I agree. I hate web pages like this, with animated backgrounds and things that scroll at different rates, and low contrast text. Extremely distracting from the information being presented. I've got a 100 megabit internet connection and it takes like 6 seconds to load when normal web pages load in like 0.6 seconds. And "Please Scroll Down?" Reallly? How about you show me something useful on the page when it loads. Grrrr...

Just put text in front of opaque boxes to separate it from the business going on in the background and you will be good. I am dyslexic and reading over that dynamic background makes me dizzy.

I've got to agree with V8Snail, I don't like their home page design either. I viewed it 17+ hours after V8's post so maybe it is already lowered in contrast but I still don't like it. Annoying background video, too much animation, and EXTREMELY big spacing when viewed on a PC at only 100%. Plus a whopping 16MB in size. I wouldn't be wanting to visit too often on a paid mobile connection. This seems to be the fad these days to add lots of space and make you scroll down a mile long page. Not to forget the other annoying fad of having a non scrolling bar at the top. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. If you want to design your page for "mobile" then just detect the connection and provide the big annoying sizes for it but don't make those on a PC or tablet have to view the exact same. THAT BEING SAID, it looks like a cool product and the website design wouldn't stop me from buying the product. A technical note about the graphs at the bottom of the page... recording and showing a separate graph for °C and °F annoyingly fills up the graph especially when the data points are not overlapping. Plot one line for °C and put a second legend on the right for °F if you really have to but they have to line up. At least you didn't have another line for Kelvin! :-) I would really like to see Dave put together some demos for this. Or maybe run some CPU testing programs while monitoring how hot it gets inside while totally sealed and outdoors. It would be interesting to see more about this.

Daniel S - Kitchen Machine Shop :) This is just the enclosure. The mainboard is the big deal with buffered, protected IO ports and the whole concept. I will be a backer for this project. After when there is ethernet port :)

Sure, the board looks great. It was just that Dave assumed they also made the enclosure, and I read your comment as being about the "rigid quality" of said enclosure. Not taking anything away from the Rather Board in any way. They made a great decision when selecting this enclosure.

Johann Wyss Well, they seem to have overlooked powering the Pi from the header pins, instead supplying a short USB cable which when connected fouls some of the board's headers!

Dear Alex Quant, (Somebody already had the same question on our facebook, so we will be able to give You a fast reply.) The short answer to this question is that we did not experience overheating problems in our rooftop weather station application (www.ratherboard.com/#live_demo) during last summer (despite the fact that in Budapest 30-35°C temperature during the day is common). The long answer is a bit more complex: We have done a test to estimate the thermal conductivity of Ratherboard's enclosure. We have put a power resistor and an NTC temperature sensor inside the enclosure, which were connected to Ratherboard's external connector header. The power resistor was connected to a laboratory power supply. The ambient temperature was also measured. During the first measurement the resistor dissipated 4.2W. After 65 minutes the internal temperature became constant (34°C), while the ambient temperature was 23°C. The temperature difference was 11°C and the thermal resistance was 2.63K/W. After the first measurement we increased the voltage and the resistor dissipated 7.56W. After 60 minutes the internal temperature was constant again (42.3°C), while the ambient temperature remained at 23°C which gives a thermal resistance of 2.56K/W. According to this measurement the thermal resistance of the enclosure is approximately 2.6K/W, which means that if you dissipate 1W inside the enclosure then the internal air temperature will be 2.6°C more than the ambient temperature. According to www.raspberrypi.org/help/faqs/#powerReqs the Raspberry Pi 3 model B consumes 1.2A at 5V (worst case scenario with lots of external USB devices connected) , which gives 6W. Ratherboard's other components power consumption is negligible compared to this value. If we assume that Ratherboard's switching power supply has 80% (underestimated for this calculation) efficiency, than the total dissipated power inside the enclosure is 7.5W, which means that the temperature will be 20°C more than the ambient temperature. Let's say that the ambient temperature is 50°C because of direct sunlight, than the air temperature will be 70°C inside Ratherboard's enclosure. According to www.raspberrypi.org/help/faqs/#performanceOperatingTemperature the LAN controller is rated to maximum 70°C temperature. The chip will have higher temperature than the air around it, so in this scenario the chip will probably have higher temperature than the rated maximum value. The above example shows that if the Raspberry Pi works very hard with many peripherals connected to it than you should consider installing heatsinks on the Raspberry Pi and installing Ratherboard in a shady area. Also note that the Raspberry Pi 3 model B typical bare-board current consumption is less than 500mA (www.raspberrypi.org/help/faqs/#powerReqs), which means only 3.2W dissipation, which only means 8.3°C temperature difference. So the system's actual temperature performance is application dependent. For example if you have direct sunlight but lots of airflow than the heat transfer will be much better, hence the thermal resistance will be lower. We did not experience overheating problems in our rooftop weather station application during last summer as I mentioned earlier. The CPU load was not much (below 10%) and the Ratherboard consumed approximately 0.18A at 12V, which gives 2.2W dissipation. This value is the third of the worst case value (7.5W). We have not installed heatsinks on the Raspberry Pi 3 model B. Termal behaviour has to be investigated in every electronics design, of course, a Ratherboard application is no exception.

I don't think they did overlook powering the pi via GPIO, powering it via GPIO bypasses several safety systems not limited to the fuse and BCM. I think their decision was a good one personally, Albeit clunky.

yh but that way they didnt bypass the integrated protection and any problem that might not trigger the rather board protection will trigger the rasp protection and if it doesnt trigger the rasp protection the blame is on the rasp foundation and not the rather board

Dear Carlos Almeida, Yes, our goal was to use both of the protection possibilities. (Ratherboard's protection and the RPi's also.)

Still think it would be better to have the option to power it from the GPIO , that micro USB is not that rugged and it would also allow for fast swap out of the Pi, swapo the sd and BOOm your done , push it back on the headers. The Pi is so cheap you could consider it expendable, ease of service and speed of service are the most important i think, at least for this application.

I am going to hazard to guess the weird solder mask colors were to look like a raspberry pi? Raspberry jam on the top, crust on the bottom? Not being very artsy I stick to green solder mask.

White looks pretty nice, as well as the black used by Apple, that looks very nice! I really have no idea why they used two different solder masks?

If they ever get thrown out should I save them?

That would have got me shot or at very least fired. I had a job setting up and installing GPS tracking and location services, security systems, lighting and other electronic services / devices into blast trucks for the mining sector. They were vehicles which would transport and set the "prill" (ANFO explosives) and their detonators. Naturally there had to be redundancies for everything. These connectors were chosen for there seal-ability and their insulation properties etc. Excellent connectors and it shows the level of quality and ruggedness the designers of the raspberry pie boredom thing were striving to achieve...
