There's a stark parallel in this episode between what Tom and Anna went through. Anna's encounter was brutal and heartbreaking but Tom's was also infuriating. Edna intentionally got him drunk then went into his room uninvited and seemingly raped a drunk man while she was completely sober. She's not just a gold digger, she's a predator. Men can be victims too. Mrs Hughes was a hero for both Tom and Anna. I know I'm late to the conversation here. Just finished the series on Netflix.

Tom is an idiot and wasn’t confident in his new position. He allowed Edna to confused him and make him feel shame, the old “oh you’re too big for us now” talk. The fact that he allowed her to get to him twice, makes him an idiot.

I love that Tom is still a part of the downstairs. He knows how the house really works and his first instinct when in trouble is to go to Ms. Hughes because she runs the staff, far more than Carson does in my opinion. Carson's the link between upstairs and downstairs, but Ms. Hughes is queen downstairs. It's also a fun parallel between Tom and Mary, since her instinct led her to Cora, head of the upstairs, when dealing with the dead body in her bed. No matter what happens the women are the real heads of the house, even if the men are heads of the family.
@ABirdOnTheMoon

Cranson is the lord of downstairs .. He comes in, they stand for him and he yells some gibberish to go outside. They just work around him because who can disobey? I love how Mrs Hughes learnt his keys so she could manipulate him like for the picnic day :) .. that was so fun to watch. I surely hope and depend on her wit to do that often regarding others. He surely was a hard nut to crack and he showed resistance at first but she knows how to soften him. Without her, he is a cranky old man who is not different from Mrs Batmore when it comes to kitchen appliances

“Don’t speak her name!” The way he says that line shows how much he still loves Sybil and misses her. The way he defended her memory in that moment. So powerful. Allen Leech is such a great actor that the simplest scenes convey so much about his character.

I never understood Edna's logic. If her plan had worked did she really expect to move upstairs and become part of the family? I did not see that happening. If he married her im sure he would have moved out.
@harringt100
@harringt100 4 жыл бұрын
I thought she just wanted him. Or maybe wanted to get bought off. You think she was trying to move upstairs? I honestly never really understood why Tom stayed around after Sibyl died. I suppose it's ultimately because Allen Leech wanted to stay on the show, but it was such a strange choice for the character. "I'm a fish out of water." Indeed. It got him out of being a real single parent, I guess. I can't say I blame him for wanting to avoid that.
@raephaelemasirnille5794
@raephaelemasirnille5794 4 жыл бұрын
@@harringt100 Yes, Edna definitely wanted to move upstairs. Tom's attachment to the family was his appeal. On his own he did not have anything. Edna even told Cora how wonderful it would be to be part of her family. I agree Tom staying in the house really made no since. I agree the writers wanted to keep that actor in the show so they used baby Sybil as the reason. He often said he knew he did not belong.

@@harringt100 I don't think it's that odd that a young widower with a small baby would want to raise his daughter around her family. And then things got complicated with him helping with the running of the business and everything.

I’m surprised Cora would hold an interview for a ladies maid without Mrs Hughes and Carson involved in the process in the first place. After all, the girl was going to be part of the staff and so she was going to be under the direct management of these two. Normally, they should have had a say. Also, Rose is very sweet and well-intended but she knows nothing about hiring someone, it’s not enough to like the person. In that case, the fact that Edna had left the house only so recently (and with no prior notice) and now wanted back in should have rung some bells. But Rose is too young and inexperienced to spot such things in someone’s CV and managed to sway Cora too, who seemed to have some doubts at the beginning.

Tom was drunk when Edna went into his room. Anna wasn’t the only one who was raped that night.

I REALLY dislike her. It’s not like she is in love with him. It’s purely monetary.

I forgot, what was the reason she got fired in the first place? But this Edna charactor was so dispicable, that i feel sorry for the actress.

Tom should had known that Edna has a crazy obsession over him. I had a feeling she seems a little psychotic

I thought two different women played her. How is it she was more attractive the first time around? Other than that, i was repulsed by that storyline.

Oh good, my brother's current gf, although she succeeded. Stalked him outside our house for months. Moved in, got pregnant, and after having the baby refuses to work and instead insists my brother provide for them. My brother is now suicidal and we have since banned her from our house. She lives with her mother in another city and my brother sends most of his money to support her. He tried to convince us to let her stay with us again till they can get a room somewhere and the baby can be in the city, but the rest of us forbid it. Kinda easy to ban her after she took the baby out of town without telling anyone and not giving the child's grandfather a chance to say goodbye. He died two months later. It's still beyond her grasp why we forbid her to set foot in this house again. I hope you rot in hell, Thuy.
