No girl group brought the funk like En Vogue. Destiny’s Child was never funky and TLC had some funky tunes, but that type of R&B died at the end of the 90s along with almost all good music. There were a few decent songs in the early 2000s, but since then, it’s one assembly line piece of trash after another. Even pop singers can’t sing. Didn’t that used to be a prerequisite?

These lady groups of the nineties were groundbreaking in their open discussion about current event issues that we still battle to this day. Salt N Pepa had 'Let's Talk About Sex' and it was eye opening and brought the subject of sex to the forefront. En Vogue talking HARD about prejudice. Groups like this brought the talk to the table. We still have so much to learn and do.

Yeah, but look how things have changed. This song is pretty much a hate crime these days, since the wokies and "anti-racists" have declared that "color-blindness" is impossible and a concept that is a tool of white supremacy. SMH.

I think the issue was initially with management, which then lead to resentment between the two disagreeing parties.
@detectivekornfed
@detectivekornfed 10 ай бұрын
@@ToniMcGinty yes, you are correct that was a big part of it. Dawn Robinson has stated in numerous interviews that En Vogue's Management had EV's members sign a lengthy, convoluted contract in which it was buried in the fine print that the 4 (original) members would get $0.02 each per record. Keep in mind that Dawn, Maxine, Terry, and Cindy were ALL young at the time, all between age 20/21 (Dawn), and the others were likely around their mid-20s. Dawn has stated that none of them were aware of these royalty terms in the contract, and based on other remarks from her, my understanding is it seems like collusion between the Management and the label's Legal Representation, which is all too common in the music industry. Lastly, during that time in the 1990s, Terry dated music producer Denzil Foster, and I don't recall most of the details, but from that relationship, she was able to record and release a solo record in 1995. That, along with the financial manipulation of En Vogue's members, created turbulence and tension, and unfortunately, the group's original lineup was not sustainable. Dawn left in April 1997 and Maxine left in 2001.

We all came together in dance, music, and in friendship on the dance floor, at people's homes, and Jammin in the car together. My friends came together in nothing short of friendship, love and respect. I am Ukrainian on my mother's side of the family, and my father is from the original people of Canada or as many refer to, (Native Peoples). We didn't think of color, race, or religion. We just shared our lives, loved each other, and respected each other. We danced, lived, loved, shared our moments, and loved who we loved. Mike drop. Grandma Lori.C.

This song blew everyone away from the get-go. EnVogue was badass. Guys used to just gape at the video screen in clubs and bars when this played. Another incredible song with amazing meaning is Colors by the Black Pumas. Different style, but one of my favorite songs.

Those ladies can SANG! Loved them back in the 80s! They brought the vocals, the attitude and the sexy together. Add a rockin' riff and you got a homerun hit like this. 🔥

I'm an old guy I've been listening to music for a very long time. My favorite genre is blues driven Rock but I do like all music. When this song came out I asked my friend who worked at a rock station in my area. Why don't you play this song or even Michael Jackson's Dirty Diana. They're both great rock songs. His answer was correct and it was it's the Public's perception of the artist is why we don't play those songs. Kind of sad isn't it. Great music not getting played. It's just a thought from an old guy. Always enjoy your show thanks.

I was curious and went back and watched Moonwalker. When Dirty Diana started playing I was thinking to myself, "wow...why didn't THIS song hit bigger?" Maybe it was a sound too ahead of its time, or maybe there's only so many MJ songs that could be big at once, but whatever the case, it's really one of his better songs that is rarely mentioned.

Great reaction, Jay and Amber. En Vogue were a great band, some of their tracks which I recommend, ''My Lovin'", "Hold On", "Don't Let Go", "Whatta Man", "Give Him Something He Can Feel", "Whatever", there are other tracks but these are good ones to start with.

TLC is another girl group from this era, and at the same level as En Vogue both talent wise and level of success. Check out "Waterfalls" (The song spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1995)

En Vogue does not get enough love, they had an amazing sound and a point to make. This song needs more play because it is just as relevant today as it was in 92 when they released it. Every single one of us, male, female or anyone else has been judged by the way we were born or personal style/life choices we have made. If we could all just take the time to free our minds and learn how to see people for what they are inside vs what they look like, the rest will indeed follow.

First of all, that first line in the song... I wrote a song about it, wanna hear it, here it go. That comes from the television show (In living color). Second, the phrase (Free your mind and your ass will follow) comes from a George Clinton and Funkadelic song.

Yes! This song has anthem status on my playlist. I grew up through high school and beyond singing "Free your mind!!..." For any situation that may have required the reminder. Thanks for the video and good luck getting that hook out of your head, lol. 'Free your mind, and the rest will follow. Be color blind, don't be so shallow!' Have a great weekend!

Yayess! OMG! I love this song! As a white woman, I hope someday this song could be played in a mixed group, and this would become the anthem that all would sing!!! This song came out when I was young woman and blew me away. It's so wonderful watching you all enjoy it for the first time now in 2024! I had to replay three times. After the first time through, I knew I was going to watch J's reaction and Ambers separately!!! You can't hide spontaneous joy, and y'all's reaction proves that! Boomer!
