You can tell Christopher Lee was a giddy kid being able to act in this trilogy. He was a huge fan of Tolkien and mythology in general.

Saruman's speech to the Uruk-hai makes me tremble. It's more fearsome than the speech he gives to send them off to Helm's Deep. The ferocity in his voice is awe-inspiring.

I love the body language in this scene. Lurtz has been alive for only a short time and has no understanding of his place in the world. As Saruman explains how lowly and pathetic orcs are you see him look to the floor, his eyes darting and a low growl erupting as reality sets in. And then Saruman explains that Lurtz is better than that. That he is perfected. And immediately Lurtz' head lifts and his chest swells with pride and you get the feeling he's been given the sense of dignity he craved and is eternally grateful to Saruman for that. He's not some twisted, lowly creature. He is a proud fighting Uruk Hai of the White Hand and that's all that matters to him.

Man, the first orc orthodontist is going to make a fortune fixing all those overbites.

The fact the Uruk=Hai only serves Saruman here and Saruman tells them to bring Frodo and the ring to him and not Mordor definitely shows Saruman's intentions laid bare. He wants to rule alone not with Sauron. Gandalf said it best "there is only one lord of the ring. And he does not share power".

R.I.P. Christopher Lee, You were amazing as Saruman

Orcs looked much better with makeup and practical effects than the CGI monsters they were in The Hobbit.

Saruman bred Lurtz to be a leader. That's why he's educating him on the history of the orcs. He not only wants him to be aware of the history of the orcs being elves once, he wants Lurtz to know that the "Dark Powers" (Morgoth, whom Sauron served) are responsible for him being what he is. Thus, Saruman instills a hatred of not only those that Saruman himself opposes, men and elves, but of Sauron as well. This is fitting since Saruman ultimately intends to betray Sauron and take the Ring from him. He's brainwashing Lurtz. Edit 10 months later: I came back and watched the scene again. Notice how when Lurtz hears Saruman talk about how the elves that would become orcs were “tortured and mutilated”, Lurtz roars. And then the look on his face afterward while Saruman is calling the orcs “a ruined and terrible form of life”. He’s uncertain about who and what he is. Remember, Lurtz was born exactly how he is. Think of how weird it would be being born fully grown as basically a monster. But Saruman tells him that he’s “perfected” him. He’s trying to ensure Lurtz’s loyalty and instill a hatred of Sauron into him. It’s insane how much subtext this one scene alone has. I love this trilogy.

Imagine being able to use the energy of the co-actor in this scene. Christopher Lee speaking to an actor so well made you would think Orcs are real, and the actor playing the Uruk-hai being able to feed off Lee's energy and booming vocals as he delivers his monologue.

Random fact, the guy that played Lurtz also apparently played Gothmog and the Witch King in Return of the King. They apparently chose him for both orc roles because he was really good at showing a really fierce expression through the prosthetics. That's just really neat to me

It's important to bear in mind that Saruman bred the Uruk Hai purely as warriors without any concern for longevity whatsoever. The fact that he told Lurtz about how he and the others were a perfected breed of orc along with the history of their origins, was solely to further instill them with a sense of pride to match their fighting prowess.

LOTR is going to age a hell of a lot better than the Hobbit. I still can't believe this movie is almost fifteen years old yet it looks fucking badass.

What about their legs? They don't need those.

I really love 0:00-0:42...It is in my view one of the most subtle yet emotion-filled scene involving Orcs or Uruk-hai in the movies. Take for example the segment at 0:09, where Saruman states about the Orcs: "They were elves, once." You can see Lurtz react ever so slightly after hearing that sentence, as if he slightly exposes more of his sharp teeth. It's like he gets angered by the mere mention of elves. It could also be a reaction to the idea that he and his fellow beasts are descended from their enemies. And at 0:17, when Saruman explains how these ancient elves were tortured and mutilated, Lurtz reacts with a growl. In my view, this can mean two things. Perhaps he is glad, glad that his enemy, the Elves, recieved such long and immense pain. But on the other hand he might be showing another display of sheer anger, which he can't really control this time. Anger at the realisation that he has literally been born from torture and suffering. But what i see as the most significant moment by far is 0:21. As Saruman says: "A ruined, terrible form of life" Lurtz lowers his head, and looks down at himself. For the first time, he takes a moment to think about what kind of a being he really is...and what might he be feeling as a result? Sadness? Shame? Misery? All three perhaps. In any case, Lurtz seems to realise what he really is, a poisoned soul, damaged beyond repair. But he isn't given time to dwell on it. Because Saruman continues on how the Orc has now been perfected to become Uruk-Hai, and with that Lurtz slowly raises his head once again, as if he's accepting and embracing all of the pain and misery of his race. He now has one purpose. "Whom do you serve?" "Saruman." He serves Saruman, the one who will lead him to that purpose: War. That is why this is such an oustanding and suprisingly deep scene for me, and really makes Lurtz into one of if not the best developed Orc/Uruk-Hai in the films character-wise. It is also great manipulation on Saruman's part. He uses this short moment to turn Lurtz from a simple foul creature born from mud into a determined and merciless killing machine, an Uruk-Hai.

