Effy Stonem Style Analysis: The Psychology of the Glamorized Modern Femme Fatale

For this style analysis, I will be covering the most well-known character of Skins: Effy Stonem, following her mental state and collectic personal style from childhood into adulthood. Though each Skins character is specifically styled to be distinctly identifiable, Effy’s look is the most recognizable and associated with the series because she is the embodiment of the rebellion, beauty, and mystery that the franchise holds.
There is a lot beneath the surface of her image, so I'll also be breaking down the application of the Stoic trope and use of the Femme Fatale archetype in modern media. Through this, we can look past the glamorization of Effy to see the depth to her character that is masked by her captivating image and “to hell with it all” attitude, which gives her the illusion of a carefree seductive girl that only a few can truly piece together.

YES. How the 7th season just blew past all the character’s pasts and answered no questions...it was so wrong. I get it’s like real life, how we don’t always know what happens. But Cook knew. And everybody else should’ve known as well. I remember the exact moment I watched that part, how shocked I was that it was just so out of the blue. The fact Effy gets under so many people's skin for multiple reasons shows how fantastic Kaya is as an actress. The fact people can separate Kaya from Effy as if Effy is her own person shows again how incredibly talented Kaya truly is at portraying the character. No wonder she went on to be in many huge films and be so successful.

YES. Too often I see actresses get sooooo much hate for viewers’ inability to separate the actor from the acting. Honestly Effy’s friendship with Pandora was really toxic. Effy was friends with her because she didn’t see Pandora as a threat. Like when she asked why Pandora thinks they sre friends, Pandora immidiately responded ”because you are the coolest ever, and i’ll totally do anything you say. And cause none of your men would bone me because i am useless.” That sentence showed the sad reality what was going on with them. Effy was friends with Pandora because she wasn’t considered ”cool or attractive” so no one would take interest on her instead of Effy. Another great example is her reaction when she found about Panda and Cook. She wasn’t angry because she was jealous, no Panda was right when she said Effy doesn’t really want Cook, she was shocked how someone ACTUALLY got with Panda after her and how she tought Pandora started become potential rival to her.

im not sure why so many people romanticize effy, i mean i see the reasoning but although effy is sensitive, that makes her selfish in many ways. @@anjalifigueiredo1736 yes, but she's not sooooo complex, you talk like she was a diamond. Hell no. ALL characters had this complexity just like you and me, effy wasn't the great exception, she is pretty and that's why people like her and even though that's the point of her character, why do we give so much credit for that kind of people? And I liked her brother more, at least Tony had an evolution, effy didn't. And her friendship with Pandora was very twisted, effy was friend of pandora because she wasn't a threat, she could manipulate her, effy was very insecure. I agree with the main comment.

The difference is effy forever stayed trapped into manic pixie dream girl trope and didn't flesh out as a character even when she grew up which is writer's fault but Cassie eventually grew to have more depth in her that made her more human, she was a full-fledged character that sort of broke the mpdg tag in season 2 with her reacting differently to the things happening around her (although they did sexualize her again in skins pure, the ending was very cathartic and wholesome)

As someone who is expressive and sometimes too talkative, I used to be jealous of how reserved and mysterious Effy was. But I guess that inability to express your emotions isn't something to strive for and ultimately led to her downfall. Everyone wanted to be like Effy to appear a certain way to others, but isn't being happier and brighter like Pandora, despite being perceived as annoying or "too much", more fulfilling.

Yeah. I had an incredibly conventionally attractive, model - beautiful friend that was mysterious and reminded me a lot of Effy. Everyone had a crush on her. She was a DJ, very talented and charming in a mysterious way. I always envied and glorified her for being able to be so calm, seemingly cold and collected, never complaining about personal problems, captivating everyone’s attention, etc., but down the line she developed extreme addiction issues and I realised the wasn’t „calm and collected“ at all, she was just suppressing her emotions to a point that made her very sick. I‘m sorry for envying her and not realising she needed help.

speaking as a fan of this channel, loving all the content, being sincere, I feel that effie thing only works to be stylish because of her appearance. This style just looks good because her face and the storyline/interpretation. Dont get me wrong! I recognize that there is this chic gothic style like jenny in gossip girl or even avril lavigne girlfriend era. I can’t see a “ordinary” girl wearing this effie style and dont looking unpolished and cheap.

Looking like her physically definitely would help but in the end I think it comes down to attitude. If you don't own your look it just won't work. She could even possibly look cheap if her personality didn't match.

True but that's why it fits her character so well, I feel like it really accentuates the fact that Effy can do whatever she wants just because she's beautiful and everyone is inexplicably in love with her no matter what she does or what she looks like. She doesn't have to care about looking polished etc, she's already beautiful and people already love her. She could be wearing a garbage bag and guys would still lose their minds over her lol

I think she doesn’t speak a lot as she feels no one listens anyway, thus she thrives in her appearance of “bad girl”. How could she care when no one else does. Or at least she feels. Shes stoic bc at home, her pain is never the spotlight. No one seems to pay attention at home except Tony, and even then, it’s like an alliance of “we’re both coping and fucked, I understand and have your back.”
@rjafitzgerald
@rjafitzgerald 3 жыл бұрын
Agree but also see it as a control/punishment mechanism for her. The only power she feels that she has is to withhold her voice especially with characters older than her at the time. A lot of the characters in Skins could be seen as reactions to feeling lack of control: Tony manipulates and is self-centred. Cassie controls her eating and weight. Jal works hard in hopes of achieving success. Chris tries to escape/ forget it through partying. Sid bumbles around. Michelle rebels against her mum and horrid stepdad and tries to keep up appearances. It’s not the only way to look at the characters and there’s probably many that don’t fit but it’s something I always think about.

So many people in the comments are hating on the character because she wasn't a role model when the show never intended her to be one. She was supposed to be a mess and unlikable. Not every character in a show, book, movie, or any piece of media is created to be loved or looked up to. Sometimes they're a cautionary tale, a mirror that shows us the flaws within ourselves that we need to work on or a road that we should never take.

Minus the partying, drugs and sex, I surprisingly relate a lot to her, right down to the bpd, self harm, psychotic depression. TBH i think that effy could have been a revolutionaire portail of autism. That put a way that a highly intelligent person could cope with her different working brain. How her hypersensetifity causes her to keep distant and afraid of the intense emotions that comes with taking a leap of faith into people. How her intellegence makes her able to see and understand things that are unnoticable for others and makes her able to calculate how to portrait herself and what to say. The constant unexplained feeling of being on their own and lost. Idk i just saw more in effy than in JJ
@teresadunn903
