaining that they did not give me a comparable rental car they sent me to another member of customer service who told me they could not do anything. I spent two hours on the phone today and nothing was resolved. They keep telling me they don't know how long it will be until it's fixed. In the meantime, I am trying to move four hours away and am waiting on my Sportage to move my last items. I’m hoping that the t will be ready before my apartment lease ends, or I will need to spend more money out of pocket to rent a moving van. They keep blowing me off when I ask to be reimbursed for the tow truck. Be careful before considering a Kia. Their cars don’t seem to be built to last.

I have a 2021 Sorento in the Aruba Green. I get so many complements (and questions) about the car, it is almost uncomfortable. On day one…at the drive thru, the car wash, the gas station. I have just over 19,000 miles and agree generally with their review. I do a lot of Long term rentals for work. As an elite customer, I only rent luxury and higher end cars (favors are Audis). In day over day use, the finish simulates but is not exactly that of premium euro vehicles, nor is the maintenance cost. However, I have 0 regrets about my decision to go Sorento over Telluride, or any of the euros. We drove them both back to back 3 times on the day we purchased. My wife still has her Mazda 9 with the v6 (but we have a 2023 Sportage Hybrid on order if that tells you anything). The Telluride had all the smooth power delivery I expect out of a naturally aspirated v6. This was the only underwhelming area we found in the Telluride. We said the same thing every time we got in the Telluride, “This is really nice”. Then we drove the Sorento. You feel the difference as soon as you press on the gas (for better or worse). There is a bit of lag (most noticeable off the line), but once the turbo kicks in you feel the tiger hiding behind that grill. It’s that power delivery off the line that has been most difficult, for my wife in particular, to get used to. It’s like the backing gripe only moving forward. At speed it is a very satisfying passing machine and can even inspire a few smiles from unsuspecting passengers when they see the Kia badge. The next 2 test drives with the Telluride were a little different. The comment from then on was, this is really nice…man I wish it came in a turbo model. The driving experience was bland in comparison. Which may be I deal in more of a “living room style” people mover, just not for me. I like the unlisted car option, a little self induced driving excitement, sometimes. For all it’s amenities, that was not one on the Telluride. The 2 sacrifices we had to make are fixed on the 2022 (a third would be to Tellurides seat comfort over the Sorento). Satisfaction between the 2 comes down truly to if the size is correct for your lifestyle (in practical terms, the Sorento is a 4 seater with bonus space; I would not be satisfied if I had to use it any other way) and if you need a little more than coffee on your drive in to work…

The sorento is great for parking in tight spaces because it is not as wide as the larger suv. It's safety freatures works well. Fun to drive. Nimble. Great turning radius. Based on the gauge, mpg is lower than on paper but is great in terms gas refilling frequency. In the case of road noise, I'm hoping a smaller size rim and bigger tire will help reduce it.

I have the 2021 SX model. 45,000 miles in 2 ½ years. I agree with your assessment of the driving dynamics. Love it. Ride is as described. I have traveled from Ohio to the West coast 2 times and have done other 450 mile trips and I think the seats are quite comfortable. I did not feel fatigues as I did in the 2016 Highlander. Gas mileage in mixed driving is around 25 mpg and I have gotten 29 mpg doing 50 -60 mph on back roads in Colorado. I measure mpg using the miles divided by fillup method. I disagree with the blind spot monitoring, I think it works great as does the adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist which is excellent. Two problems I have has was the transmission needed to be replaced due to a defect. That took about a week and I was happy with the result. Also there was a thermostat problem also taken care of under warrnaty. Overall, I am pleased witht he car and enjoy the drivng dynamics, fit and finish, and the electronics just work well.

Again, all of these miles came from driving freeway mostly (60-70%). I replaced the brakes pads thrice so far and resurfaced rotors once. I love my Sorento, that's all I can say. I don't have kids yet, so it's perfect sized for my needs. Maybe I'll upgrade for a Telluride once my woman decides to have babies....Cheers.

I don’t get why reviewers always nag on the third row. Dude it’s not supposed to be for people who are 5’8” and taller. It’s basically a kids seat. It’s like saying the back seats in the mustang are not made for not made for adults. Yea everyone knows this. I have two boys goth are 5’3 and they love the third row so much they fight over who is going to sit there. In my book that’s a win.

it's midsize - i've seen euro reviews calling it big, but Kia has the Seltos (subcompact); Sportage (compact); Sorento (smaller-end of midsize); and Telluride (entrenched-midsize); only thing missing is a true truck-like full size (ala Toyota Sequoia, Jeep, Escalade, etc)..

We love the car but reliability is questionable. I had the misfire around 16k miles. Now it’s been sitting at dealership due to faulty thermostat causing overheat. Problem was not determined until 2nd week, and now waiting for parts from overseas. Seem I might have to wait about a month since initially turning in the vehicle to dealership before getting it back…

, tell me a car company that doest have a recall or issues. From BMW, Benz, etc. The worst is Ford, GM, Jeep. Compared to those, Hyundai and Kia are much more reliable. Look at the last 8 years of reliability rating. Actually, in last year suvery, Hyundai and Kia was top 4, beating Honda and Toyota.

I think maybe you are a bit spoiled getting lots of top of the range models to play with. If you have to pay for a car out of your pocket I think the Sorrento is a great car for someone who occasionally wants to use a third row. If you use a third row all the time you clearly need a bigger vehicle to have any luggage capacity. So to criticise the Sorrento for limited luggage space is clearly speaking as someone who should have chosen a bigger car.
