The new microplastics study is terrifying. Not only did the authors find microplastics in blood vessel walls, the people that had microplastics in their blood vessels were 4.53 times more likely to have either a heart attack, stroke, or die over a 3 year period.

@@seektruth9982 I think you're trying to get at something else, which I'd be happy to hear you specify but that is basically what I am saying. Take BPA as an example. When the harmful effects of some plastics are discovered or there is finally proof of their impact, they are switched out for a chemical cousin. Like BPS and BPF which replaced BPA. Some plastics were around since 1869 but had more decorative purposes. The plasticizers started leaching into our bodies as the use of plastics became more popular.

I can highly recommend Lifestraw (glass pitcher). Removes plastics and many other nasties (including PFAS). However a recent report also shows that *simply boiling water* reduces microplastics surprisingly well. Apparently binding to calcium deposits in the kettle - the harder the water the better results. Nonetheless consumers should start demanding more glassware or nothing will happen.

I heard that the average person eats about a credit card's worth of plastic a week! Also the videos about how plastic negatively impacts Testosterone or increases Estrogen signaling is frightening. A thermal printed receipt has up to 1000 times more BPA than a water bottle (all the Bisphenol alternatives to BPA are just as bad) and it is absorbed significantly through skin contact!!! I think micro plastics will turn out to be the cause, we have done terrible things to our environment. These suggestions are all good to try and minimize the potential exposure to MNP’s even if the cause and effect is definitely is hard to tease out. One item which needs further investigation is if the higher presence of MNP’s in blood vessels may be related to damaged glycocalyx. It seems plausible that it *may* normally serve as a barrier to the MNP’s. In this way the MNP’s may largely be a marker of endothelial dysfunction and the local ECM’s. The MNP’s could be causing plenty of other issues once they are in the tissue, but this hypothesis could explain why not all of the participants in the study saw MNP’s in their tissues. Something I would love to have teased out is if the course of events and confounding factors are the following: highly processed individually wrapped foods tend to be higher in MNP’s and other plasticizers due to packaging and contamination -> these foods also tend to allow for higher glucose excursions and over consumption which seems to have greater damage to glycocalyx integrity especially if not much time is given for repair between excursions -> over time this could also become entangled with type-2 diabetes further exacerbating endothelial disfunction which further aggravates atherosclerosis -> the MNP’s then become further integrated into the plaque as part of the atherosclerotic process. Unfortunately the glycocalyx is notoriously hard to study since it is really only intact in-vivo, but hopefully better in-vivo imaging techniques and labeling allows us to see this in living humans.

I wonder if there are supplements and herbs that can be taken to reduce this problem in your blood?

I think there are herbs that can help with this level of toxicity. I know there are some mushrooms that help eliminate some plastics.

Microplastic comes from the ultraviolet breaking down of the plastic. If your container is new, not exposed to sunlight, then it doesn’t produce microplastic. Keep it in the shades and keep it in a cool place. Most filters don’t filter ultra fine particles under 5 microns, which nanoplastic is 1 micron, so the filter won’t help it, but it will remove other contaminants.

It doesn't seem like they adjusted for any risk factors like assessing their diet. There could easily be confounding variables. For example, people eating highly processed food that comes in plastic packaging would have microplastics in their plaques. But the causal factor could be the food, not the plastics.

I would suggest you look into blood and plasma donations to reduce microplastics in the body as well. There are recent studies suggesting this is possible.

Another thing you didn't mention is to donate blood. Good for others, your health generally, and can reduce PFAS and microplastics levels. If you are on finasteride you can't donate but for most it is a good option. Controlling the input of micropastics is good but boosting the output is another option.

I have a glass water bottle and a stainless steel one. I'd advise to you too to try to steer away from plastic drinking bottles, even if they are BPA free. I still need to replace my plastic (protein) shaker and my bicycle flask - the proper steel bottles for these are pretty expensive unfortunately.

@@9xqspx6 so stainless steel leach's have metals like chromium. And, some of the Chinese stainless contain other heavy metals... Even lead... Those real light and transparent plastic bottles or do convenient. Each bottle lasts me for months and months. Don't think any micro plastics are left after do many fillings and washings.

Well SHID time to actually re-start using my reusable coffee cups (they're ceramic with food grade silicone lids), one state in Australia has already banned the single-use ones with plastic anyway and I'd rather not look like I'm just doing as I'm told by only using them after the eventual ban here.

Read the study twice looking for a reason not to run screaming into the night. I did not find one. At least you and other KZfaq doctors I respect are reaching the same conclusion about the study so I'm somewhat reassured I'm not completely nuts. Deeply suspicious of "ceramic" coatings on cookware. Increasingly it seems to mean an exotic plastic resin matrix instead of the pottery-fired-in-a-kiln we peasants consider ceramic.
