Notches are going to be next big issue with properties, once a couple of sparks and plumbers have been through joist are starting to look like Swiss cheese. Being able to see other holes and notches on re wires / replumbs is often impossible. How many people honestly say yep I have done the calculations it is fine

AFDDs on inverters is an interesting thing. I've heard a few tales from working sparkies of trips happening with inverters that are operating standalone, ie mains failed or not present at all. Some inverters react to brief overload situations by mangling the AC waveform either as a result of running out of steam and not being able to maintain regulation or as a method to limit current. The AFDD saw the mangled waveform as being an arc fault and tripped.

Why would you put an afdd on a battery inverter? Seems an odd choice.

Its good to hear that another supermarket (Sainsbury’s) is rolling out EVSE with their own charging network. The store near me (Watford) has been fitting them for the last 3 weeks. However and this is a BIG HOWEVER not seen anyone from the National Grid or PowerNetwork UK doing any upgrades in my area so I think there may be fun when the chargers can't get enough power or the 50 to 60 year old cable under the tarmac starts to burn out or develop faults. Stay tuned for PEN fault updates in my local area.

You'd expect a new transformer on site with that number of kW being tossed around really, wouldn't you. Unlikely anything existing on site would have the on-demand capacity available let alone the surrounding LV network.

Most supermarkets have massive supplies already due to old lighting and cooling, now they have plenty of spare capacity so no need to upgrade the grid :)
@retrozmachine1189
@retrozmachine1189 4 ай бұрын
@@jameshughesdon5370 Places like this tended to have fluro lighting in the past, replace that with LEDs today. Yes, LED is lower wattage but not that much different to gain even 10kW (at a guess). Similarly efficiency gains in cooling aren't big enough. If they put in a 5 charger arrangement thats 5 x 150kW (actual power ratings are higher as per this week's news), or 750kW. If you think there are any efficiency movements in lighting and cooling that will free that sort of capacity you are dreaming. FYI, 750kVA equates to the supply for an entire suburban supermarket + smattering of smaller shops that is just down the road from me.
@jameshughesdon5370
@jameshughesdon5370 4 ай бұрын
@retrozmachine1189 I'm getting my figures from working in thousands of supermarkets across the UK they have plenty spare, why install 150 + chargers when a 50KW will do a 40min charge, and that's the normal time it takes my wife to go round ....
@retrozmachine1189
@retrozmachine1189 4 ай бұрын
@@jameshughesdon5370 Yet 150kW+ capable is what they are doing so that's the sort of power requirements. Do your suburban supermarkets really have 500+kW of capacity just sitting around, ie ability of the transformer etc is up around 1.5 to 2MVA? That sounds rather bizarre to me with how much more the transformer and other infrastructure would cost.

I still find public rapid EV chargers cost prohibitive. They're always 80p+ per kW compared to under 30p for home energy, yes that's at 7kW speed but my car can charge while I sleep. I feel for anyone unable to recharge at home.
@DevAnubis

Good to see another network using Kempower chargers, they're modular and all the power-electronics are on the back-end in cabinets with (relatively)simple front-ends by the car bays. It'll be interesting though to see how well Sainsburys are able to maintain their DC charging network though. Even players like AppleGreen struggle to keep their hardware working across all locations, where as the big dedicated DC charging networks have a much better track record of keeping on top of their operations (GridServe, InstaVolt, Osprey).

been saying it for years. Supermarkets have massive supplys 1000 - 2000 amp supplies due to historic lighting and cooling. most now only pull around 500, so plenty of spare capacity :)

What boggles my mind is , no one is upgrading any electrical infrastructure.they think power falls out the air. The cables in the ground are 50+ years old, all with pme faults on and now want to add ev chargers to every block. Get your inverters installed lads. Power cuts are around the corner.

Most of us tend to use showers for only a few minutes (my cousin is the exception - 30 mins has been known!😡), an electric car could be drawing 11KW for several hours.

@@r.h.8754 The main fuses in most residential properties are 100 amps (sometimes 60 amps). I don't know if the electricity companies have applied a diversity factor and are unable to supply 100 amps concurrently to all houses, but 11KW is only 47 amps which is less than half of the maximum available to a property.

@mikebarry229
@mikebarry229 4 ай бұрын
@@geraldelwood9660 I think the thought process is that joists are large for a reason and a deep joist over 250mm deep is fairly rare in domestic condstruction and implies large loads or long spans (and were likely designed by an engineer in the first place, rather than just plucked from a table). That doesn't mean they cannot be notched (though a hole drilled through the centreline is far far preferable, notches should always be a last resort), but get advice if you do.

the fact the he was allowed to get to that sum of money is what's wrong with industry at this point ... that not only makes a bad image for good electricians but the money lost could have actually gone to pay decent electricians and make paying customers happy. now customers are shorted on money and decent electricians lost a lot of potential work/income ...