Props to Lawrence Makoare as Lurtz. Very terrifying. Can't imagine how long it took to make him look like that.

Gotta say, the Uruk Hai are probably my favorite antagonist minions. So badass instead of the usual, faceless, cannon fodder minions from other works of fiction that just run in front of the main characters and die effortlessly.

"Uruk-hai, what is your profession?" "To beat the crap out of anyone until plot armored characters kills us by thousands!!" "That's my boys."

I love how Saruman makes sure to cast a spell to his departing warriors. The whole “you do not know pain, you do not know fear” wasn’t a suggestion it was a psychic command.

Saruman: "Do you know how the orcs first came to be?" Lurtz: Yes, through evolution. Orcs and Elves shared a common ancestor for hundreds of thousands years ago. But because of different environmental factors occurred, they exposed different kind of natural selection pressures. This let that an alteration of DNA sequence between Elves and Orcs. After that because their DNA sequences were altered by mutation, they were separated from each others and became two new different species. Saruman: "Atheist SCUM! At least show some respect to our values if you don't believe in magic!"

What an absolute beast Lurtz is. One of the most imposing and fearsome antagonists in movie history

0:45 That Uruk receiving the mark of Saruman in ecstasy possessed by the power of Sauron!

I never noticed this before, but the way the Uruks react when getting their white marks is chilling. When I was little I thought they were angry. Like "get your hands off me, how dare you touch me" sort of thing, cause they thought they were better than the orcs. Seeing it now, it's way better! They way they tilt their heads into the paint, the tremors in their hands and faces, they way their roars seem to force themselves from their throats. They aren't angry, they're *invigorated*! Filled with a desire for slaughter and a frenzied devotion to Saruman. The Uruks are fanatics as much as they are warriors.

Sound design impeccable. Those Uruk growls are so good

That was one tough son of s bitch. I think he was the toughest of all the orcs in the trilogy.

I love how Shore scored the scene starting at 1:29. Musically, it sounds like a locomotive gathering speed, making it feel like once the Uruk-Hai start their mission, there's no stopping them.

Witnessing the greatness of this trilogy, and then seeing the atrocity that is the Rings of Power on Amazon, makes me so thankful that I grew up in my early teens when this movie and trilogy came out. Thank you so much Peter Jackson for making Tolkien proud.

I always found this scene fascinating. Here we have a character made completely for the movie, born out of the ground as a deadly combination between orc and man, being explained the circumstances of his creation by the one who created him. Lurtz is not a deep character, but the circumstances that helped shape him, as well as the acting, turns the character's simplicity into something truly intimidating.

I always like to think, that this Saruman's speech is not just something motivational, but he had a sort of magic inside. I think he buffed them

These films captured the terrifying and animalistic nature of the orcs perfectly. The Hobbit CGI made them look like cartoons.

The Uruk-Hai are my favorite breed of Orc in LOTR. They’re basically Sauron’s and Saruman’s super-soldier Orcs. Also yes, Sauron bred the Uruks first. Saruman merely copied the Dark Lord’s methods.

The first film had this gritty and brutal aesthetic to it that was lost after. Even the next two films, the dark forces lack this dark age feel that made them intimidating.

Possibly one of the most iconic evil wizards (aside from Voldemort, Morgoth, and Sauron himself) in all of film and literature. Though Sauron and Morgoth are technically more powerful sorcerers in Tolkien's Legendarium Saruman (with his black staff and glowing Palantir) summated the popular image of the Evil Sorcerer in early High Fantasy.
