What I'm really taking away from this video is that concept of letting the other person know "I am listening". I have struggled much with not being anxious about catch-up calls with people I want to continue building my friendship with and Coach Alex's channel is really helping me work on concrete steps to learn how to converse well.

I had an argument with a guy I just met about active listening. He thought that interrupting my story and telling something he related to in that story was part of “good conversation”. I tried to explain to him that he completely took over my story to tell his own. He believes that you shouldn’t have to wait till someone’s done speaking to say what you want to say as long as it goes back to that conversation, however when I tried to tell my story again I never finished it because he continued to interject based on his relation to it. He tried to tell me that I never got my story out because I never interrupted him, but that’s not how I have conversations. I like to listen without interrupting. Although him and I are not close I may show him this video to give him some insight.

Well, a couple of thoughts come to mind. If it's a long story (longer than a minute or two), then it would be normal for most people listening to want to jump in and say something. If it's a story that is slowly told, the person might be trying to move it along. But, in most cases, a simple "uh huh" is really all that is required when listening (as long as the story isn't long-winded). But, without knowing how long your story was (and only hearing your side), I think your philosophy of just completely listening (rather than interrupting) is the way to go. Now, on the other side of the coin, I have found that some people really like lots of dynamic back and forth even during short stories and that desire to jump in may be an expression of their excitement about talking to you. They are trying to show their similarities with you by essentially sharing the telling of the story. So, you could say that the other person is looking to enhance their experience by jumping in but they are not necessarily trying to slow you down. But, I hear you. That's happened to me many times. It can be very frustrating. At least you gave him the feedback. He may not agree with you right now but it's possible somebody else will tell him in the future and it may eventually sink in and he'll become a better listener.

I’m in a relationship with this woman I truly feel like is the one for me, our bond truly is special. After 6 months of being together, one thing that’s really been causing issues with our relationship is she hates repeating herself understandably. She feels like I’m not listening to the details in what she tells me and it shows when I ask a clarification question hours, days or weeks after the conversation. Sometimes it can be difficult when she tells me something and she and we’re at a beautiful sunset or I’m driving or out in a crowded place or with our friends as I’ll get distracted and sometimes quite. I am definitely a quite reserved person who finds comfort in complete clarity so I’ve struggled with not asking dumb questions and putting the pieces together as she would say when the story/information gives the pieces to put it all together but I try to communicate well with her by asking questions that end up frustrating her. Thank you for your videos, I subscribed to this amazing content!

I've always said to keep Communication open. Throw out the rule, treat others as you want to be treated. If you really want someone to listen to you, treat them as they want to be treated. I was in the Marine Corps for 6 years. The way I can talk to people and be talked to and my threshold for tolerance in that is a lot higher than the overwhelming majority of people. If I went around treating everybody as I wanted to be treated, I wouldn't be doing it offensively but most people would understandably be offended. I prefer blunt openness and directness over any kind of tactfulness that is not necessary. But I recognize that I'm not most people, so if I want them to actively listen to what I'm saying I need to present it in a way that is not not offensive, intrusive, or that makes people uncomfortable.

I noticed I can be pretty good about sending positive feedback while someone is talking but I tend to slip up when it comes to my talking point, I’ll go on and on sometimes and I can totally feel it when it’s happening but it’s like sometimes I just can’t help myself! I want to be less focused inward and really tune into what is on other people’s mind. I already know what’s in my head there’s no reason for me to go on about it to others lol

It is often really difficult communicating with Seniors 80+, since it seems they are going off track so much to stories from years ago that have nothing to do with the current topic. They are trying to pass on their years of wisdom, and that is when it is important to see the common factor and the underlying message! That is what is importantant to them at this point in their life, which is probably not whatever you are trying to talk about.
@AbeOrtiz88

That’s very common. When I speak to certain people (I’m in Realestate) I use a pull technique. Frame your conversation to where you listen however you control the narrative of the conversation with questions that follow up with each other. Even if they drift off you’ll be able to pull them back in easily.

This interesting I think lots of people should learn this communication skills because it can be helpful. Talking is good but also listening is good too, without having misunderstandings that would be great. Do you know it can be so helpful with friendship or relationship family school co-work, neighbor whoever you talk too in day or night. It might take practice to work on it. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If a man and women have this skills it would be helpful. 🤗🙂

@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 6 жыл бұрын
You mean clarifying the speaker's overall message? I always listen for the main theme or themes in what they are saying. Usually, people speak with some overall message in mind. When we can separate the main points in our head from the supporting details, we'll be able to clarify their message in our minds. If they are giving examples, telling stories, and sharing details, then those are usually supporting some overall message. I hope this helps.

I'm not good at stay on them either. I feel that it may have been taught when quite young that I should show people I am listening by relating to them. This was perceived (by me) to be engaging with them, but it actually can take things well off course. I've recently set the challenge to stop interjecting with "I know how you feel, this happened to me" stories. I guess it says something that we bother to improve on it.

I worked in a place that the director of communication and ethics that will talk to you stupid things when you are very busy getting her job done and dusting her old incomplete work load, trying really hard to be in professional setting. All about her drug past, infidelities and bohemian life, dresses, coffee needs but one will talk about work and she will yawn, fart or become aggressive, critical, curious with no provocations or make a nasty comment meant to humiliate or lower you to dust, ego like a goddess. I felt this people needed further training in this area, they really affect everyone that try to help them. I end up ignoring her comments, flaws, screams, lies, intrusions, insecurities, comments about everyone, fears of younger woman in the field and when all fail walked away from the toxic environment to work in something else. If no ask about it, I don't mention her or her people or try to damage her image, we all have problems to deal with and communication is a big one.
