Hey Dave, I would be interested in seeing a proper-ish ESD compliance testing setup. It would be especially interesting to see all the failure modes that result from improper/absent ESD protection.

4:35 - After so many years of soldering, I have my mantra of "Always check the pins before soldering!". ...but, a few days ago, I still did almost the exact same thing when soldering a USB 3.0 connector. lol It's so easy to forget to check that stuff. I bent two of the pins on the connector, but luckily only soldered a few of them before realizing.

@@EEVblog Yeah. I wanted to try doing "proper" YT vids many years ago, but I'm too shy. I did hear from some KZfaqrs that it can be very tough to do the technical stuff with the camera in the way, whilst talking etc. I watch some people on live streams (like bitluni), and I have no idea how they can concentrate on electronics and programming, whilst reading a lot of the chat comments at the same time. That's hard.

Haefely products are not designed for ease of repair or manufacture but at the high cost of these units they can afford to take extra time to assemble. I have used used a couple of their pulse generators and have found them to be very reliable even though they don't have a highly refined appearance.

It reminds me when I decided to diy megaomhmeter a year ago. It was nicely looking in CAD, but when finished soldering the boards, and started to assembly, it appeared to be a very complex task. Really need some kind of mechanical engineering videos for electronic engineers.

CAD and real life are 2 different things and I have seen very silly things designed by engineers. Putting end caps on both ends of a pipe and welding them on the inside of the pipe for example😂😂 The best product designers have experience actually making stuff.

@@samuraidriver4x4 yes I understand that it usually takes years to master something. But I suppose similarly to best practices in pcb design, there should be some best practices for enclosure design for pcb. Particularly I tend to do a device as small as possible, just to find that it is almost impossible to assemble it :). And to be honest it would not be an issue for first iteration of design. But I'm hobbist, which means that first is probably the last iteration. That is why I'm looking for some generic rules to make first attempt as good as possible.

The fab I worked at years and years ago had all this esd stuff up and with an audit coming up from the us-gov, I thought it was about time to tell them that their esd strap testing machine was rubbish. I told them it was faulty they tried it, no problem and said I was wrong. So okay I come along no strap press button and pass test. They all chatter then they try it and still no pass....then I told them , rains here a lot my feet are soaked and there's no mat under the tester. An hour later every single one had a rubber mat under it and I had my five mins of fun watching top brass all having a panic attack.

Checked the original video and all switches were flush with the plate, and all had spacers when you took it apart. One fell on the mat, 3 stayed on and 2 were left on the board before you picked em off. So, this was a case of DaveSweeper doing the rug thing.

I still can't understand why they can't just use a normal two phase encoder. Maybe the design was pre software? Maybe that one was just copied from the valve design.

I hate fixing weird rotary encoders when they use complicated controller based logic. Last one I did had a whole z80 in between the custom 'magnetic tape' type detector and some kind of rs232. I tested everything but the clock crystal and the output just kept doing weirder and weirder random things. Turns out the clock crystal was completely hoopajooped and had become vibration sensitive. Caused the processor to make weird and beautiful garbage and jump into modes I'd never seen before it went completely dead. Heating the crystal finally made the problem obvious right before it locked up or whatever they do.

Sorry, but you aren't selling me no reverse side cutters for that maneuver at 13:40 Regular ones would have worked just as well. But yes, this indeed seems to be one of the absolutely god awful assemblies the world has seen. However, I do suspect that they soldered those lugs to the case after assembling the board stack up. But even then it wouldn't help them the slightest with alignment for the user interface... I can't wrap my head around why they did it like this.
